What happened in 1988? Nothing: In the 1988 presidential election, Republican Vice President George H. W. Bush defeated Democratic governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts.

Bush benefited from the popularity and active help of his boss, President Reagan, and he could reasonably point to peace, widespread prosperity and a rekindled national spirit that Democrats had trouble refuting.

About the only down side of Bush's victory was that it was achieved against the backdrop of one of the lowest presidential-election turnouts this century. Few voters expressed enthusiasm for their choices. Bush, in particular, drew criticism for negative campaigning, and both candidates had unfavorable ratings much higher than was usual for presidential nominees.
