She will need to register as a Sex Offender.

For being topless in her own home.

Why is it tricky?

Government invasion of your own Castle should chill everybody's spine.

Normally I'd say you're right, but drunk feminist mom pulled her tits out in front of the step kids, and obviously somebody in the house complained.

It's not like the cops were hanging outside of her window.

It's a tricky one.

Normally I'd say that this kind of 'outrage' reporting almost never gives you the whole story. But the article seemed reasonably complete. Apparently the state law in Utah is pretty clear, but it's ... well ... Utah, so those laws can be out of line with most other states. I'd say the law needs to go. It's not like the woman took off her shirt for no reason, or she did it deliberately in front of the kids (they walked in after the fact), or made lewd comments, or gestures, or ran around in public flapping her tits at passersby ... or ... anything.

She's the step mom. It was the mom (who isn't reported to be living there or to have been in the home at the time) who made the complaint after the fact. I'd say there was some interpersonal stuff going on between the mom and step mom. And lookee here! A handy state law!

BTW, I think Utah should write state laws to protect children of both sexes from sexual exploitation, without making simple nudity in your own home a crime.

I dunno. Would you be cool with your kids walking in on step mom's naked tits while they were both drunk and shirtless doing rehab work in the house? It's not as if they were having private time in their bedroom with the door locked, and she is part of the movement to just let tits be bare all over the place.

I never had kids of my own, but I know for sure this would have ended up just one in another very, very long string of unfortunate things that happened in mine and my brother's childhoods growing up, and my mom (as terrible as she was at that job) probably would have been awarded full custody over it, in Illinois, not Utah. She beat the hell out of my dad for decades over things far more trivial than this.

Stuff like this screws kids up in the brain, particularly in a culture where tits aren't shown all over billboards and bus stops and network TV. Maybe it's different in the UK where that's not an issue.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

That 'drunk' description was according to the step-mom - who wasn't there, as best I can tell - so I take it with a grain of salt.
Quote:

... doing rehab work in the house?
Pretty much. Though I would say that out of respect for the kids discomfort, if they were feeling any, I would have put something on if I got walked in-on, or hoped that the step-parents would have put something on if they got walked in on. (BTW, having done drywall work myself, I can tell you it's EXTREMELY dusty, especially when you tape/ mud/ sand/ mud ... repeat! I can see saving a lot of clothes washing that way. And as a tip for your own house repairs, the joint compound is both extremely fine and extremely abrasive when you sand it dry, whether you get it in your eyes, your armpits, or your vacuum cleaner! It will work its way through the bag/ dust catcher and grind in the motor.)

But I think going sans is probably something one should be free to do in one's own home - don't you think? And she wasn't arguing about going topless outside, she was talking about in her own home.

Not getting the equivalent here ... if you DAD went shirtless? And I'm not trying to be obtuse, I just don't get your point.

I think it depends on how you're raised. Some people are taught - in here, we can do this, out there, we must do that. In some ways, kids are smarter than people give them credit for.
That said, I do think that some people have more of a natural need for personal privacy, and for 'alone' space. I don't think one should impose personal standards on others if it makes them uncomfortable.

I'd say the couple in Utah should be within their rights to go topless, or even completely naked, in their own home, if that's what they want. But if it weirded the kids out (and there's nothing in the story either way) the 'grups' should have been more considerate, and less dogmatic.

The fuckin' kid isn't going to tell anybody if it made him feel uncomfortable. He's probably mortified it's become a news story now and jesus christ if the school kids know about this they're going to never hear the end of this. It's 50/50 that went into his spank bank for the rest of his life if she's at all attractive (see: the rise if incest porn... it's a lot bigger than you think). His mom also obviously exerts a lot of control over him if he ran to her and told her about it. It's probably also 50/50 that she's going to make such a huge freaking deal about this while he's in the middle of his sexual development that he's going to end up having some weird sexual hangups in adulthood from this whole thing too.

I've done a LOT of drywall and mudding in my life, a bit of it in my own house while alone, and I've never even considered doing it without a shirt on. I wouldn't do any work where stuff is falling on me with my clothes off. That's what "work clothes" are for.

I'm thinking that attitudes about this must be much different in California than they are in fly over country. I can't imagine many women I've ever known being alright with this behavior, let alone any that were older than I am. It must be a regional thing.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

But yanno, I'm not a Californian, so if you're making assumptions based on that, you're mistaken.

In any case, it sounds like you think people should not be allowed to go shirtless (or even naked) in THEIR OWN HOMES.

I think there's nuance in everything.

If you haven't been involved any way in a broken marriage situation where the mother is literally insane, than that truly is awesome for you.

Even if my step-mom was a nudist, the old man would have made her keep her clothes on when we came over because he would have known full well that our mother would have made sure that he never saw us again.

Like I said, this whole situation is tricky.

Cops weren't looking in the window. The only reason the government got involved is because of the mother. We're also talking about Utah, where there might be a very strong religious aspect to the whole situation on top of things.

And yes, personally, I don't think it is at all appropriate for a step mother or a mother to walk around her house nude in front of children. Period.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Here's the thing. And this is an argument I heard many years ago and have not yet found a reason to dismiss it ...

When you have laws on the books that you don't intend to enforce 100% of the time, then you end up with 'selective prosecution', where somebody decides who to go after, and who to let slide, based on ... whatever. You're black, or white; male, or female; foreign, or native. Whatever itch they light on, they have a tool to use against you, and it's this law on the books they really don't care about, but it sure is handy.

So, to my mind, the standard for a law to be on the books should be that you are interested in, capable of, and it makes sense to, enforce it 100% of the time. I don't think the 'topless' law meets that standard.

As for everything else - there were 2 kids who visited, a boy and a girl. There's no indication if they were both uncomfortable, or not, or if it was a split reaction. The only person who complained is the mom. She made statements that may or may not be true ('drunk'). She's the one who brought this all into the public eye and made it a spectacle. So any peer-to-peer repercussions for her kids are on her, not the step-mom.

If there was no law on the books, there literally would be no issue. There would be no theoretical custody lever to use on anybody, no case before the courts, no ... nothing. Assuming the kids were uncomfortable, it would have been a private, momentary, and addressable embarrassment, to be adjudicated between individuals as in - we're uncomfortable and we're not going to visit here unless you promise not to do that while we're here. And that would have been the end of the story.

Again, Kiki, that's why I said it's tricky.

I'm not the arbiter of what behavior is and isn't right. Like I said, in the UK you can see topless advertisements all over billboards. I think if they did that over here in the states overnight without easing that into the social construct of the nation, there would be a lot of traffic accidents the next morning.

I don't like taking that side on this issue either, because the mother clearly was abusing the law for her favor as my own mother did when she wallet raped my dad for decades all while getting the majority of custody when we would have all been much better off as adults had we been with my father, who desperately wanted that but was told by lawyers that the cost in 1980's dollars would be upwards of $50,000 in legal fees with absolutely no guaranty that the money wasn't just thrown away.

The mere fact that this case even exists and I have to think about both sides of this issue is offensive to me.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Well, I knew there were prudes on this board. But I didn't realize that any were still here.

As an avid nudist and visitor to nude beaches, I find this disheartening. You may refer to nudism as naturism, sun-worshipping, or clothing-optional sunbathing.

To watch whole families enjoying nudism, and then to find that some folk consider family nudism values to be unacceptable is disheartening. In America. Land of The Free. With Liberty. With Religious Freedom. But apparently not Freedom from clothing.

Yanno... I read this part again and I can't help but wonder if you're joking about it or not.

If you aren't, you must not have ever had any divorces and the fallout involved because of that in your family. Great for you if that's the case.

Regardless of whatever your feelings are about "family nudism", if all of the sudden when my old man married my step mom who was 20 years younger than him and only 7 years older than me started walking around the house nude all of the time and then got us to join that cult and started getting me and my brothers to go around the house nude as well, my mom would have absolutely destroyed them in court even more than she already did.

Right now? I live alone dude. I have no A/C. The only reason I wear boxers in the house for 3 months out of the year when I don't need more for protection when doing work on the house is so that my ball sweat and dingleberry juice doesn't get all over my couch.

Nobody is going to tell me I can't be naked in my own house.

But you put other people in the mix... especially a very jealous ex-wife? You've got to be kidding that individual rights to freedom and privacy mean anything at that point.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

Federal Laws prohibit weed in practically every location in America.

No Federal Laws prohibit nudism, naturism, or sun-worshipping. And they are practiced, in public locatins, in practically every State in the nation. Apparently not Utah, nor your house.
Exhibitionism is a different matter.

Yup. Unconstitutional federal laws. BTW... our boy Trump doesn't recognize them and neither do the states. I could go into a pot shop in Illinois right now and smoke it on the street with an ounce in my pocket in front of a cop and he can't do a goddamned thing about it.
