I got about 6 months to teach myself Linux and/or figure out if I can change BIOS settings to make any of my existing tech capable of installing W11 and/or deciding if I even want to upgrade to W11 at all. Currently, all of my tech tells me that it's not compatible with the upgrade, but I do remember playing around with BIOS stuff a few years back on several of my computers and there should be a setting in there regarding some security feature that will enable the computer for upgrade once I flip that on or off. All of my computers except for one, anyhow. I guess that will end up a linux box or something.

You know how much eWaste Microsoft is going to be responsible for in 2025?

The amount is going to be staggering.

Good time for hobbyists though. We should be able to get old laptops and desktop computers in bulk for a song once everybody buys new computers last minute.

Ignoring it as long as hubby keeps our linux boxes running. Also, stuff I don't care about is running chrome.

Uuuuuughhhh... I just hate Linux though.

I mean, I don't hate it because it's the system that runs 99% of my modded things, but as a computer OS it's just still subpar after all these years. There are still things I use that can't be used on Linux, and frankly the file tree structure is just confusing. But at least I can figure it out, unlike when I attempted several times briefly to investigate the file structure on my brother's Mac and I didn't even know where to begin. That system is so protected from the end user it's bonkers.

Windows has been, up until this time at least, a better experience for me.

Are you using Windows 11 now?

I've heard horror stories like them injecting advertisements in your File Explorer window.

If that or anything like it is true, I won't be using Windows 11 for long.

I've got to figure this out soon too, because this is going to directly impact my aunt one way or another. When I found a guy who was selling off old stock from the hospital he worked at, I ended up getting a great deal on every laptop/desktop after the first one I bought, and he already gave me a really good price on the first one. So I bought myself a few extra and got my aunt her first desktop and laptop. They were only $200 combined, so it's not as if 4 years of use was a waste of money. But she's probably going to have to get a new laptop at least. I just need to figure out if we can update it or if I'll have to look around for a good deal for her.

Almost done with a huge aspect of my project, and most of that work will be winding down to completion over the next month and a half. I'll look deep into it then.

Not using Wn 11 at all. Is this another forced upgrade?

Yeah. They're ending all support for Windows 10, including security updates, sometime late this year. I think it's in October. In the past they supported security updates for years on an OS before forcing you to upgrade.

The worst part about this one is there are hard limits in the software that only allow 11 to be installed if the PC meets certain requirements. This has never happened before either. Even when moving to a 64-bit architecture, there was plenty of time given with the OS supporting both 32-bit and 64-bit at the same time. By the time you were forced to upgrade to 64-bit, there was no way your 32-bit machine would have even been able to keep up anymore anyhow. And up until now you were at least able to attempt to run a version upgrade and see if it performed okay before finally going out and upgrading your tech. Now it just completely bars you from upgrade, and you need to follow a link to see what all the requirements are.

So now you've got what probably amounts to about 100 Million or more PCs and Laptops that are currently in use in the US alone that will be immediately outdated overnight, and even dangerous to continue using online in October.

And the funniest thing is that there is a switch in the BIOS of many computers out there that is flipped in the wrong state by default which would allow many of these computers to be upgraded.

But how many people do you know that knows what a BIOS is, let alone how to get into it and change things without worrying that you're breaking something you know nothing about? You know that neither M$ nor any computer manufacturer is going to put out any PSA campaign to let people know that they don't have to throw out their old laptops when that eats away at their bottom line from both ends. The suits at all these companies have already planned out all their big vacations for the next decade off the profits they're about to get.

I wonder how may PCs are going to Goodwill or are going to be just thrown in the trash later this year that probably could have kept running for another 5 years, maybe only requiring a low-cost memory upgrade to keep them running at a good pace with all the additional overhead that comes with a bloated OS that just keeps getting more needlessly bloated.

Buy HP and/or DELL.

Oh... and the next time a company like Microsoft pretends that it cares about the environment, or minorities, or gay people or whatever bullshit woke ad campaign they're running on, remember that they did THIS.

I was wondering how that was coming along.
Congrats?

And ... wow, if you can figure out how to fix vars BIOS to make it compatible with Win11, you'd make a fortune!

And, screw "the man"!

Yanno... I thought about that.

When I go shopping, there's a few telephone polls in the area that have notices about "we'll buy your house for cash" and "Free Cable". Maybe put up my own sign.

It's not anything that I think most folk couldn't figure out on their own though. I just did a search on Google for "bios settings to change for windows 11" without the quote and my very first answer from Microsoft was what I was talking about.

HI, I am Dave, I will help you with this.

To install Windows, you just need to have BIOS in UEFI Mode, but that is now usually the defualt, and have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled, but on some devices to be able to boot from a USB to install Windows, you need to temporarily disable Secure Boot, those are the only necessary settings to set in your BIOS for Windows 11.

The UEFI/TPM 2.0/Secure Boot is all I was talking about. Might be more than 1 switch, but if you bought a computer long enough ago none of these are set to enabled by default, and you have to manually go in and change these things, and supposedly you can then upgrade.

You hear about "Awareness Campaigns", mostly from the left, for just about everything. If any of those fake tree-huggers want to actually do an awareness campaign that would actually have a positive impact on the world, they could probably keep at least 50 Million computers out of the trash if they spread the word about this.

Yanno... It occurs to me right now how often I might be doing the whole Reverse Dunning Kruger thing.

I posted a 2 sentence reply from some dude allegedly named Dave and thought to myself "Yup. That's the answer."

NGL... I'm only minimally knowledgeable about UEFI/TPM 2.0/Secure Boot.

These are things that came up years ago when I was trying to get an SSD installed in an AIO that was way too old to understand what it even was. I was playing around with a few newer computers a couple of years later when I upgraded to a newer AIO that could use an SSD and this all came up with Windows 11. I then let it all just kind of fade from my memory and the knowledge that Windows 10 was going to end in a few years has just been in the back of my mind somewhere since.

To put it another way, until I did that search, I wouldn't have been able to say the phrases UEFI, TPM or Secure Boot in relation to fixing the problem. All that remained in my mind of it was a fragment of a memory that I could probably fix my problem when the time came by screwing around with the BIOS.

But yeah....

I often discount the years of just playing around and beating the hell out of things I have under my belt. Most people wouldn't know how to even access their BIOS, and without knowing to look up the device make and manufacturer or MOBO information, they wouldn't even know which key(s) they needed to hold down on a fresh boot, since nobody ever bothered to standardize that.

And unless you have a newer GUI based bios, it's got that old Word Perfect look to it that's terrifying to Normies.

Sounds like you're square, Sigs.

If anybody else is going to need to upgrade but your PC is telling you that you can't, maybe I can help you figure it out.

Most people don't even know about BIOS, much less how to access it. If you could offer your services for a fee, you'd be making cash, saving them potentiallya lot of money, and even helping the environment.

What's not to like???

But I suggest you try it out on several different devices before putting yourself out there.

I was just writing my reply to your next post before you posted it Sigs.

To add though... I really don't know shit.

I'm just kind of fearless is all, when it comes to bending tech in pretzels and not worry about breaking anything. Either it's something that I know how to fix if I break it, it's already broken and I'm not going to make anything worse than it already is. If it's something that I couldn't reset to factory settings or build the way I wanted to from the base up in the case of a catastrophic failure while I'm tinkering with it, I'm not going to mess with it.

I've got 3 decades of this stuff under my belt now.

I had one good teacher in the tech-related field at Junior College that taught me something no other teacher had taught me. He allowed us to bring in and use our 80 page softcover book for the class on test days. He said that when you're in the field you're always going to have access to all of the information you need to solve any problem.

He didn't have easy Yes/No or A/B/C/D questions on his tests. You really had to think about the answers. And if you didn't memorize the 80 page book that was fine. If you were paying any attention at all you probably remembered enough about how you need to fix the problem that you could look up commands and what not in the book to answer them.

That's all that happened here.

I remembered just enough to look it up in the manual when the time came to work on it.
