Wow, what if George Lucas said, "America has turned to the dark side of the Force."

Or if Joss said, "America is one big Hell Mouth."

"Winter is coming."

Well, it's a proven fact that Winter does, in fact, come after fall. So, yes, Winter is coming.

And I like Winter.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you've not read the Song of Ice and Fire books by George R.R. Martin. "Winter is coming" is a quote from those books - and it doesn't indicate pleasant times by the fire with a steaming mug of cocoa.

Wow, Mr. Martin's vision of America is just as fictional as his novels.

Most of the "woes" the US is facing began years ago.

The "future of war" has been going on for a decade or so.

The "isolation" abroad ignores the very real global political realignment. We don't need allies like France who turn away when we ask them for help. We don't need the support of the UN that is corrupted by money and sexual misconduct at its highest levels (we do that well enough ourselves, but at least we get a vote in who runs us). But in a changing world we have new allies in Eastern Europe, stronger allies in countries like Italy, Spain, and Britain, and lets not forget our good friends in Kuwait and our new allies of Iraq and Afganistan. Not to mention 30 to forty others. I'd rather be "isolated" with a few dozen friends then engaged to 3 or 4 enemies, but then I've never been married, so who knows.

The "division" at home is what happens from time to time in a real Democracy, after all Saddam got 97% or the vote in his last election.

And the "repression" is no worse then its ever been, meaning that our Democracy is a work in progress and always has been. It'll never be "perfect" so we have to settle for "more perfect".

That being said: WE WON WE WON WE WON HAHAHAHAHA YOU CAN KISS MY HAIRY BLACK A...er...DOG! (Sorry, I keep forgeting we're not supposed to mention color.)

Oh, and Mr. Martin needs to realize that he might be a liberal, but the heroes of his books seem to be conservative.

I'm a fan of The George Martin, Song of Ice and Fire series as well, Astriana. Tash got me started on them. They're a great read, and I recommend them to one and all. Currently enjoying the 3rd book.

I have nothing against mentioning color, by the way. Just a guess here. U don't sound like you're black, Hero. If you actually are, I am sincerely sorry... for you. You are very out of touch with your people. Look at the DC vote for president. Overwhelmingly against Bush. The population of DC, almost all black. Those closest to Bush know him best. Matter of fact, you seem out of touch with America, in general. Look at the dissatisfaction and dissent in this thread alone. There is no united America under GW. Also look at the isolation abroad, though it's not complete at present, is growing. (sadly) The world has pulled away from the US and they continue to do so en masse. Check out the news. We are losing more support all the time. Countries that support us now are planning to leave in the very near future. (start of the year, or a few months away.) Do you think I want this to happen? We keep pushing away every country and peace-keeping body that says wait a minute, lets discuss this course of action for a while. Did you notice that @ 3000 reserves were activated the day of the election? Do you think that means we're getting more support? No, we're going to have to endure this war on obscurity with an increasingly smaller allied base. Likely, our enemies will ally against us and the war will be brought to our own soil. Winter is indeed coming. There are 4 times as many Chinese people than the rest of us put together, and they aren't too happy with us. Do you think Korea is happy with us either? We're going to need all the friends we can get. We need to discard our preconceptions that countries with slightly different moral values as America should be turned away and shunned. Just because they didn't support our (excuse me george's) war, doesn't make them something to be thrown away. That's how you make enemies, that's how grudges form and countries eventually go to war with each other. Geeesh, over half the people in America Don't Support the war either. That's not the issue the election was decided upon though. American's are more selfish than that. People, bigoted, scared people, potentially denied rights or money in their own backyard is much more important than a hundred thousand people getting sent to heaven or hell on the other side of the world. It's just too far away for us to care enough. We've voted on it. So congratulations, keep on laughing, maybe it'll keep you sane as you watch the world fall apart around you, or maybe it'll keep you company in your padded cell.

So, the country will be more or less united under Kerry if he was voted in?

just checking.

Last I looked, half of the country thinks George is an AssMonkey, and the other half thinks Kerry is a Monkey's Ass.

I don't think I mentioned Kerry. But I see the point you are trying to make. No, I doubt the country would be more united under Kerry or anyone else at this point. Our country has allowed itself to be driven into the ground. The division is deep and probably long-lasting.

Anyway, the point I was making is that division amongst ourselves and shunning our foreign neighbors is the wrong way to go. And that is the way we are going.

I don't think the country is as divided as the media portrays it. Ultimately many of us..those in the middle of the road, share the same values, hopes and dreams..both Liberal and Conservative. The problem is that the far left of the democratic party and the far right of the republican party made it appear as so.

In my view Bush could have been defeated if the Dems had taken a more centrist attitude towards America (much like Clinton did in his 2 terms) rather then allow Hollywood and the media dictate the party platform. They also could've won if they had nominated a far stronger candidate. Kerry was very bad, much like Dukakis and Mondale before him.

To be honest a John McCain or a Joe Lieberman would've been much better for us.

I yearn for the Democrats of old who were strong on defense and strong on social issues. All this BS about stem cells, abortion and protection of Marriage killed any thought of a vote for the Republicans. Though I have to say..I'm still pissed that Schumer got elected again to the senate.

I'm looking forward to '08 and a change.

I am a soldier stationed in Iraq now and thought I'd give my POV to this little discussion.

1. America is not divided where it counts, sure the politics got bad starting with the lefts 527s (read Soros) a full two years before the election. The right fires back with the SWV adds and it got ugly quick. The media has blown this all out of proportion and it is magnified because of compairson with post 9/11 unity.

2. The doom and gloom talk is utter nonsense, we are winning the war on terror, I know I'm here and the terrorist are here, a much better place for them to be than the hills of western Pennsylvania where my wife and three beautiful doughters would be defenceless against them. Make no mistake Saddam was a terrorist sponser, enabled by France and Germanies blatent disregard for UN sanctions. Although many Sunnis were very fond of the "oil for Palaces" program the UN ran.

3. If this were Westros Bush would be a Stark and Kerry a Frey.

I agree with you Slackmaster, it's much better for the war to be abroad than at home. I doubt anyone would dispute you that, but don't you think we shouldn't have dulled our military might on the lesser target? (Tell me I'm wrong in thinking the majority of our might is in Iraq.) We (American public) want the target who's responsible for 9/11, not the target who also happens to be a target. Why aren't you military types getting in the face of your commanders about that?

Wow! I did not expect this great a response. Thanks to all of you and I hope you had a great Veteran's day also. Agree with my statements or not each and every one of us should thank a Veteran for our right to express our views.

For ManiacNumberOne, do you really believe we have dulled our military might? Your statement could not be farther from the truth. There are two distinct categories that need to be looked at when responding to your allegation of a dulled military might.

1. Capability; our forces are more trained now than ever before. The already honed active component, the best fighting force the world has ever seen is now even sharper. The one area that Combatant Commanders had expressed concern in was the ability to fight in a joint operation, which is no longer a concern. Our reserve forces are also sharpened by these deployments; with the exception of a few countries our reserve forces are equal and most times better than other countries active forces.

2. Strategic capability; for the answer to this all you need to do is look at a map of the region. A cynical person would use our strategic positioning as an indicator to the actual reason we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq.

But the point is moot because you say
Quote:

We (American public) want the target who's responsible for 9/11,
9/11 is a product of countries that condone and sponsor terrorism, of which Iraq is most definitely one. Just ask the mothers of suicide bombers in Palestine who received 25, 000 dollars for raising a terrorist who killed civilians in Israel.

Just so you know, I thanked my dad for being a veteran, also two of my brothers, a nephew and a brother-in-law.

I do indeed believe that America has dulled it's military might. You prolly misunderstood what I meant when I said that. Capability of our forces has very little to do with them getting dulled. Our forces in Afghanistan have been stymied, due to lack of military support and poor leadership. Our leaders are spreading our forces too thin around the world, leaving us not as capable to deal with other threats. I didn't mean that we are not the best fighting force in the world, nor that we are better trained than we used to be. That is not in dispute.

To make an analogy, consider our terrorist-fighting forces to be the men on a chess board. The 9/11 terrorists are the opposing side. You should want to spend your valuable pieces(our army) on pieces that will have more value. Our forces are attacking a minor pawn or perhaps a knight far away from the king and queen. Iraq is that minor pawn. So when I say we've dulled our military might, I mean it. The American people are not an endless reserve of soldiers waiting to happen.

You may believe that the 9/11 terrorists are sitting in Iraq, but it's not so. Are you aware of the nationalities of the terrorists? I'll provide a link below with all the terorist identities and nationalities that shows that none of the terrorists were Iraqi. They were saudi's and egyptian's.

Iraq wasn't a threat to America until we went in there. Bush made Iraq into the twin-sized bed of terrorists that it now is.

I am also a soldier, and I write this from Afghanistan. I disagree with Bush being a Stark though, he's more like a Lanister to me, sorry but Bush is the kingslayer as far as I'm concerned. I dont much like Kerry either. I also don't like it when soldiers use there postion to state a political opinion, but since one "joe" has put his 2 cents in then here's mine.

I also fail to see how we are winning the war on terror, our track records on the war on (insert noun here) has never been good, anyone been keeping track on how well our war on drugs is going? Wars on nouns generaly end up face first in the dirt.

I was talking about this with Tash the other night. We agreed, I think, that Bush is like a Lannister, but also like a Stark. It depends upon how you look at them, and which particular Stark you're talking about. Bush definitely isn't Ned Stark, bu he has similarities to Robb. Think about what Robb has done, He has waged wars far away from home, he has made alliances and also enemies in the process, and he has lost his base of support here at home. Much like Robb Stark who went off fighting wars abroad and lost Winterfell. Bush is a twisted mix of Robb and Jamie, perhaps even Lord Tywin.

George W. makes me think more of a Theon Greyjoy, the ne'er-do-well son of a cold powerbroker. Winterfell is the Texas he has adopted as his "base." I don't think that Kerry would really be much of a player in Westeros, prolly some Highgarden lord contesting for the throne after all the Baratheons and the Lanisters are dead. I think the closest match for this world is Robert Baratheon and Bill Clinton, if Robert had kept his edge. I don't think any of these jokers have the moral integrity to put them in the Stark line. Ned knew that a Stark's place is at Winterfell, Rob's a child of 15 out of his depth. If only America had a Tyreon.
