Site went down around Midnight Mountain Time on Thursday night.

I made a plan to email Haken. Got to it today. About an hour later, still down. But shortly after that, back up again.

Pretty good response time.

I have seen others mention that they emailed Haken.

It is possible that Haken is waiting for a certain number of emails before he resets the site, turning it back on. If the specific count is not achieved, maybe it won't be turned back on.
Because I'm the longest delay to get to an email, it seems like my email is the trigger, not knowing how many other emails were sent, or when. There have been times when I have waited more than a day after sending my email before service was restored.

Just a thought.

Interesting observation. Haken is a mysterious one, isn't he?

The site recovery had nothing to do with me. It never has in the past either.

I'd love to help, but I never had Haken's email address and have never emailed him before.

Well... hold that thought...

At least not that I'm aware of. I just realized how huge a potential lie that was when I've got about 5-7 years of on the regular alcohol poisoning I subjected myself to in my very public past here.

I guess it is possible that I have emailed Haken over a thousand times.

I am beginning to wonder if Haken disabled the new member sign-up function as a way to avoid dealing with AI Bots.

Sure, it restricts membership volume, but maybe it actually saved the site.

I don't remember seeing any bot activity that would have warranted that reaction though, do you?

Plus, this site's so old and the traffic is so low I'm not convinced that anybody would bother targeting it with bots. You'd probably have to spend some time writing extra code to make it work on a site this old, and what's the ROI of botting a place that has half a dozen regular posters remaining anyhow?

I could be wrong, but I always just kind of assumed Haken was doing it for the same reasons that grocery stores will close their entrance doors at 9PM. The employees can't wrap up the place and call it a night until all the customers are gone. Of course he could just pull the plug anytime he wants to, but I figured he was just being a cool dude and letting the remaining people talk until there's nothing left to talk about before closing shop for good. I don't think there was really any risk of somebody coming here and signing up for a Web 1.0 Firefly fan site that doesn't even use HTTPS encryption in 2024, but there's no reason to leave the Entrance Door open after Last Call.
