COVID-19 is like pasta.

Asians invented it, Italians spread it.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

That's the problem - opportunists. People who buy whole truckloads to sell later.

But you'd probably call them enterprising small businesses.

Opportunists are definitely a problem, but it's more than that.

Nobody is buying truckloads of milk to sell out of their cars and garages before it goes bad, and you can't buy that either. At least around here.

Living close to Gary, I'm pretty sure that there are quite a few families that loaded their fridges with milk and spent down all their food stamps buying a whole bunch of perishable goods there's no way they're going to be able to finish before it goes bad.

Can't say I blame them. They're getting hit from both sides of the panic. Not only are they worried about supplies drying up, but also wondering if their benefits are going to be messed with too.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

The problem is, once people start grabbing more than they need for whatever reason, you HAVE to start grabbing things yourself. Because it may not be there in any quantity later on when you do need it. It's a rational response to an irrational situation.

It's like our society that runs on greed. It has to spread till only the greediest survive.

Yeah... but the panic is going to subside. A few weeks will go by and people will realize that there's no there there and things will more or less go back to normal.

I think the unfortunate thing here is that all of this is eventually going to go down the memory hole and once the perishables they bought in bulk go bad and get thrown out, they'll live off the non-perishable stuff without replenishing any of it over time and when something like this happens again they're just going to repeat this idiocy.

I'd love to think that there are some lessons that will be learned here, but I think for most people that once things go back to normal they won't have learned a thing.

From one who knows, it's a lot easier to sit back and laugh at other people when you are at least somewhat prepared for these eventualities. There's no need to have 20 years of stuff in a bunker because we're all up shits creek if you ever need that, but you should always have at least a month or two of food, soap, paper towels and just the bare necessities in case anything like this ever happens.

Kind of annoyed about the milk right now though, truth be told.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

So, for the record, whenever you spout an argument that's based on nothing more than your own highly biased and uninformed opinion, I'll just reply lol.

Cool. And when I'm right, I won't hesitate to say that I told you so.

Looking forward to doing a lot of that when Trump gets re-elected, but in the mean time this will be a lot quicker and should tide me over.
