You think people might learn something after that ship got stuck sideways in the Suez Canal

In California a lot of ships are parked off shore waiting

Supply and Consume...move product. All a big long complex link

In England the shortages come in major cities, some on the phone or sending begging letters urging them to help drive fuel trucks amid a gasoline petrol crisis, there is a tunnel between France and England but little shipped and no trucking. Some say Brexit ISN’T to blame for fuel crisis – but confusingly say the French are doing things, the political claims leaving EU caused trucker shortage?

Not sure I understand. The backlog is a couple dozen ships? SD has helped with 4-5 in the past 3 months?
Just how much is the backlog? How long does it take to unload a ship? Is the bscklog for Long Beach, or just LA?
What are the same answers for UK?

Copied from another thread, this answered some of my questions above:

Quote:

It seems the energy "supply chain" is effed up just about everywhere... here, the UK, the EU, northern China ... all for different reasons.

In the EU, it's because they refused to let Nordstream2 online, and - of course- didn't sign any long-term contracts with Russia, so now that they're facing a cold winter the spot-market supplies are very tight. Also, wind and solar are not, as it turns out, reliably reliable.

In the UK, apparently the lorry (truck) drivers delivering gasoline to the petrol (gas) stations are half non-citizens of the UK (mostly underpaid Poles and Romanians) so after Brexit they no longer have visas to work in the UK. so ... phfffft! There they went! Also, Britain had a year where the wind didn't blow, so they used up their natgas surplus to power electricity generation, and now the cupboard is bare and the spot market is... well... tight.

*There was an interesting discussion on The Duran about tapping and storing gas reserves. Gas in not like oil and coal: You can't store it very easily and "save it for later". Being a gas, it takes up huge volumes to store, which requires geological-sized formations to keep it in. Here in SoCal, SoCal gas used to store gas in depleted oilfields buying in in the summer and when it's cheap, pumping it underground and hen withdawing it in the winter. Until they had a major blowout near Porter Ranch, which was the simple result of them NOT having blowout protectors on any of their 100-odd onsite wells. Worst gas leak in USA history: think Deepwater Horizon excpet on land, with natgas.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/utility-paying-up-to-2418b-in-settle
ment-for-worst-methane-gas-leak-in-us-history/ar-AAOV2m3

I don't know what's going on with northern China. They have plenty of coal, but it's brown coal. I guess their problem is they sanctioned coal imports from Australia and now they have to scramble for supplies.

I think the problem in the USA is that hedging has polled the price of gas up, making utitilies reluctant to buy.

In the Mideast, war and sanctions are calling the shots.

So, panic buying is the order of the day, mostly due to policy failures and (in some cases) technical failures. It's predicted to subside in the next month or two.

A first for me...

Amazon delivery scheduled for yesterday by 10PM never showed up. I wasn't expecting it to have since the tracking page never showed it was even shipped, let alone on its way.

After 10PM it switched to apologizing that the delivery hasn't been made and that I will be charged when the item has been shipped. It still says that this morning, although the expected delivery date still shows as yesterday.

It's happening.

Legacy Media isn't going to be able to keep lying about this. The Covid mandates are going to make Afghanistan look like nothing in comparison.

An operation can only move at the rate of it's slowest step (rate limiting step).

The bottleneck is at unloading. Crane operator shortage is the cause. Truckers wait in line for HOURS to pick up their cargo. There's no shortage of them!

So apparently it's a combination of surge in demand (stimulus checks) meeting a choke point.

Once the cranes are working 24/7 we will see whether there's a real shortage of truckers and warehouse people.

Then after that, retail workers.

I think people in the USA are tired of being flogged for measely pay. Covid just added another dimension of stress on top of that. So a lot of people are staying home, sitting it out.

That must be what all the illegals are for.

According to Todd, here's what happens. Ships arrive at the port, carrying goods. The cargo is unloaded and then it awaits pick up from a truck driver. That driver then has to get through traffic, with the chance they may have to make a stop at one of the railways to unload or pick up more cargo. From there, the goods head to a distribution center, and are then sent out.

which I took to be sarcasm. So, yes, your point WAS about VACCINE MANDATES. We can all read what you posted, and you just look stupid denying it.

Quote:

SIX: You said that the issues weren't due to trucker shortages.
I said the issue AT THE DOCKS wasn't due to trucker shortages. Twice. Again, we can all read what I posted, so stop trying to change it. AT THE DOCKS there is a huge line of trucks waiting for their cargo, and they wait - sometimes for HOURS.

THAT has been a common complaint since before Covid. I'm going to dredge up how I know thise because "goods movement" is a matter of air pollution, which I leearned about at work. I heard plenty of truckers testify that they would wait, sometimes for HOURS, engines idling (burning diesel and losing money) for their cargo.

These truckers are often independent operators or they work for small companies. They're treated like shit/"gig economy" and they eat the cost of those "wait times" personally. If the wait times start to exceed the point where they can make money hauling cargo, it starts to make the whole profession look very unattractive. IF they can manage to unsnarl the unloading/loading process and reduce wait times, it may prompt more people back into trucking.

There IS an overall shortage of truckers which existed BEFORE Covid, and I'm sure there are various reasons for that which go back to BEFORE Covid. Covid and the vaccine mandate surely didn't help, but its not the ONLY reason.

It's like al the other shit jobs in the USA: we say they'r essential but we treat them like shit: Low pay, no benefits, no security. Give people a stimulus check and watch them bolt from their jobs.

Lazy crane operators making $250,000 a year exacerbating port crisis, truckers say

by Tori Richards, Investigative Reporter |
October 15, 2021 04:01 PM

LONG BEACH, California — Crane operators who belong to a powerful union and earn up to $250,000 a year transferring containers from ships to trucks are worsening the supply chain crisis that threatens Christmas by goofing off on the job, frustrated truckers told the Washington Examiner.

The finger-pointing at the busy Los Angeles County ports comes as scores of container ships are anchored off the California coast, waiting in some cases for weeks to unload their freight. The Biden administration has scrambled to get shipping executives, port officials, and labor to tackle the problem. While the reasons for the burgeoning backlog are complex, truck drivers say not everyone seems to be working together.

“In 15 years of doing this job, I’ve never seen them work slower,” said Antonio, who has spent hours waiting at Los Angeles County ports for cargo to be loaded. “The crane operators take their time, like three to four hours to get just one container. You can’t say anything to them, or they will just go [help] someone else.”

The Washington Examiner spoke to six truck drivers near the Long Beach/Terminal Island entry route, and each described crane operators as lazy, prone to long lunches, and quick to retaliate against complaints. The allegations were backed up by a labor consultant who has worked on the waterfront for 40 years. None of the truckers interviewed for this story wanted to provide a last name because they fear reprisals at the ports.

Yeah?

Let's see you do what those "lazy" crane operators do.

Then the rest of us get to laugh as you topple over 20 shipping containers and cause tens of millions of damage and further complicate problems for all the down time cleaning up your mess.

I know it's not a glamorous job like yours is. Not everybody gets to spend all day long playing with their pud in Mom's basement.

Houston is a major port, 6ix. I live only a few minutes drive to Bayport just across the Fred Hartman Bridge from Baytown. You are too easily awed by jobs operating heavy machinery. You wouldn't be so impressed if you had seen guys unloading container ships at Barbour's Cut.

Port Crane Operator Careers. Did you know that they make an average of $19.38 an hour? That's $40,312 a year! Between 2018 and 2028, the career is expected to grow 4% and produce 32,600 job opportunities across the U.S.

I'm not easily awed about shit.

I'm just saying your average dumbass (you) isn't somebody you'd want to be operating a crane.

You love shitting all over people who's jobs you think are beneath you, which is funny because you don't provide anything for anybody and you're a piece of shit.

And 40,000 is a lot less than 250,000, so I guess you're full of shit again. Imagine that, huh?

6ix, it is impossible for the operator to flip over a port crane. It is not like cranes at construction sites that can be tipped over. The guys with the skilled job are the truckers, who can crash while driving their loads on the road, and kill a bunch of people.

Most likely it is a secret scheme to make shipping companies rich: According to Freightos - an online freight marketplace https://ship.freightos.com/ - shipping a 40-foot container from China to the West Coast cost $1,318 in October 2019. Now, it costs more than $16,000. That is price gouging.

Price gouging happened with natural gas during a freeze. Restricting the supply causes the price per cubic foot to increase by 100 times, which is a windfall for gas producers. Ship only 75% of normal gas flow but charge 100 times more per cubic foot means you make 75 times more money than normal. A win for people owning gas wells.

Gouge your customers whenever you can. That is how Capitalism works, 6ix. If the Capitalist can blame the weather or blame the crane operators, the customers won't blame the Capitalist, which is exactly what the Capitalist wants, along with more money.

The shipping companies, which are price gouging, know perfectly well that there is no laws stopping them from price gouging. But people who never understood Capitalism, Trump voters being particularly NOT true Capitalists, think it is illegal and the President can stop Capitalism from functioning. He could, but only if he executed a few port crane operators to encourage the others to speed it up. ( More subtly, President could pay port crane operators an extra $100 per box moved, but they have to move at least 100 boxes an hour before they get any money. Move 100 boxes in an hour and get $10,000. Move less and get nothing extra. The operators can be bribed, you know. That is how Capitalism works. And the ships would be emptied of containers damn quick.)

6ix, the shipping companies slowed down the movement of cargo so that they can "justify" charging more than $16,000 for what cost less than $1,318 in October 2019. If you cannot understand that, you can't understand Capitalism. Not understanding excruciatingly simple concepts explains everything about your troubles and that of Trump voters who also have trouble with money, either not enough income or too high expenses.

At the first opportunity, I posted in this thread, wondering about the details of the problem, and what the causes or solutions would be.

Some confusing posts have been made since then.

Sigs posted that the problem is Crane Operators, and there is no shortage of truck drivers at the ports.
Quote:

Originally posted by SIGNYM:
The bottleneck is at unloading. Crane operator shortage is the cause. Truckers wait in line for HOURS to pick up their cargo. There's no shortage of them!

Then there is a news report from South Carolina, about SC. How the ships are unloaded so quickly that the cargo sits for hours waiting for a trucker to come along and pick up the containers:
Quote:

Originally posted by SIGNYM:

Quote:

According to Todd, here's what happens. Ships arrive at the port, carrying goods. The cargo is unloaded and then it awaits pick up from a truck driver.... From there, the goods head to a distribution center, and are then sent out.

.. Todd said wait times, "Can vary from 30 minutes to five hours." He says more needs to be done to recruit new truckers, saying, "This is a dying industry right now, it really it is. There's only a few of us veteran truck drivers out here."

And Sigs digs into the story a bit, and quotes it saying that there is a truck driver shortage.

Other excepts from that story seem confusing:
Quote:

Couple that with a shortage of truckers to get those supplies to you, the system is in chaos, drivers now facing serious pick up delays.

"Often it's a line outside the gate, waiting in line on the interstate," Todd said.

So it sounds like the containers are stacked up, waiting hours for the trucks to come pick it up. But, also, trucks are lined up, waiting to enter the gate, to pick up their loads.
So this means that, at the SC Ports, there is neither a crane operator shortage nor a Truck driver shortage. Both ends of the operation are waiting for the middle to get moving. This indicates that the facility is unable to handle the volume of cargo, they are too disorganized in the container storage yards, and they are not allowing the truckers to come in and pick up their cargo from the docks.

Then Sigs repeats that there is not any trucker shortage at the docks. This seems to be specifically referring to the West Coast docks, or the LA/Long Beach docks:
Quote:

Originally posted by SIGNYM:
I said the issue AT THE DOCKS wasn't due to trucker shortages. Twice. Again, we can all read what I posted, so stop trying to change it. AT THE DOCKS there is a huge line of trucks waiting for their cargo, and they wait - sometimes for HOURS.

Then this story, from unknown location about unknown port, which is automated ca5rgo trucks. It indicates there is a trucker shortage at this port:

It doesn't seem smart though a company pricing itself out of the natural market level of an economy, a rival company can open in Washington State, in New York, in Flordia, in Texas. If things got really stupid they could d that NAFTA highway and ship stuff from a port in Mexico or Canada.

SIGNYM

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

SIX: He didn't die of Covid because nobody dies of Covid.

SIGNYM: One day, SIX, if you ever get your shit together and stop denying reality like you stopped your drinking, this will be as embarassing as your drunk posts, JO753's RUSSIARUSSIA! paranoia, and AURAPTOR's IRAQWMD! hysteria. I hope you come to a point where you can look at this in hindsight with a clearer head.

SIX: There is nothing embarrassing about denying the existence of WMDs.
History will prove me right. It usually does.

Are you being dense on purpose? AURAPTOR's problem was that he was convinced ... convinced, I tell you! ... that Saddam had WMD. And no lack of supporting evidence ... or contrary evidence found ... could sway his mind. Not even GWB's failed WMD search was enough for him to see the truth.

Just like JO753 is convinced ... convinced, I tell you! ... that Putin is some evil mastermind and that everything bad that happens to us is because of Putin, despite the fact that everything he points to as evidence has been debunked five times over.

And then there's you, SIX. You're convinced ... convinced, I tell you! ... that SARS Cov-2 is just a universally-promoted government conspiracy designed to scare people. And no amount of peoples' direct experience with family and friends dead of Covid will make you see the truth.

*Yanno, when I type that out loud... that's an shocking level of crazy. Why would you defend it?

Experience with family and friends dead of Covid?

It's been going on two fucking years and I still don't know anybody who's even gotten it.
