I normally us it.

It recently got bought by Verizon, it seems. A few months ago it was acquired by some other outfit, likely just a holding company - but now it got sucking up by Verizon.

So now I just spent about 5 minutes to do about 3 seconds worth of work. They must have gobs of advertizing jammed in there now. And it also seems to jam up every other tab in the browser that I have open.

No, I don't use yahoo or Verizon.

But I had Verizon when it was in the landline/FIOS business - before they sold the whole landline shebang to Frontier in order to concentrate on their wireless ventures - and they SUCKED !!!! I'm sorry you got involuntarily transferred to them.

(A similar thing has happened to me with banks. I'll find a nice, local, well-run bank JUST TO AVOID BofA, and within a couple of years BofA buys it out. BofA has been chasing me from bank to bank for many decades now. So I know how frustrating this kind of thing can be. You do business with a particular entity because you like them - and then they get snuffed out of existence and resurrected into something you really don't care for.)

(As for Frontier, they got sold a crappy system, with outages, bad signal, hideous infrastructure, cheap equipment ... I THINK they were trying to run a legitimate business, but the setup they bought torpedoed them, and their ratings are now just as bad as Verizon's/FIOS ever were. There are just too many equipment problems for them to chase after.)

Strange...

I literally could not find any info regarding this acquisition with a Google search. I had to go to dogpile.com to find an article regarding the buyout.

"Oath", doesn't seem to be a holding company. It seems to be a subsidiary of Verizon that is in charge of the Yahoo, AOL, and HuffPo brands, among other things.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

We used dslextreme.com on Verizon equipment, but Verizon was always "gating" us and then blaming dslextreme.com. The reality is that the Verizon hardware sucks bananas. We went to the dark side, TWC which became Spectrum, for our inet access and use Firefox browser with a metric-ton of privacy, anti-ad, and anti-script applications. The one that seems to work best at blocking all that crap is NoScript (allows you to allow, temprarily allow, or block each script individually. I have FB, googletagmanager and google analytics permanently blocked).

I just tried to search on - verizon buys yahoo - with Gibiru and DuckDuckGo and they were loaded with results. Google was about 50/50 - about half the results were google considering, google regretting, google almost completing, and so on.

I don't think Google is a reliable search engine, though if you're looking for something very specific, it might have a larger data set to search through.

This is from an article I read a few days ago about google's autocomplete v other search engines.

The initial phrase is "Hillary Clinton is"

Here are comparisons for "crooked".

When I personally tried - Hillary Clinton is - on google, I got only one autocomplete choice "worth how much"

On DuckDuckGo I got "a crook", " ", "(is)sues", "a criminal", "an idiot", "(Is)rael", "a liar", "sick".

Gibiru doesn't autocomplete.

So, google may be screwing with the algorithm. OR, people know they're being tracked on google, and so save their more sensitive searches for other engines. That's what I can think of off the top of my head.

I'm really good at using Google's search features. Quite a bit better than most are since I know a lot of tricks, like the "site:" one that I've posted about here that has been invaluable to me over the years.

It shouldn't have been necessary here though. I simply typed in "when did Verizon buy out Yahoo" without the quotes. There should have been so many stories on that that they were hitting me in the face with the results. There weren't any. Just a reference or two to Oath quite a bit down the first or second page, which I did remember was the name of the company that popped up a disclaimer you needed to agree to if you were going to continue using an email account with them years ago.

I had no issues finding that story I linked with the same search on dogpile.com, very high up on the first page of results.

I found that strange, and that's why I mentioned it. It's obvious that Google is doing what it can in it's limited *laugh* control over the situation to bury the story. I'm just wondering why.

I don't think it was because Google regrets not buying yahoo, if they were considering it in the past. From what I read, Yahoo, AOL and HuffPo have been a huge albatross around Verizon's neck since they made the purchases and they have been hemorrhaging money on them ever since.

Oh yeah... That autofill is hella-creepy. Especially knowing that they manipulate what the results are.

I think it was a Dane Cook comedy show I saw years ago where he was bitching about it and how he got in trouble with his girlfriend. She was typing a search into Google for apples on his laptop, and immediately after she typed in "A" it auto-filled "asian anal porn".

Come on, Google. At least wait until the second letter is typed in before you go jumping to conclusions.

Hey Jack

Here's a totally non-urgent thing to think about doing. How about some of us type in the exact same words into a google search at more or less the same time, and post our links.

I like the idea. It would have to be coordinated. I just kind of come and go as I please.

It could be interesting... you being in California and me being in fly over country. Never even occured to me that based off of our locations that we might get different results.

Hmmmmm... Do you think we should use a browser for the search that we don't normally use too? It could be that our own personal search histories change what results come up as well. Not sure if you want to have that variable in there or not. Maybe we do both?

Not sure whatever bogus time it's going to say it is when I post this message, but it's 2:23AM by me as I hit "save response".

I'm busy during the day today, but if you let me know what time you're going to be on tonight, I will do my very best to be on at the same time and we can make it happen.

EDIT: Ah. One hour off. I thought it was way worse than that. Although it occurs to me that even though it shows 3:23AM was the time I posted this here on my end, it might show a different time by you and how you have your account set up. Anyway... I'm CST.
