RHYMEPHILE

After showing "Once More With Feeling" to some friends this weekend (*waves at Manthastar and Firefloozysuzie*) who had never seen it, I of course needed to watch it again.

But, since I've seen it umpteen times, I thought watching it in a different language would be interesting.

It's amazing that the French and Spanish versions use all the same music, and a lot of the words even rhyme. I didn't really think that would be the case. I know a little bit of Spanish and hardly any French, so it was really cool to hear all the words to the songs I already know sung differently.

The French Spike has a pretty darn good singing voice. It's a bit low, but it sounds okay. James Marsters's singing voice is higher pitched than his French counterpart. Hearing "Let Me Rest in Peace" is quite interesting in French, because at times he needs to sing slower due to the French inflections. The French Giles is pretty good too. Giles sounds good any time, but especially in French! The French version of Tara sounds like a warbling matron of 80 at an opera house. Low scores for her. And the French Xander actually captures the voice of the US Xander fairly well. The duet with Anya actually sounded a lot like Nicholas Brendon.

Strangely enough, though, the Spanish version of "Let Me Rest in Peace" isn't dubbed into Spanish. It's still in English. I wonder if the Spanish Spike couldn't sing or something. All the other songs are in Espanol except that one. Perhaps it couldn't be translated appropriately?

Listening also makes me appreciate subtitles in foreign movies even more. These are the voices people who speak French and Spanish have had to listen to all these years? I feel sorry for our foreign friends who yearn to hear the actual actors' voices without dubbing, in all of Joss's shows.

yeah, I've posted on this before, but as someone who had to spend time in France and watch the scarey dubbed versions I can agree it's not so fun. The French voices always seemed a little high pitched... MInd you, my French friends told me they found English-speakers spoke in very low voices...
