Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

I first ran across reading about this little critter many decades ago in one of my professional publications - it was a case study where, as is usual for this amoeba - it was correctly diagnosed but too late, and the young girl died after a few days. Though why anyone would want to survive with chunks of their brain eaten away is beyond me.
My next encounter was the TV show 'House'.
Since then I've read about more and more cases in the news of (usually) children dying from it after jumping into and swimming in warm stagnant water like rural watering holes or Florida canals. The theory is that water containing the amoeba gets forced up the nose, where it eats its way along the olfactory nerves into the brain. It's weird enough that it's attention getting and makes the news.
This is the first time I've read about it as a mass public health threat.

Sorry to tell you, but I live in Baytown, which gets its water from Lake Houston. That amoeba story is about water from the Brazos River, which does not flow into Lake Houston, but rather into the Gulf of Mexico. By the way, the area where the amoeba strikes is overburdened with Trump loving Republicans. Maybe their brains are being eaten because they aren't willing to pay for a first-class water treatment system?
