A Mass Shooter? Reports of People shot dead after shooting on Las Vegas Strip, at a Concert?
....possibly not terror NOT terrorist related, so the guy is not from the Middle East, didn't log on ISIS websites or say Al Lah Ackbar!? Shooting occurring at the Tropicana, another shooting at luxor in vegas, shooting at Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Seems like another Mass Shooting? show with video where you can hear automatic weapon fire. They cut to video where somebody is firing on the crowd. From the video, it looks bad situation. It may have been multiple shooters, it was a lot of burst...Police now say they have one suspect they were looking for, multiple casualties near Mandalay Bay Casino. People were running, hiding behind objects for cover, one of duty police officer shot dead while out with his family? Gunshots and deaths at Jake Owen music, a Country Music concert? in Las Vegas Village, Police Reports say he was shooting from 32nd floor of hotel - the Gunman was then shot dead - Police have found gunman's female companion, Marilou Danley?

something perhaps Similar to the historical Texas Tower Shootings? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Whitman
Quote:
Charles Joseph Whitman (June 24, 1941 – August 1, 1966) was an American mass murderer who became infamous as the "Texas Tower Sniper". On August 1, 1966, he murdered his mother and wife in their homes, then went to the University of Texas at Austin where he shot and killed three people inside the university's tower. He then went to the tower's 28th-floor observation deck, where he fired at random for some 96 minutes, killing an additional eleven people and wounding thirty-one before being shot and killed by police. Sixteen people were killed in total; a 17th victim died in 2001 from injuries sustained in the attack.

Officers responded to that hotel room and engaged the suspect, killing him, police said. They do not believe at this time that there were any other shooters, despite reports of multiple gunmen. Police said they do not have an accurate number of victims yet.... Mass Murdering Shooter was Possibly Going Through a Divorce & Sued a Las Vegas Strip Casino in 2012. Dan Bilzerian, the professional poker player and businessman, posted a video running from the concert saying, “a girl just got shot in the f*cking head.”

It sounds as if the family had no idea what was going on with the presumed shooter
Quote:
The suspected shooter’s brother, Eric Paddock, said the family was stunned by the news.
“We have no idea. We’re horrified. We’re bewildered and our condolences go out to the victims,” Eric Paddock said in a brief telephone interview, his voice trembling. “We have no idea in the world.”

Given the suspect's age, he probably wasn't on social media. He didn't have a criminal record, he wasn't a military vet or retired law enforcement.
It's a little late for schizophrenia to be showing up. Usually begins in late teens and early twenties, and if you've been schizophrenic for a long time, your family probably knows. So ... Somebody with a recent stroke or other neurological event? An ultra-religious person attacking Sodom and Gomorrah? A 2nd amendment fanatic attacking people that he felt didn't walk the talk?

Brianna Hendricks (left) was attending the concert with mother Shawn (right) and said a woman ran up to them shouting 'you're all going to die' around an hour before the shooting
...
'There was a lady who came running up behind us in the concert and she started to play with people's hair acting crazy and she told us that we're all going to f***ing die.
'She said they're all around us and we were going to die.
so
...was this just some random 'crazy' lady they met in Vegas
or was it connected to the attacks?

However I was wondering if you buy a lot of guns, purchase say 10 or 20 or 30 guns does that itself not set off flags...ATF officials sopme federal reactions to one person suddenly having too many guns? I dunno national security, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, NSA they spy on emails etc would they not have known something?
I think he might have already been know for some minor criminal offense according to the online links...but yeah didn't sound too serious a threat and was maybe an old guy living at some retirement camp/village not going to set off any red flags or alarms with Law Enforcement, National Security or FBI

One clue to whether this was a man who just went off his nut because of a stroke, advancing neurological degeneration, or drug use ... or someone who was honing a longstanding grotch against a particular group of people for ideological reasons .... would be the length of time over which he acquired his (considerable) store of weapons.
If he'd been buying them over the past 10 years, I'd say that this was long in the making. But if he purchased them all in the past six months, I'd look for some medical issue.
I'm a bit wary of what we'll find in the media. EVERYONE is going to want to spin this.
DHS has no reason to admit that there was a longstanding threat that they didn't find, despite the NSA's universal surveillance, even if there was one. And they SURE aren't going to admit that he was in the illegal NSA database, even if he was. Since he apparently had a foreign gf, this would have given the NSA the right to snoop in on their communications. But any info they might have on HIM will have to be reconstructed from other "legal" sources of info, so even if they know all about this guy, it will take a while for anything to come out. In any case, DHS says no credible threat to any other venues. Not sure that DHS has much credibility to say that. I mean .... how would they know? They missed him, didn't they? In fact, despite them looking up everybody's anus, they didn't predict ANY of the recent mass shootings, whether ideologically-inspired or not.
Rightwing will want to say that more guns would have solved the problem. Left-wing will want to say he's right-wing, or that he was a nutcase, or both.
Either way, the predicted media response will be for more government surveillance and more gun control.

But he had a lot of guns in his room. You don't go to Vegas to gamble with at least ten weapons in your possession just in case you lose. IF that were the case, everyone would visit Las Vegas with an arsenal. There was SOME forethought to this.
The guy was pretty young to be retired. Maybe he just got a bad diagnosis. Maybe he thought his retirement and his health care were going to disappear. But then, why shoot at random people, unless he felt that they were somehow to blame? The thing I hear about NV is that taxes are really low BECAUSE of the gambling and entertainment revenues. Wouldn't he see them as part of the solution, not part of the problem?
Maybe he had a serious gambling problem. Maybe he thought Las Vegas was the source of all of his ills.
I'd be really interested in how any of this makes sense.

Yet you've played ultraviolent video games, and are probably one of the ones that say that doesn't mean anything. And I'm pretty sure you've watched your share of ultraviolent movies, you hypocrite. Ever seen ANY of the Die Hard movies? Sin City? Rambo? You're no hippy. (Not to mention, but Firefly isn't exactly free from violence, either!)
The truth is- if you're going to snap, you're going to snap no matter what you've seen and heard, but the games and movies don't help.
What makes more people violent than anything else is THESE kinds of shootings. Guys sit around and fantasize about being the "hero" who stops a shooter, arm themselves to an insane level, and then they have a bad day and do it themselves.

Quote:In other words, he was shooting at people who - up until recently - could have been him.
Before he opened fire late Sunday, gunman Stephen Paddock lived a quiet life for years in a small town outside Las Vegas, the WaPo writes.
A retired man, Paddock often visited Las Vegas to gamble and take in concerts, his relatives said. Public records show he was a licensed pilot, who owned two planes. And he had a hunting license from Alaska ... Family members said that Paddock spent much of his retirement in recent years staying in hotels in Las Vegas and gambling. They said he listened to country music and went to concerts at Vegas hotels.
So there's another avenue to pursue. In addition to trying to find out WHEN he purchased his guns, when was the last time (previous to this time?) that he checked into a hotel or gambled in Las Vegas? When did he have a sudden change of heart?
ISIS, btw, claims credit for this.

When it comes to mass shootings, credit needs to go where credit is due.

You wanted equality, you're going to get it. Expect stats like you just posted to even out in the next 15-20 years. KPO can put that in the predictions thread.

CBS fires vice president who said Vegas victims didn't deserve sympathy because country music fans 'often are Republican'

Quote:
CBS has parted ways with one of the company’s top lawyers after she said she is “not even sympathetic” to victims of the Las Vegas shooting because “country music fans often are Republican,” when discussing the tragic mass shooting that occurred in Las Vegas late Sunday night.
“This individual, who was with us for approximately one year, violated the standards of our company and is no longer an employee of CBS. Her views as expressed on social media are deeply unacceptable to all of us at CBS. Our hearts go out to the victims in Las Vegas and their families,” a CBS spokeswoman told Fox News.
Hayley Geftman-Gold, the network's now-former vice president and senior counsel, took to Facebook after a gunman opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, killing at least 58 people and sending more than 500 others to hospitals.
“If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs [sic] will ever do the right thing,” Geftman-Gold wrote in a now-deleted message that was first reported and captured by The Daily Caller.
Geftman-Gold continued: “I’m actually not even sympathetic bc [sic] country music fans often are Republican gun toters [sic].”
Geftman-Gold is presumably referring to Sandy Hook, which occurred in Newtown, Conn. back in 2012. A 20-year-old gunman, Adam Lanza, killed 20 children and six adults during the tragic event that sparked intense political debates regarding gun control.
Geftman-Gold did not work directly with the network’s news division. According to her LinkedIn bio, Geftman-Gold worked at CBS since September 2016 and graduated from the prestigious Columbia University law school in 2000.

All I have to do is look at Christine Lagarde, or "Mutti" Merkel, or Hillary ("we came, we saw, he died") Clinton ...Women may not instigate as much PERSONAL violence, but they sure don't mind if the guys do their dirty work for them.
By the way, SIX, I doubt that females will catch up to males in terms of interpersonal violence. It can be instigated and increased by society, but I don't think it will ever even out because, across millenia and dozens of societies, it never has. I've never read of a bona fide report of a society of "women warriors". (The Amazons were myth, not reality.) But, we shall see.

Of this entire list of 128 rampage killers in the western hemisphere, going back to 1863, there's only 1 woman (Fugate, a teenager) listed, and she's in tandem with a much older male boyfriend and accomplice (Starkweather). Since that covers a very lengthy timespan and multiple cultures, where the roles of women were vastly different and undergoing active change, it's a pretty solid observation. Men can take credit for 99%+ of rampage killings.

By the way, SIX, I doubt that females will catch up to males in terms of interpersonal violence. It can be instigated and increased by society, but I don't think it will ever even out because, across millenia and dozens of societies, it never has. According to NBC News national correspondent Peter Alexander, Eric Paddock has revealed that their father, Patrick Benjamin Paddock, was a bank robber who used to be on the FBI's Most Wanted list.
The Daily Intelligencerobtained an FBI poster dating back to 1969 that depicts a wanted man by the name of Benjamin Hoskins Paddock, who was "diagnosed as psychopathic, has carried firearms in commission of bank robberies" and "reportedly has suicidal tendencies and should be considered armed and very dangerous."

Personally I believe there may have been just 'one shooter' I know witness and even police remarked about more than one shooter, but its possible people were mistaken. in the blood, chaos and a streesful situation visual witness testimony can be un-reliable...a clear picture can distort over a few mins of strees and people do sometimes recall stuff incorrectly, the guy was heavily armed, may have quickly reloaded and used other guns or there may have been 'echos' of sound around the streets and buildings giving the illusion of more than one shooter?

. His late father, a notorious bank robber who spent eight years on the FBI’s 10 Most Wanted List after escaping from a federal prison in Texas, was a very different kind of criminal. The elder Paddock, whose nicknames included “Big Daddy” and “Chrome Dome,” was charged in 1960 with stealing about $25,000 from three separate bank branches in Phoenix, Arizona. Paddock was 34 at the time, and had already been to prison twice for his role in what the Arizona Republic called “confidence games.”
Who is Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock?
https://fellowshipoftheminds.com/2017/10/02/who-is-las-vegas-shooter-s

Born on April 9, 1953, Stephen Paddock was 64 years old, a retired accountant with a taste for high-stakes poker who had moved to Nevada just a couple of years earlier. He lived in an upscale retirement community, Sun City Mesquite, at 1372 Babbling Brook Ct, Mesquite, NV 89034, 80 miles northeast of Las Vegas. Police is currently searching his home.
He had working ties to Goddard? NASA and Lockheed?
Stephen Paddock had worked for Lockheed Martin for three years in the 1980s. A Lockheed spokesman said:
“Stephen Paddock worked for a predecessor company of Lockheed Martin from 1985 until 1988. We’re cooperating with authorities to answer questions they may have about Mr. Paddock and his time with the company.”
Stephen Paddock had the number 13 tattooed on his neck.
There’s video footage showing someone who looks like Stephen Paddock in a pink NASA t-shirt wearing a pink pussy hat, at an anti-Trump protest in August 2017 in Reno, NV. (Recall that Paddock had another home in Reno, and had worked for Lockheed Martin, a defense/NASA contractor). The video was uploaded to IndivisibleKara’s Twitter account on August 23, 2017.
Steven Haffley found and uploaded to YouTube a video that better shows the guy in the pink pussy hat, who was standing next to a woman who looks like Marilou Danley.

The shooters who left digital trails have made it clear that their actions were prompted by their perceived loss of power and status in society. They felt slighted by women who do not obey them and their desires, by people of color and queer folks who have fought for, earned, and defended their civil rights, and by a society that doesn’t afford them the respect and place they believe they deserve by accident of their race and gender. They are the product of a changed and ever-changing social context in which historic forms of power and domination are being slowly but loudly destabilized, and of a society that socializes them to believe that this is wrong, and that they deserve to be in positions of power.

Most mass-shooters turn out to be merely a white American man with a non-immigrant-sounding name, from Charles Whitman at the University of Texas tower back in 1966 onward. And from Whitman onward, killers of this sort are described as “deranged” or “disturbed” or “resentful,” their crimes a reflection of their own torment rather than any larger trend or force. They are “troubled” youths, like the white teenaged boy who shot up classmates in West Paducah, Kentucky, in 1997, or the two white teenaged boys who shot up classmates in Columbine, Colorado, two years later, or the white teenaged boy who carried out the atrocity in Newtown, Connecticut. Or “troubled” older people, like the white man in his 60s who shot up the congressional baseball game this summer. A report on the congressional-baseball shooter described his “descent into rage.”
If the killers are not whites with “normal” names, the responsibility for their crime would not be assigned solely to themselves and their tortured psyches.
If killers have Arab-sounding names, it's a new episode of jihad. How often has Donald Trump invoked “San Bernardino” in his speeches, as shorthand for the terrorist threat in our heartland?
If killers are Mexican, they would demonstrate the perils of immigration, and that Mexico is “not sending its best people.”
If killers are illegal immigrants, they’d dramatize the need to crack down harder, right now.
And if killers are black, I shudder to imagine the consequences.

I think I mentioned it's a gender issue, but you made record time in absolving white men for their part. Black males only make up 16% of mass shooters (meaning more than two at a setting). I expected you to make the same tired comment about "How many shootings in Chicago every weekend?" that white men make EVERY TIME gun control is brought up.
So far I've noticed this pattern among white men that they don't want to admit they have irrational anger issues. Deep-level denial is partially why this crap keeps happening.

The CDC analyzed the murders of women in 18 states from 2003 to 2014, finding a total of 10,018 deaths. Of those, 55 percent were intimate partner violence-related, meaning they occurred at the hands of a former or current partner.

More men are raped in the U.S. than woman, according to figures that include sexual abuse in prisons.
In 2008, it was estimated 216,000 inmates were sexually assaulted while serving time, according to the Department of Justice figures.
That is compared to 90,479 rape cases outside of prison.
Boys were killed in unintentional shootings more than three times as often as girls. And boys were more than 10 times as likely as girls to pull the trigger in an unintentional shooting

We’d be scheduling immediate hearings in Congress about the worst domestic terrorism event since 9/11. Then President Donald Trump would be tweeting every hour “I told you so,” as he does minutes after every terror attack in Europe, precisely to immediately politicize them. Then there would be immediate calls for a commission of inquiry to see what new laws we need to put in place to make sure this doesn’t happen again.
We will turn the world upside down to track down the last Islamic State fighter in Syria. And how many Americans has the Islamic State killed in the Middle East? I forget. Is it 15 or 20? Fewer than 59 killed in Las Vegas. And our president never stops telling us that when it comes to ISIS, defeat is not an option.
But when fighting the NRA — the National Rifle Association, which more than any other group has prevented the imposition of common-sense gun-control laws — victory is never an option.

While men constitute the majority of those convicted of a violent crime, the majority of men aren't violent. Although I can't find the simple statistic "What percent of men have been convicted of a violent crime?" a full 97% of white men and 80% of black men have never been jailed. http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/000312240406900201 And unless you're willing to say that there is a racial component of violence, it's clear from the disparate stats on blacks versus whites that part of that disparity is social, and not related to sex.
So while it is fair to say that the majority of violent criminals are men, it's NOT fair to say that the majority of men are violent criminals.
Men are also more likely to be autistic https://molecularautism.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13229-015-

more likely to be both less and MORE intelligent than women https://qz.com/441905/men-are-both-dumber-and-smarter-than-women/
and more likely to be sociopaths https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23544428
It's almost as if there are more genetic controls on female brain development/behavior than on male brain development/behavior. From an evolutionary standpoint, that would make sense since females are the primary caregivers and females are also the rate-limiting step in human reproduction.
Well. In any case, back to violence. Men in all cultures are on the average more violent than women in that culture, but the rate varies widely by culture: We Americans would rate men in highly conformist cultures (Japan, Denmark) to be virtually non-violent by our standards. And most men are, as a whole, non violent in ANY culture.
Like any trait that exists on a distribution, it's impossible to castigate an entire sex for the deviance of a percentage of its members.
I guess the real question is whether this male/female discrepancy in violence is consequential to the greatest discrepancy in our current society, which is the huge WEALTH GAP in which a tiny fraction of society has commandeered the majority of wealth.
My guess is that today, the real critical sex difference is sociopathy, not interpersonal violence, since violent people tend to be poorer and therefore more often victims of successful sociopaths. IF we were to make a difference in society, we would be arresting sociopaths of either sex, not the violent.
In other words, as headline-grabbing as the mass shooter is, the overwhelming majority of people will never encounter one. OTOH, the sociopathic practices of the CEOs of Equifax, Wells Fargo, Microsoft, and Facebook, and the sociopathic policies of our fearless leaders affect almost everyone.
Hard to do, but we should be looking at successful sociopaths, not the criminally violent, no matter how splashy their actions. While I'm as guilty as anyone with a "traffic accident" attention focus, it's not the Stephen Paddocks who are driving society.

Sorry, I dispute that. Violence isn't JUST in criminal convictions. It's the whole picture. Which was MY point. Every man I've ever met is violent in some way. Whether it's beating the kids, the wife, sport shooting, violent games, self-harm, punching walls, OR going to jail for something.

But this is a white man's problem. According to an analysis by Mother Jones, out of 62 cases between 1982 and 2012 (a time period that would not include the actions of Dylann Roof or Stephen Paddock, among others), 44 of the killers were white men and only one was a woman. Since 1982, mass shootings in the United States have been committed by white men who are often labeled "lone wolves" or "psychologically impaired." As a result, the government that would otherwise be mobilizing its institutions to bring about reform remains a stalwart of the Second Amendment and mass shootings' greatest ally. An over-affinity for guns among white men, dangerous against any other backdrop, gets defended as patriotism by many conservatives or even as white pride by those on the alt-right.
In fact, according to a 2014 poll conducted by Fox News, nearly seven in 10 Republicans believed that gun ownership is patriotic. If espoused by other groups, this sentiment and this number might be considered threatening. Instead, it is welcomed in a way that many believe gives tacit encouragement to potential mass shooters.

I could identify as a man for my entire adult life, but hey, if on next Tuesday, I changed my mind and wanted to identify as a woman, that's OK !
But one mass shooting, and it's suddenly MEN SUCK ! MEN ARE VIOLENT ! MEN DO DRUGS !!! ...
Fair enough. But speaking of DRUGS, does anyone want to address the elephant in the room that every mass shooter was on some form of psychotropic medication ??
Or is that a FACT we just want to gloss over , hmmmm ??

That's an interesting point you made, I wonder if this also applied overseas, many shooting happened in the USA but I know there are a few mass murder rampage killers that also occured in Canada, France, Australia, England, Switzerland.... I wonder if in these cases too the person or people were on some kind of psycological medications...

I agree, we've failed to evolve to rid ourselves of religion and political parties fast enough, we've failed to give mandatory mental health screenings (of which you would fail COMPLETELY) and limit the amount of weapons you can own and NOT be a dealer. We've failed to elect sane and competent leadership, and sponsor comprehensive education and health plans.
We have also failed to get white males to see they have smaller penises than black males, which is causing many problems. They buy guns to compensate, then shoot people when they can no longer get it up, It's VERY sad.

@ wishi - apparently you've been in a deep coma for the past 10 years. Yes, many have been saying that men and women are exactly the same, and that gender is a false social construct. And the issue here is not "jobs". My God, we're talking about the physiology and biological differences of men and women. Our bodies are different, our brains to work differently. That is undeniable.
I know for damn sure that I am wasting my time trying to explain this to a person who is dead set on trying to steer the conversation into uncharted, unrelated matters.
NOTIFY: N | REPLY | REPLY WITH QUOTE | PERMALINK | TOP | HOME
I don't mean to derail the thread from the shooting event, there's a lot of new and puzzling information coming out about it this. For example, when I first heard that Paddock had 10 guns in his hotel room, I wondered how he could have gotten all of them past hotel security. Now that I read that he had "over 20" guns in his room, plus who-knows-how-many magazines of ammo ... it's not that a 64 year-old man couldn't carry all that stuff up to his room, but it would require MANY trips .... with heavy bags ... up the elevator. So, what is Mandalay Bay .... the Equifax of hotel security??
But to get back to the issue of men and women ... WISHY, if you insist that "men" are more violent than "women", and you make this an issue of sex, then you're opening yourself up to the argument that "men" are also SMARTER than women because of their sex. Discrimination based on genetics cuts both ways.
I think YOUR problem, WISHY, and a problem that a LOT of people have, is that they deal with people categorically instead of individually. We get used to talking about "men" and "women" and "old people" and "they" as if every single member meets the characteristics that we've assigned to the category. "Men" are more violent than women, "men" are taller than women, "men" are smarter than women. IN REALITY, there is a huge overlap between men and women. Yes, men ON THE AVERAGE are taller than women, but does that mean that all men are taller than all women? Yes, men on the average have a slightly higher IQ than women, but did you know that Emmy Noether, a female mathematician in pre-WWII Europe and contemporary of Einstein, solved a mathematical conundrum at the heart of Einstein's theory by forwarding a theorem now called "Noether's Theorem", and that Einstein called her a "genius"? Yes, "men" are ON THE AVERAGE more violent than women, but there are plenty of peaceable men, and plenty of violent women. Instead of dealing with people categorically, maybe we should assess them individually? Statistics do indeed tell us something about the associations of one thing to another .... blacks are interpersonally more violent than whites, but whites are mass murderers ... but instead treating everyone as if they're the inevitable outcome of their genes, we should probably look at them as individuals instead. That overcomes the problem of both positive and negative prejudice.
Back to our regularly scheduled topic ....

Are you suggesting there's something wrong with an American citizen carrying his arsenal of 20 guns around with him? Is that not his constitutional right?

I'm a woodworker. Have been since I was old enough to swing a hammer. In Jr High, I was put in a group with other males who would not let me touch a single tool for a group project. I went and did my own project and got an D on it because I!!! didn't work in the group when there was NO working with them.
Took woodshop and tech crew in high school when all the other girls -except one- didn't. I have seen how incredibly assholic a male can be to a female when she holds power tools... dozens of times. The other girl was injured because of a guy in the class that just could not leave her alone. Had to have plastic surgery on her face.
I even worked at a veneer plant with all guys who tried to get me fired when I suggested to the boss he have a talk with one of the pricks that could not shut up about "T and A" ALL DAY LONG. I didn't go above anyone's head, I didn't file anything, I tried to be civil and they tried to fire me for it! I had to threaten to sue. The plant closed a couple weeks later, thankfully.
I have three family members who work construction. Had I been born with a penis, I would have been invited to join the family business, but because I have tits instead, two of them cannot even look me in the eye when they speak to me.
When I was a night manager at a gas station, one of the people I was in charge of was infatuated with me. Used to call me at home and tell me he loved me (he was 46, black, a drunk, and a foot shorter than me
). I finally had to tell him off, and he decided that after that he wasn't going to do anything I asked him to do, so I ended up doing BOTH our jobs, until I could find another. The ONLY males I have found that have half of brain one are on the Autism Spectrum, and it's because they are smart enough to know gender doesn't really matter. They get put down because they are different, so they know what that means. Have not met one neuro-typical male who could put the gender crap down long enough to just get the damn work done.
I have many many more stories, but because I am the only female living near my grandmother (as she had three sons and my mother lives in Texas) I spent all day driving her around and doing ridiculous nonsensical errands (today was picking up an old carpet remnant so she could put it in the garage??) and I am tired.

SIG: it's not that a 64 year-old man couldn't carry all that stuff up to his room, but it would require MANY trips .... with heavy bags ... up the elevator. So, what is Mandalay Bay .... the Equifax of hotel security??
KRAPO: Are you suggesting there's something wrong with an American citizen carrying his arsenal of 20 guns around with him? Is that not his constitutional right?
Quote:No, but that's not what WISHY wrote. What she posted was that ALL MEN ARE VIOLENT. And she posted it more than once. Learn to read, willya?
SIGNY: WISHY, if you insist that "men" are more violent than "women"
KRAPO: Just skimming through this thread, but is the idea that men are statistically more violent than women supposed to be controversial?
Quote:You're confusing intelligence with ethics. Violence is one tool in the toolkit of manipulating your environment. Those who are willing to, and who know how to employ violence have more options than others. For example, some sociopaths are scary smart, scary effective, and also just plain scary.
SIGNY: then you're opening yourself up to the argument that "men" are also SMARTER than women because of their sex.
KRAPO: More 'violent' and more 'intelligent' - to me that sounds contradictory.
Quote:True. But however measured, male IQ definitely has a different distribution than female: higher standard deviation, and skewed somewhat more towards visualization.
SIGNY: Yes, men on the average have a slightly higher IQ than women
KRAPO: There are many different types of intelligence, IQ is the male scientists' who invented it idea of intelligence. Naturally it skews towards male brains, one could argue.
Quote:Isn't that what I said? "Statistics do indeed tell us something about the associations of one thing to another" There are two problems with the way people use statistics, though, which I'm sure you're aware of: (1) Statistics don't tell us about causality. For example, stats tell us that blacks are more interpersonally violent than whites. However, unless you've also gathered data on education, unemployment, exposure to lead, family structure etc. you might be tempted to follow the stats to say that being black is the CAUSE of interpersonal violence. When two things are correlated, it could be that A causes B, B causes A, A and B are caused by C, or coincidence. (2) People don't understand that populations have a distribution. They assume that all members of a population are like the average.
SIGNY: Instead of dealing with people categorically, maybe we should assess them individually?
KRAPO: I think we can all agree that it's bad to stereotype. Can we not also agree that statistics can teach us profound things about ourselves and our societies - things that, maybe, we ought to confront? Being able to mentally hold both of these truths at once is the key to grown up debate.
I hope that puts your misunderstandings, and your trolling, to rest.

Mass Killings: An Evolutionary Perspective
Some aspects of mass killings are clearer—especially those by older men.

ry-perspective
Male humans swim in worlds of status like trout swim in complex currents of water. Anyone who is not aware of this (or in denial about it) finds things like the high rates of male suicide or the fact that males are massively over-represented in apparently senseless crimes, utterly baffling. (2) Glib talk of “toxic masculinity” barely scratches the surface of what is going on. (3) “Toxic” does not explain the half of it, and it is worth noting that even the most toxic of masculinity does not put off all possible sexual partners. As Ogas and Gaddam (2012) note “It turns out that killing people is an effective way to elicit the attention of many women: virtually every serial killer, including Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, and David Berkowitz, has received love letters from large numbers of female fans” (p. 98). (4)
Remember — we have done the genetic analysis and most males (60 percent) do not reproduce. Status is exquisitely linked to male reproductive success, and males who were blind to its ups and downs have simply not had descendants. Call it “face”; call it “honor”; call it “status” or call it “prestige”. We are all descended from men who cared about it. (5)
We might have tamed it somewhat in modern society. We give it useful outlets. Sport. Awards at work. Elaborate rituals where we show that a person has so much status to spare, that they can even survive being roasted by professional comedians. Sometimes, in some individuals, and for reasons that we still do not understand, this pressure to value status can go very badly awry.
This has happened across time and space. There is even a Malay word, “Amok” which has passed into the language as “running amok”. Young (usually) Malay men would, for reasons unknown, attack innocent bystanders, usually with knives, sometimes with grenades. We used to think that this was what was called a “culture bound syndrome”, but we know better now. Indeed, “amok” has been dropped from the current DSM-5. Instead, we have “rampage” or “spree” killers. For simplicity sake I shall group all these together as “mass” killings — where five or more people, often unknown to the perpetrator, are killed — sometimes in multiple locations. (6)
Data Gathering
We carried out an archival study of seventy mass killers going back nearly a hundred years. Our methodology was highly conservative. We relied on only using archival accounts where we could double (or triple) up on the independent corroboration of details. Media tends to get highly speculative (and often political) about these events, and we did not want to get taken down any garden paths. In addition, we restricted the search to North America—for a couple of interesting reasons.

*****
Ok, here's the problem as I see it:
There really is interpersonal prejudice. Prejudice against women, against people of color, against short men with glasses. Against the disabled, against old people, against people with mental disabilities. SOME white males are willing and able to enforce this prejudice through violence and keep the system going. And because you feel it in your day-to-day, it's what you focus on. It's not right and it's not fair; and it causes our economy to run poorly when people can't express their best talents but get forced into roles they perhaps do less well. Because if you would not have been hindered from developing your talents, who knows what you might have achieved? Heck, you might have become an out-of-work CNC operator! Or a woodworker making custom furniture for a nonexistent customer base! Or - much less probably- perhaps even a successful architect.
But who said this was a meritocracy anyway?
***
Edited to add
ONE OF THE THINGS I FIND DISGUSTING ABOUT YOU, WISHY, IS THAT ALL YOU DO IS WHINE ABOUT YOUR LOT IN LIFE. You have ZERO empathy for other people, for the sacrifices they may have had to make to achieve their success, NO appreciation of the role of luck in success, and NO insight at all into what it takes to be a success. Is is possible that what's holding YOU back is a medical condition? One which prevents you from committing the time and energy it takes to be a star in your career path?
YOU REALLY NEED TO THINK ABOUT WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DONE TO ACHIEVE WHATEVER SUCCESS THEY WERE ALLOWED BY TPTB, AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF WHETHER YOU WERE WILLING OR ABLE TO MAKE THOSE KINDS OF SACRIFICES.
Me? NOT SO MUCH. I COULD have gone to medical school, but I just couldn't stomach the thought of eight more years of training! I COULD have advanced into upper management, but I just couldn't put in 60-hour weeks. I COULD have become a computer phenom like hubby, but I just wasn't ready to study ten hours a day. I candidly allow that I could have done more and been more, if I had made different choices.
I also freely allow that there are people with better mental and physical capabilities than me. I'm not as quick, or as strong, or as tall, or as smart, as some. There's nothing I can do about that. But I'm old enough and hopefully wise enough not to spend the rest of my life bitching about what I was born with. There are people much worse off .... our daughter, for instance.
******
There is a greater prejudice at work, the one which allows some people to garner huge rewards for (in essence) parasitism and theft. It's the one that consigns 99.9% of the people to making shit wages, and 99.9999% to powerlessness, and cause the VAST MAJORITY OF INEQUALITY IN THE USA. But because the wealthy are pretty good at hiding out from the rest of us, minimizing their wealth and power from public perception, it doesn't get shoved in our faces every day, and consequently we lose focus in the GREATEST source of inequity in our lives. OR we somehow feel that they have "earned" their status, and they we could, too, if only we applied ourselves like the 0.0001%.
So, with the agreement that prejudice should be eliminated whenever possible .... and I would start out with "blinded" applications for everything under the sun ... can we make that NOT our burning issue, but focus instead on the numerically more important inequities in our society? Specifically, the one that rewards thievery and punishes working for a living?

Most women don't automatically scan a room of people when they first enter to estimate who can "take on" whom and win. This is a mostly male perspective. I don't know how common it is among men, but it's only been expressed to me by men.
I honestly think that mass killings are almost alway triggered by a failed development of some other part of the brain. Maybe the killers are sociopaths, or maybe the killer is schizophrenic, and the "limiter" on behavior simply never developed. So rather than a particular behavior being over-expressed, perhaps the problem is in some OTHER area of the brain. The brain IMHO is a complex ecology of parts, and it's probably a failure elsewhere that causes this behavior to be over-expressed.

The younger group of mass murderer males (average age 23) tended to have been in trouble with the law, they were more likely to have had mental illness. In other words — at the age where young men are acquiring status, and the skills and abilities that will enable them to do so — they were, in fact, acquiring signs that they were on a fast track to reproductive oblivion. In ancestral times — times without highly trained and equipped SWAT teams — a “Hail Mary” attempt to attract female attention and make ‘them’ take you seriously might (just might) have worked. Follow-up work we are doing suggests that many of this type do attract a significant amount of female attention when in prison. (7)
The older group of mass murderer males (average age 41) were much more likely to be married, and maybe have families. They were less likely to have had prior signs of legal issues or of mental illness. But a peek into their personal details (so far as we were able) revealed that they had a pattern of recent status loss — or threat of same. A job. A relationship. Custody battles. A looming scandal. These older guys were not so much trying to acquire status, their actions looked more like a highly pathological attempt to not lose it. No more rational than the desperate “If I cannot have you then no-one can” actions of a jealous murderer, the role of status possibly sheds some light on their final act.

I knew I recognized the name of Stephen Paddock.
He was the DOD Auditor at Morton Thiokol from 1985-1988
when the Challenger disaster occurred in 1986.
Paddock as DOD Auditor was the SOB that was supposed to be auditing that DOD Protocols were in compliance before approving Invoices.
In other words, Paddock should have certified there existed the proper storage space, Class A clean lab and that low temperature facility was being used or contracted. None of this was done by Paddock in retrospect. In other words,
it appears this man was a possible plant to sabotage the Thiokol Space Shuttle program which resulted in Lockheed Martin picking up all the prime aerospace contracts. This happened 32 years ago. Who placed Paddock as the DOD Auditor and which Thiokol Execs interfaced with Paddock?
Did Paddock also purchase guns from any Utah gun store during late 1980s? Probably all the relevant documentation was mislabeled or hit the Deep Six and cannot be recovered.
Paddock owned two planes, multiple rental properties, lived in 27 different locations, bought weapons that could be converted to full auto for decades and visited numerous large cities.
The old CIA business model says they hired “disgruntled” IRS employees, who had a foreign wife to launder funds overseas, operate from multiple locations, hired to setup sting ops originally for drug buys and later auto gun sales.
One FBI stated that Paddock was a CIA operative for sting operations acting as the high roller gun sales.
His wife was CIA from 1999. One of his planes with N5343 tracks back and co-owned by a CIA contractor in Roanoke, VA.
Paddock did not become a millionaire in “real estate”, these were payoffs or kickbacks from some Gov Agency.
You cannot wire $100K to any foreign bank without it being traced - nothing said or done in her case. ISIL may
have been the buyer for guns and explosives found in room. They may have killed Paddock and turned the guns on the Concert which is why they are taking credit. Numerous videos show multiple shooters. Gov story was
almost immediately a “single shooter” and nothing more to see here-move on.
The whole Gov story is falling apart.
Who the hell is Stephen Paddock really? Far more than what the Public is being told.
LV was a total screw up as a sting operation by somebody.
or just a tinfoil headed conspiracy

LOL
I admit my issues and my flaws.
I've done exceedingly well in some areas and not so great in other areas.
I don't look at my life and say "poor me. I'm so victimized." on a daily basis and blame my problems on other people.
OONJ gives me a potential out in the other thread, basically telling me that there are genetic identifiers that could likely have picked up right after I was born that I would have a lot of these issues. You are the type of person who would glom on to this data and use it as an excuse for your behavior and your position in life. I, on the other hand, take full responsibility for my actions.
I'm trying to make life better for myself. I'm trying to live without anger and hatered. I don't hold on to that anger anymore.
A year ago, deep in my alcoholism, I probably would have been very angry at you for all of the terrible stuff you say about me here on a nearly daily basis.
I just feel nothing but pity for you now. Pretty much everybody here sees what is going on.
You have some severe mental and emotional issues, and I feel that you're doing nothing to even attempt ridding yourself of them because you have yet to admit that you even have a problem.
I really do hope the best for you.

SECOND: Your article is bullshit. "Evolution" isn't propelled by only one trait.
Here's how I see it: Females reproduction is, for mammals, the rate-limiting step. Males can scatter their sperm here, there, and elsewhere, but unless those offspring actually reach reproductive age themselves, it's a "legacy" dead end.
Since human babies are helpless for such long periods of time relative to other mammals ... not even able to walk for the first year but needing to be hand-carried fer chrissake, and only primitively self-sufficient MAYBE at the age of ten, it takes far more effort than can be supplied by one human (mom) to raise at least two children up to reproductive age.
Birds share a similar problem (demanding young) and have solved the problem by devoting BOTH parents to raising the young. The male's ongoing contribution to the youngsters is critical to species survival. Similar situation among humans ... it takes ... well, maybe not a village, but a tribe, or at least an extended family, to raise a child.
So from the offspring's side, cooperation is built into the human genome, because without it, we would not have survived as a species. (Please read "The Descent of Woman" https://www.amazon.com/Descent-Woman-Classic-Study-Evolution/dp/028562
7007 which makes this logic abundantly clear)
Now, from the MALE GENE standpoint, he will be the most reproductively successful if he rapes a huge number of women who live in (other) viable societies. HE spreads his genes far and wide, but doesn't have to expend any energy raising the young .... that's left for other men and women to do for him. Which explains why 1 in 200 men are direct descendants of Genghis Khan. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/gnxp/2010/08/1-in-200-men-direct-des
cendants-of-genghis-khan/
But that reproductive success depends on a number of social factors: The presence of many other viable societies which can be (in effect) parasitized, and the definition of "success" as being able to physically dominate women.
When you look at somebody like Stephen Paddock, he's the inverse of the successful reproducer. In fact, the most successful men of today either have no children or very few. It seems to me like the traits that are evolutionarily favored are disconnected from the traits of individual success (desire to stand out, willingness to tolerate risk, ability to find the nexus of social control for personal power). So I still come back to the idea that the problem with people like Paddock is that some controlling function in their brain just went haywire, and allowed dysfunctional behaviors to emerge.

Conspiracy about other shooters or operation Gladio B, where do all these conspiracy come from?
misinformation
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Las_Vegas_Strip_shooting
In the hours after the shooting, false information about the shooter's identity and motive went viral on social media. The fake news was circulated by political fringe websites and Internet forums such as 4chan. The right-wing website The Gateway Pundit misidentified the shooter, naming a different man and describing him as a registered Democrat. The 4chan thread on which this misinformation was based was briefly featured in the "Top Stories" section of a Google search for the man's name. The fake news website YourNewsWire spread false information about a second gunman shooting from the fourth floor of the hotel.[80] Two of Facebook's top trending pages were items from Sputnik, a Russian government news agency that has been described by Foreign Policy magazine and the Center for European Policy Analysis as being a "Russian propaganda" outlet. These included one story that falsely claimed the FBI had linked the shooter to a terrorist group. The stories were later removed with an apology. Stories linking the shooter to Antifa have also been discredited.
Google and Facebook were criticized for prominently displaying such false news stories in some of their search results. The two companies were said to have failed in their responsibility of keeping false stories from reaching the public. Facebook later said its algorithms were designed to detect and remove false stories, but failed to work adequately in this instance.

Investigators have examined Paddock’s politics, his finances, any possible radicalization and his social behavior — typical investigative avenues that have helped uncover the motive in past shootings.

I would assume that stricter gun laws have something to do with it.
Once again though, I find the headlines that the MSM use in their articles to be misleading and careless.
51% is a Majority, but most people don't think of a majority in those terms. When numbers aren't presented along with that word, most people tend to think of a majority as much closer to "all" than "half".
So unless you've got an underlying motivation other than enlightening people, to say that a majority of mass shootings is done by white males when the number is 54 to 63% depending on the source is not really a great title of an article. It's obviously politically motivated by identity politics of the left as another opportunity to paint white men in general as demons.
That's not even considering what we've already discussed that out of every white male that ever lived in America, something like 0.000000127% of them were mass murderers.
Even though the link you posted here finishes up with "Mostly True", I think the one of the two most important quotes in the article comes right before that verdict.
Quote:
Newsweek's claim is literally accurate. But it's worth noting the imprecision of this data, and the percentage of mass shootings by white men is lower than their share of the male population, according to Mother Jones.
The other one was about halfway through the article.
Quote:
We should note that some experts expressed concern that if the public debate around gun violence focuses too much on mass shootings, there’s a risk of overlooking the fact that gun murders disproportionately affect minorities, especially African-Americans.
Note that the direction of that statement is about how it negatively impacts minorities, especially African-Americans, while it doesn't clearly state that a disproportionate amount of gun murders are committed by minorities, especially African-Americans.
It's possible to lie when using the truth to do it. People need to stop letting the media manipulate them.
