White House struggles to explain Trump’s Texas border wall boast

Kevin Diaz Jan. 3, 2019

www.houstonchronicle.com/news/politics/texas/article/White-House-strug
gles-to-explain-Trump-s-Texas-13506314.php

“Yesterday I gave out 115 miles’ worth of wall, 115 miles in Texas,” Trump said on Christmas Day. “It’s going to be built, hopefully rapidly. I’m going there at the end of January for the start of construction.”

Contracts: 18 miles of wall in Texas so far in Trump administration

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) contract announcements since Trump’s inauguration list four border wall projects in Texas covering a total of 18 miles. Four of those miles involve replacing existing fencing in El Paso.

That includes 14 miles of new levee wall construction in the Rio Grande Valley near McAllen, plus the four miles of steel bollard wall construction in El Paso to replace existing chain link fencing.

CBP officials, who are responsible for awarding border wall contracts along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, also recently announced awards to construct a series of new border wall gates in the Rio Grande Valley using money appropriated by Congress in 2017.

Border officials have long identified the Rio Grande Valley as a hotbed of illegal border crossing from Mexico. The levee wall projects there, slated to begin in February, were approved by Congress in March as part of a spending bill that provided nearly $1.6 billion for border security, including 33 miles of new levee and pedestrian fencing in the Rio Grande Valley.

No other publicly available contracts or budget documents point to the 115 miles of Texas border wall Trump said he had “just” approved on December 24. Combined with the 65 miles of new or improved barriers that could be authorized in the pending Senate spending bill for 2019, the administration eventually could lay claim to about 97 miles of upgraded border security in Texas, but that is still short of Trump’s claim to contracts in hand for 115 miles.

While some supporters have suggested that his tweet could have anticipated Texas border wall projects funded from his pending $5 billion request to Congress, Trump has doubled down on his contract claim and vowed to follow up with a trip to Texas later this month.

There's too much there wish. What we know is only the tip of the ice berg. I feel Mueller's report may rock this country to it's core. I'll also go out on a limb here and say the republicans will vote for a veto proof bill opening up the government. And that folks ends Trumps influence.

Republican Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado and Susan Collins of Maine are up for reelection in 2020 in states Trump lost. Both broke ranks saying it is time to end the stalemate even without wall funding.

Trump has steadily painted himself into a corner on the issue after turning down an offer early in 2018 of $25 billion in border security funding.

Trump threw away his best chance to get funding for a border wall by effectively killing a bipartisan bill on February 14, 2018. A group of 16 senators, including Republicans Susan Collins from Maine and Virginia Democrat Tim Kaine, unveiled a new bill that assigned $25 billion in funding for border security, including physical barriers and fencing, as well as a path to citizenship for the Dreamers, immigrants brought to the US as children without documentation.

The deal was a compromise between Republicans and Democrats that could have broken the deadlock over the issue in Congress. It would “represent the most significant change to immigration law in the past thirty-five years,” said South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham, one of the bill’s sponsors.

Late that evening, however, the Department of Homeland Security put out an unusually political, aggressively worded, and often misleading statement that ripped into the plan, calling it a “mass amnesty for over 10 million illegal aliens, including criminals.”

Graham criticized the DHS for acting like a political entity, not a government agency, “Who the hell wrote this,” he said, calling the statement “poisonous.” Then Trump tweeted his support for the DHS rather than for the Senate’s compromise.

After the DHS statement dropped, Republicans and Democrats in pro-Trump states peeled away, apparently afraid that voting for a bill the president opposed would hurt them in the 2018 midterms. It failed to get the 60 Senate votes it needed in a Feb. 15 vote, winning just 54; a hardline Trump-backed alternative was even less popular, with just 39.

But, hopefully for me, there's a small % that Chuck and Nancy will *this time* let him hang himself and the GOP. There are 2 main stories right now in the MSM: the shiny new Dems in Congress and the Lunatic in Chief. The market is wobbling, so he can't cling to that. How much longer will Reps risk their jobs with an unindicted Co-Conspirator to a felony? I believe almost every Rep knows he's guilty as sh*t and it's just a matter of time before they haul his @ss away - do they want to be connected to him then? Timing is critical.

The IRS is not issuing refunds. That will pinch Trump voters. If they realize that those refunds could be fixed with a stroke of Trump's pen, but he won't pick up the pen, there will be trouble for Trump.

On the other hand, Democrats are being hectored to give Trump's 2020 Campaign a gift of $5 billion. Stroke of the pen versus $5 billion gift. I think the Democratic leadership understand that Trump will get something billions of times more valuable than what Trump will give in return, so the leadership won't give it to him or else they will look like they capitulated to a bully in exchange for nothing valuable.

IRS won't issue refunds during shutdown.

If the shutdown continues into the tax filing season, the IRS could recall additional staff, according to a union official. The agency still won't issue refunds, however. The IRS issued 102 million tax refunds last year with a total value of $285 billion, according to eFile, a tax software site.

Senior Trump administration officials met Democratic congressional staffers, but failed to break a deadlock over a proposed border wall and end a two-week-old partial US government shutdown.

Obviously...

I'd like to add that if Trump is asking for $5 Billion for starters, then should get $6.2 Billion since there were already $1.2 Billion secured back in 2006 that has stagnated for 12 years.

Trump’s Wall was a gimmick that campaign aides came up with so he’d remember to talk immigration.

Trump didn’t always think a border wall with Mexico was an essential idea. In fact, it started out as a gimmick, a mnemonic device of sorts. During the time when Trump was weighing his presidential candidacy, aides wanted to come up with a way to help him remember to talk about getting tough on immigration, which was always seen as a key issue in his campaign.

Political advisers Sam Nunberg and Roger Stone came up with the idea. “How do we get him to continue to talk about immigration?” Nunberg claims he told Stone. “We’re going to get him to talk about he’s going to build a wall.” The plan worked like a charm. Trump talked about immigration in his speeches, and the wall narrative got huge reactions from the crowd, which obviously thrilled Trump. So he kept pushing the idea harder and harder.

The laser focus on the wall makes immigration hardliners nervous because most don’t actually see it as the most important priority. They worry that he’ll be willing to trade away things that are far more important in order to get his wall. “I’ve always thought it created a danger that he would trade almost anything in order to get the wall,” said Mark Krikorian, the executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies. “I’m still worried about that now.”

Michael D’Antonio, a Trump biographer, says the wall is naturally appealing to Trump because of his background in real estate and the idea that he’d leave behind a legacy. “I think he’d like it being called the Great Wall of Trump,” D’Antonio said, noting he’d probably like it even more if there was a plaque honoring the president who built it “every mile or so.”

To many conservative activists who have pressed for decades for sharp reductions in legal and illegal immigration — and some of the Republican lawmakers who are allied with them — a physical barrier on the border with Mexico is barely relevant, little more than a footnote to a long list of policy changes they believe are needed to fix a broken system.

The disconnect is at the heart of the dilemma facing Mr. Trump as he labors to find a way out of an impasse that has shuttered large parts of the government and cost 800,000 federal employees their pay. Having spent more than four years — first as a candidate and then as president — whipping his core supporters into a frenzy over the idea of building a border wall, Mr. Trump finds himself in a political box of his own making.

In transforming the wall into a powerful emblem of his anti-immigration message, Mr. Trump has made the proposal politically untouchable for Democrats, who have steadfastly refused to fund it, complicating the chances of any compromise.

“As a messaging strategy, it was pretty successful,” Mr. Krikorian said. “The problem is, you got elected; now what do you do? Having made it his signature issue, Trump handed the Democrats a weapon against him.”

Hard to digest: Inmates eat holiday steak during shutdown while prison workers go unpaid

June Bencebi worked on Christmas and New Year's Day when inmates chowed down on Cornish hen and roast beef, with macaroni and cheese, and Boston Creme pie and other treats for dessert.

"A lot of the staff were upset over the fact that we don't know where our next meal is going to come, and these inmates were served so much food they were able to get on the serving line twice," said Bencebi.

The shutdown marks the latest hardship for a group of roughly 36,000 federal employees who have been complaining about staff shortages and dangerous work conditions for months.

In addition to working without pay, many of the prison staffers, including correctional officers, were ordered to cut vacations short or face a loss in wages and possible administrative punishment, including suspensions.

Adding to the staffers' bitter feelings, the working inmates were still drawing government paychecks for their prison jobs, which include painting buildings, cooking meals and mowing lawns.

Nope, fact is more drugs by far enter this country through legal ports of entry. More people who stay here illegally do the same. So if you wish to stem the flow of drugs and whatever, we need to invest more money there comrade.

Signym, pretty darn vague assertions you are making, but Trump has done the same about 1) drugs and 2) trafficking:

1) www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/08/31/fact-check-president-t
rump-border-wall-drug-smuggling/619865001
/

President Trump says that his proposed wall along the Mexico border “will stop much of the drugs from pouring into this country.” We cannot predict the future, but the fact is that most illicit drugs pass undetected through legal ports of entry.

Mexican cartels “transport the bulk of their drugs over the Southwest Border through ports of entry (POEs) using passenger vehicles or tractor trailers,” the Drug Enforcement Administration said in a 2015 report. “The drugs are typically secreted in hidden compartments when transported in passenger vehicles or comingled with legitimate goods when transported in tractor trailers.”

2)Human trafficking goes on inside the USA far more than right at the border. If Trump would remove those 22 million illegal aliens living inside the USA for decades, trafficking wouldn't exist. But Trump is NOT doing it and he has all the authority he needs without any new authorization from Congress.

www.cbp.gov/border-security/human-trafficking
Human trafficking entangles victims in a nearly impenetrable web, for a number of reasons:

The victim may not realize that he or she is imprisoned, because coercion is psychological (it may not be physical)

Victims are typically impoverished and financially dependent on their captors

Often the crime takes place in plain view-e.g. in a restaurant, worksite, or private home-and is not immediately apparent to observers

Victims can be exploited for labor, sex, or both, particularly in private homes.

Signs of Human Trafficking

It is sometimes said that human trafficking is an "invisible crime," because its signs are not always obvious to the untrained eye. However, there are some indicators that may serve as a tip-off, particularly when they appear in combination. Suspect that something is amiss if an individual:

Lacks identification documents or travel documents

Lives and works in the same place

Lacks freedom of movement

Seems to be restricted from socializing, attending religious services or contacting family

Seems to have been deprived of basic life necessities, such as food, water, sleep or medical care

Shows signs of having been abused or physically assaulted. Such signs range from the more obvious, such as broken bones, to the more subtle, such as branding or tattooing

Seems submissive or fearful in the presence of others

Seems not to control his or her schedule

Seems to lack concrete short- or long-term plans

Seems to lack knowledge about the place where he or she lives

Appears to date much older, abusive or controlling men.

Pelosi cranks up shutdown pressure on Trump, GOP

Democrats this week will repackage a handful of uncontroversial bills funding a number of shuttered agencies — excluding Homeland Security, which covers the proposed wall — and send them off to the Senate one by one, forcing GOP leaders to explain their promised inaction on measures they supported just weeks ago.

Mitch McConnell will not bring bills forward to be voted upon in the Senate unless Trump indicates beforehand he will sign them. That is exactly backwards from the way Congress is designed to work in the Constitution. Does Trump know? Does McConnell care? No and no.

The airwaves and print are being flooded with the facts faster than Trump and you trolls can lie.

Meanwhile, intelligent Americans realize we're wasting valuable time and resources because the dumbest, most uniformed president in recorded history has a hissy fit, while Republican cowards hide in a dark corner.

Michael Lewis book The Fifth Risk talks about even greater concerns besides the usual (embarrassing the country every day on every stage with compulsive lies and stupidity), when someone so completely uniformed is given so much power without any check or balance.

"What are the consequences if the people given control over our government have no idea how it works?

"The election happened," remembers Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, then deputy secretary of the Department of Energy. "And then there was radio silence." Across all departments, similar stories were playing out: Trump appointees were few and far between; those that did show up were shockingly uninformed about the functions of their new workplace. Some even threw away the briefing books that had been prepared for them.

Michael Lewis’s brilliant narrative takes us into the engine rooms of a government under attack by its own leaders. In Agriculture the funding of vital programs like food stamps and school lunches is being slashed. The Commerce Department may not have enough staff to conduct the 2020 Census properly. Over at Energy, where international nuclear risk is managed, it’s not clear there will be enough inspectors to track and locate black market uranium before terrorists do.

Willful ignorance plays a role in these looming disasters. If your ambition is to maximize short-term gains without regard to the long-term cost, you are better off not knowing those costs. If you want to preserve your personal immunity to the hard problems, it’s better never to really understand those problems. There is upside to ignorance, and downside to knowledge. Knowledge makes life messier. It makes it a bit more difficult for a person who wishes to shrink the world to a worldview.

If there are dangerous fools in this book, there are also heroes, unsung, of course. They are the linchpins of the system—those public servants whose knowledge, dedication, and proactivity keep the machinery running. Michael Lewis finds them, and he asks them what keeps them up at night."

Did you know the Dept of Energy was responsible for making sure loose nukes and nuke material was found throughout the globe and retrieved so there aren't any dirty bombs showing up in the US? Neither did Rick Perry, Trump's appointed Secretary of Energy, the same Rick Perry who said he would get rid of the department during a GOP debate. Or he would have if he could have remembered the name The wealth of willful ignorance and negligence practiced by Trump and his transition team would be shocking if we didn't already come to expect it.

That's the point second. It makes the republicans look like they shut the government down for political reasons and they get stuck trying to explain it.

If I find any Texas Republicans that notice Trump lies tonight on TV I will let you know. I don't think they will notice for years. Texas Republicans didn't notice that Bush and Cheney lied their way into a war with Iraq. Texans only lost faith in Bush/Cheney after years of obvious failure and $ trillions in unnecessary expense. But not a majority of them are convinced, even to this day. They still think a Republican President a little more competent than Bush/Cheney could have won the War. Those Republican voters never understood the message that Iraq did not have the nukes Bush said were there, the WMDs that were the justification for the Iraq War in the first place.

Trump is right, and the Dems know it.

They voted for the wall, border security, many times over. But little was actually done, because of politics and the D.C. swamp mentality.

I agree that there should be a Texas/Mexico Wall, but Texas Republicans stood in the way. Texas’ Congressmen didn’t want land taken for the Texas/Mexico Wall and sure didn’t want to pay the price.

Now the Texas GOP has gotten even more miserly: they want the Democrats to pay all the costs. The Republicans, and especially Trump, keep insisting they need a Wall and the Democrats have to give it to them as a free gift as part of Trump’s 2020 campaign. Trump must be deliberately going about this in the stupidest way possible to force Democrats to resist.

Trump is also talking about declaring an emergency and then using it to steal the money for his Wall from the Pentagon. That is another move guaranteed to piss off the Democrats in Congress and ensure none of them will vote for Trump’s Wall.

Trump only has to appeal to 7 Democratic Senators and around 40 Democrats in the House. He needs to start offering the Democrats something for their votes. If Trump won’t do that, get 47 Democrats on his side, he is not getting a Wall for free.

Trump could get votes for his Wall from Houston Democrats in the House by offering to pay for the Ike Dike, a multi-billion dollar project to protect Houston from hurricanes. There are other deals Trump could do to get his votes for his Wall from the Democrats in other states. Instead of a crappy $5.7 billion Wall, he could be building his big, beautiful $30 billion wall, but he has to make a deal rather than throw a childish tantrum lasting for months. Trump makes Democratic parents want to beat their whinny children and Trump with a belt.

I gave you the example of the multi-billion dollar Ike Dike paid for by the Federal Government. It has not been built because the Republicans that control the state government in Austin Texas don't want to pay for it. The Ike Dike would protect Houston, where the population is shifting toward Democrats and has several, but not all, Democratic Party Representatives in Congress. That is how you get 47 Democrats in Congress to vote for Trump's Wall. Trump has to offer the Texas Democrats something in exchange for Texas Democratic Congressmen voting for Trump's Wall. If Trump won't do that, it means Trump wants his Wall for free, simply because he says he must have the Wall. I doubt you understand. Leo Tolstoy, in 1897, explained why Trump voters won't understand what I tried to say as plainly as possible: "The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him."
