btw Brenda, I'm from the northeast. In my last few years living up there, out of nowhere, I developed a strong phobia about slipping on ice. It made winters up there difficult.

I feel for ya Brenda. We've had an amazing winter here so far, but living around Chicago all of my life I know a thing or two about terrible winters.
About 7-8 winters ago me and my bro were living up in Wisconsin. New management came in and cut corners everywhere. Rather than have the normal plows come in and salt everything in a winter with very heavy snowfall, they used their own crew with tiny bobcats for some reason. At one point things melted and froze up right away before having a chance to drain off. The entire parking lot was literally an ice rink for about a week. I'm not even joking when I say that there was about an inch and a half of ice covering every square foot of the parking lot. And they did nothing about it!!!
My brother slipped and fell one morning and a neighbor yelled "GOOD!". Pissed off, my brother yelled "What!" back to him. He said "Good. You fell and I saw it. Let's sue these bastards!".
Fortunately we were still in our 20's back then and it wasn't a bad fall, so there was no lawsuit. If my brother fell like that today with his weight and older age, he could have been crippled by it.

I know that a lot of BC gets snow, but around Vancouver it's kind of a rarity, right? Kind of like Portland and Seattle?

Three weekends ago, we got what I believe to be the last big storm of the season. It rained, harder than I've seen in rain in years, and the swirling gusts were so strong they blew that rain into spray. My casual rain gage said 3.25" in one day and it may have overflowed, so possibly it was more than that. For the first time, the swale in my front yard filled up.
It seemed like a mighty generous rain year, and compared to the previous years it was. But south of (roughly) Point Conception, the "overage" was only five inches or so ... hardly enough to overcome the three FEET of deficit accumulated in the past five years. Surface-water-wise, we're doing great. Groundwater-wise, not so much.
Still I can't believe how GREEN everything looks! The hills are cloaked with green. Lupines - ever shy to sprout unless there are several weeks of near-continuous wetness- may bloom again this year. Maybe this year we'll get a blizzard of painted-lady butterflies again. There are two places I hope to visit once I get past the busy-ness of the next few weeks: Turnbull Canyon Road, and Rancho Santa Ana. I'm looking forward to it!

I almost had a heart attack just now...
2:30 in the morning and I went down in my basement to roll a cigarette and on the cold tile floor my socks were sopping wet! I thought my sump pump died again and I was going to have to wait 4 hours until the Menards opened so I could buy a new one and thoughts of my previous two nightmares of swapping out sump pumps in the crawl space in a foot of freezing water hit me in the face.
Turns out it was just about a gallon worth of water that seeped in from the outside. I still haven't had gutters installed and we got slammed with the hardest rain I've seen in 5 years last night. It's a wonder the power didn't go out in those thunder storms.
Crisis averted... My sump pump even did me the solid of kicking off while I was down there, just to let me know it was still doing its job

Right now we're in "roller coaster" weather - up 25 degrees, down 25 degrees over the course of 5 days.
I think our "rainy season" has come to an end, with maybe 4 or 5 extra inches of water so far. Enough to make the farmers, plants, and animals (fish, too!) happy.
Except that poor parking lot tree: I think it's dead. Or almost dead. The 8 -10 gallons a week that I would water it with was probably just enough to keep it green, but not enough for it to store sufficient sap in its roots for springtime budding. All of the other Callary/ Bradford pears have flowered by now ... I was hoping this tree was just getting a late start but I took a real close look at the branch tips this past weekend and noticed that there were very few viable buds.
I'm sorry, tree. What I didn't wasn't enough.

Gotta figure out when the best time to re-seed my grass is. Something nasty got a hold of my backyard toward the end of last summer and about 20% of it is barren now. It wasn't moles... I've had those before. My dad's had grubs before and he said it wasn't grubs. My backyard is my little sanctuary and it kills me how bad it looks right now. Still too great a chance of it getting too cold at night to try seeding it yet though.

Well, it's a good thing that nobody knows exactly where I live because I'm about to confess to acts of guerrilla gardening!
I had a bunch of old leftover poppy and lupine seeds that I didn't know what to do with, so while driving slowly on the right-hand lane of some nearby freeways I just threw the seeds out the window.
I was very pleased to see a patch of poppies growing where I don't think poppies have ever grown before, and a stand of lupines where I KNOW lupines never grew before.

Meanwhile, my very own, large self-planted coast live oak was looking worse and worse over the last few years. Last summer I looked up and realized I could see sky through the canopy. I've never been able to do that before. And the leaves and twigs were drooping down. And though you aren't supposed to water live oaks in their dormant season - hot summer weather - I felt I had no choice or I was going to lose it.
Then the rains induced a lot of new growth this year. The canopy is full again. And this year the tree was loaded with catkins, a new sight! Looking around at all the other coast lives oaks in the area and surrounding towns, I see they too are undergoing a revival.
But I learned my lesson. When fall comes I'm going to start watering, just in case it's not going to be a good winter for rain.

Boy, I have to say this has not been one of my best months ever. Just way too many things to deal with ... If it isn't one thing it's another. I don't think next month will be better because there are still too many loose ends to nail down, plus MORE things to nail down. Maybe the month after...
Sigh. I think I'm going to have a pity-party all to myself.
At times like these, I have to declare victory over little things, like having a nesting pair of scrub jays finally take residence in our neighborhood (they like the peanuts I toss out 2X/week!) and seeing some pretty flowers bloom in new places.
Plus I have a bouquet on the table of purple/pinkish statice and yellow freesia

I'm still waiting for some of my grass seeds to start sprouting. We've got a ridiculous amount of rain in the last 10 days but only about half a day of sunlight. The birds were out there having a feeding frenzy in my back yard about a week ago, so I hope there was still some grass seeds left that take hold.

I raked them in best I could, but I didn't have the proper tools for sure. Not a whole lot you can do with a plastic rake, and any of my power tools would have been overkill.

There we were comfortably watching TV. I was also checking our bank account online when all of the sudden - blackness. Things flickered momentarily on before going out again. This happens in our (comfortably well-off) neighborhood A LOT, and for no reason that WE can see: no earthquake, no storm, no strong winds ... I mean, WTH??? You'd think SCE could keep the electricity on! Hubby's typical comment is Welcome to the Third World.
Usually juice comes back on after a minute or two - but not this time! Fortunately we have enough flashlights and emergency lights, and have an UPS which powers our modem which allows us to make a phone call out to SCE. It was a "widespread outage" and they were "analyzing the problem" but was expected to be fixed in an hour. IF it had gone on longer I would have run down to the store for dry ice for the frig and freezer.
Heh. I know what the problem is: Equipment that hasn't been replaced in 65 years!

Well, on a happier topic:
The blooms are profligate this spring. Some of the early-spring blooms (camellias, gooseberries and currants) are still hanging on, while the mid-spring blooms (roses, ceanothus, CA poppies of all colors- pink, gold, pale butter-white, burnt orange and red - are having their own super-bloom in my front yard. Spanish lavender is also blooming like crazy. The later-spring flowers are just beginning - royal penstemon, suncups, cosmos. With so many blossoms in my front yard, it looks a little like the Crazy Lady yard ... yanno, the woman plants flowers of every colors without regard to design. But most of these are there as fill-ins for when the larger, more-restrained trees, shrubs, grasses, and succulents fill in. It's a work-in-progress. In the meantime, I'm happy for blossoms and for all of the bees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and (eventually) the seed-eating birds.
Thanks to the natural and supplemented food, I see so many more birds in my yard than before- scrub jays flitting quietly in for the peanuts, goldfinches, house finches, English sparrows, mourning doves, hummingbirds, black phoebes, and the occasional migratory interloper like yellow warblers and white-crested finches.

They are tiny, but their bites are mighty. NOTHING kills the itch - not topical/ oral benadryl, not cortisone cream, not alcohol, not any of the hundred home remedies that have been suggested to me .... although lidocaine cream helps. I have so many weeping, crusty lesions in various stages that I look like I have some terrible skin disease.

We've been seeing her in the neighborhood for a week or so and bedding down in our leaf-pile, but I thought she was "somebody's" dog until I saw her trying to climb our avocado tree to get avocados and realized that she was starving.
So I started feeding her, and she adopted our yard, and then I let her into the breezeway at night to keep her safe from coyotes and she adopted our house, and now she sticks to me like glue.
Today I had her checked for microchips (none), examined (2 y/o or less unspayed female in great health) and given shots (rabies, parvo, kennel cough, distemper) and treated for fleas and worms - all for $20! - and now she can come into the house without her little parasite friends.
I'll probably keep her for a week or two and see if she will socialize with the rest of the family, but if it doesn't work out for us (DD really doesn't like the dog!) then I will give her to a no-kill shelter with all of her papers.

I have as many meds for my allergies, but they're very different kinds.
Active rain clears outdoor air pretty well. (I can tell by how my allergies are doing, plus we see it in our particulate matter measurements.) But when it stops - oy vey. Then everything blooms - trees, grasses, molds ... and it all just freely floats away on the faintest breeze.
I don't know about you, but for me, just trying to get enough air can be hell.

Crazy, crazy weather here. For a week it was windy. That's not unusual for places OTHER THAN SoCal, and not unheard-of in the canyons and passes (where winds funnel down from the high desert thru the mountains to the coastal lowlands) but here, in the flatlands, anything over 20 mph is unusual and a week of wind is unheard-of. Every day that I came home from work there were new palm fronds and pine boughs on the ground.
Then, it got hot. Not springtime hot but midsummer hot - 90+ for a week. And Saturday, we had an amazing thunderstorm. We were out playing tennis and keeping a eye on the clouds ... we could see one storm band coming at us but fortunately it slid sideways and passed us to the west. We were just finishing up when another storm band headed right our way, and once dear daughter got zapped by her racket we decided to pack up. On the way home from the courts we got LIGHTNING! And THUNDER! and BIG RAIN DROPS! And even BIGGER RAIN DROPS! And then all hell broke loose - the hail went from small to pea-sized and the clouds unzipped and just dumped water on us while the lightning flashed and thunder rumbled. Even a Buffalonian would have noticed. It was a furious storm, but very brief - fifteen minutes, maybe. In two hours, the sun was shining and the birds were singing their evening songs. Sunday was pretty chilly - for here- but Monday was the weather we dream of here: mid-70s, clear, breezy, and blessedly refreshed by the rain.

However, the thunder scared the crap out of the dog - literally- and unbeknownst to us she left a steamy pile on the doorstep, which got tracked a bit into the laundry area. Cleanup on aisle two! We are still trying to figure this dog out. She's extremely attentive to disapproval, but I felt we just weren't clicking with her previous training because she wasn't entirely housebroken and we were trying to figure out how to accomplish that. In desperation I decided to try "crate training" her first .... and it appears that she's already been crate trained, which is a missing part of the puzzle, I think. She LOVES being in her carrier. This will make (re?)housetraining so much easier.
We're thinking of calling her either Pogo (She has so much energy she literally bounces all four feet off the ground when she plays) or Zippy (She's really, really fast.) Which one would you pick?

I was just out de-weeding the hasta area in front of my house and BIIIIG problem with my sump/drainage system......
Looks like the water is getting out of the house, but right outside there must be a huge crack in the pipe. There was about a 1'x1'x1' hole next to the foundation and I thought "GREAT. WTF dug that out????!!!". Just then the sump system came on and water started filling the GD hole.
That amount of erosion doesn't happen overnight, so it's probably been doing it since winter started and is probably why the seal busted and I had all of those problems inside back in December.
Here's hoping that it's an easy fix and I don't have a nightmare on my hands.

It sometimes goes by the name of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) and while some doctors don't believe it exists, hubby had it so bad that he was treated surgically - by a major university hospital - which trimmed his turbinates, straightened his septum, removed his uvula and scarred his soft palate (The scar formation caused his soft palate to lift). He used to have severe sleep apnea, but no more! Plus he was getting allergy shots.
Anyway. should your allergies cause you more symptoms, there are options besides surgery. There is a steroid NASAL spray which is a powder, here called Qnasl, which penetrates better and farther than any liquid-mist spray, which could be very useful.

Hi Sig. My brother is an asthma sufferer so I know how bad my allergies have a possibility of getting. Hence why I am so diligent in treating them when they get bad.

Still doing roller-coaster weather. Three days ago it was warmer in Bufflao (83) than here (69). Today it was 94. By Thursday it's anticipated to drop almost 30 degrees.
But with last week's thunderstorm and downpour, the flowers are still blossoming extravagantly. I love to see the activity in my front and back yards: The first flush of cosmos flowers have set seed, and the goldfinches and house finches are flocking to the seed heads to eat. Sparrows and mourning doves are feasting on the CA poppy seeds, the mockingbirds are eating the pineapple guava petals (edible and sweet), the butterflies and bees are nectaring on the nasturtiums, verbenas, and poppies ... the scrub jays are still coming in for the peanuts. Today I heard and saw a hawk up on the wire, and a woodpecker in our avocado.
We're finally reaching a modus vivendi with our new dog. I mentioned that we didn't understand how she was trained and ... as eager to please as she is ... she just didn't know what was expected. The biggest problem was that she was only partly house-trained; I think she must have been an apartment dog and actually been trained to use potty-pads, which would have been terribly confusing for her. But - success! She now reliably does what she needs to do when I take her for a walk, and now that we know she won't pee in the house we can let her out of her carrier at night. We're ALL much happier!
She's a fun, attentive, playful, active little dog. Over time we've accumulated various toys so she can exercise her rat-terrier drives .... thrown/ rolled tennis balls to "chase" and "hunt", a knotted rag to "wrestle" and "kill", chew strips to gnaw on, and of course dirt to dig in. It's a pleasure seeing this little dog being happy just being a dog and doing dog-things.

I saw my first "yellow" bird the other day when I was on the phone with my Grandma. She said that it was a canary. Damn near 40 years old and never seen one in the wild before.
My grass in my back yard filled in about 80% with that one bag of grass seed. Thought it was done a few weeks ago but it just keeps sprouting. Maybe I'll get even more. Finger's crossed.
Still haven't looked into that cracked sump drain though. Man I'm worried about what I'm going to find when I uncover that.

Yeah... the foundation should be fine. No water is leaking into the house, and everything is built high enough on concrete so termites aren't going to be an issue. If the house was going to sink, it would have happened already after existing almost 60 years on a floodplain.
I get to learn a new skill. How to replace a section of old clay pipe with PVC without breaking it even more or having to hand dig about 300 feet out to the street and replacing the whole thing.

Well, the doings around here .. Zippy-dog is still zipping around. She has tremendous ratting instincts ...
We saw something over a couple of evenings that I didn't think lived around here because they don't climb well... a baby skunk. Fortunately I always walk Zippy on a leash, and skunks are very inoffensive unless you really, REALLY bother them.
Other than that ... we're in June gloom: morning clouds (marine layer) burning off by 11 AM- 3 PM. Probably the first normal June we've had in over a decade.
Have not had time to plant a vegetable garden this year, been way too busy with other stuff. But the flowers are still nice. I'm just a sucker for color. Some of the CA poppy seeds that I scattered kind of late were specialty colors. I guess because they went on the ground so late they bloomed late, but a few weeks ago I started seeing poppies that were so gorgeous, I've never seen anything like them before ... old rose/ reddish plum fading to white centers; very pale/ almost cream yellow with golden centers, and fuschia. The mourning doves are still having a field day with the poppy seeds, the goldfinches are still stripping the cosmos seeds, the bees are happy with pretty all of the flowers.

I've been fiddling around with a vegetable lasagna. I tried to reproduce the kind that you can buy frozen, and failed ignominiously- twice! But although this isn't like the commercial frozen lasagna that inspired it, this is even better. So, here it is ...
VEGETABLE LASAGNA (serves four)
1 glass loaf pan
4 lasagna noodles, uncooked (break them if you need to fit them into a glass loaf pan)
1 lb ricotta
2 eggs
8 oz shredded mozzarella, divided in half
1 T sugar or Splenda
2 cups fresh spinach leaves, ribboned
1 1/2 cups fresh basil leaves, ribboned
1 medium red bell pepper, diced fine
1/2 jar Alfredo sauce
Parmesan cheese
Break noodles into pan-sized pieces, place 2 of them (uncooked) into the bottom of the pan.
Mix the ricotta, 2 eggs, 4 oz mozzarella, and sugar. Spread half of the ricotta mix onto the noodles. Sprinkle half of the red pepper on the ricotta mix, then sprinkle half of the spinach and half of the basil, then sprinkle on half of the remaining mozzarella (about 2 oz), a few good shakes of Parmesan, and drizzle about 1/4 of the jar of Alfredo sauce (I used Newman's Own).
Repeat the noodle, ricotta, red bell, spinach, basil, mozzarella, Parmesan and Alfredo sauce layering. Make sure that you have a good covering of cheese on top because it's supposed to "seal" the lasagna so the bell peppers etc cook thoroughly.
Bake at 300 F for 60-70 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the lasagna is cooked though.
This is THE BEST!!!!

Meanwhile here in SoCal ... we went from a somewhat-higher-than-average rainfall winter to a mild spring ... and immediately into furnace conditions.
We had one ten-day heat wave (temps near 100 where I live, and higher inland), a roughly 7-say reprieve, and now ANOTHER ten-day heat-wave.
There are only two pieces of good news, as far as I can tell ...
That parking lot tree. I spoke with one of the business owners where THAT TREE is located, and though it seems that the property owner/ manager has no intention of fixing the sprinkler system, at least one of the business owners knows that I'm doing and seems to be OK with it. Which is good because we've graduated to 14 gallons per week, and between that and the limbing-up that was done the tree looks much MUCH happier, and ...
Hubby finally agreed to put solar panels on the roof. This will be the last summer that we see hellacious electric bills because of our AC, which we really DO try to use sparingly!

As I mentioned here, and also in the Burn BC Burn thread, we got the solar panels up. They were installed a couple of months ago, and I was anxiously tracking our electric bill, as we had sized the system to meet our average use.
As luck would have it, they were connected in the last week of yet another hellacious heatwave (100+ temps for over a week) and although I really tried to be very sparing of our AC use, the bill was still around $130. Quelle desappointement!
But now that the weather is more normal, our bill is in the negative direction: we're producing slightly more than we're using. Hooray!
Our front yard is still pretty bare. It was gloriously colorful when the rain coaxed the CA poppies and cosmos into full bloom, but after a searing summer, I have to say it looks pretty drab. I still need to buy and plant many more plants. But what was gratifying was the reactions of the various solar installation crews when they saw the backyard: they literally stopped when they turned the corner and goggled a bit, and made some sort of comment about it being like a park. How nice!
I'm still feeding the small critters peanuts and seeds. I've seen three scrub jays at a time- so brightly colored! And of course squirrels, sparrows, phoebes, doves, mockingbirds, crows and ... a young Cooper's hawk. It's shown up twice now, hoping for a nice dinner of unwary bird, lizard, or squirrel. Fortunately, our dog keeps them all on high alert- being a terrier, she's an inveterate hunter. The squirrels and birds are too fast for her; all I can do keep the lizards and skinks safe is provide convenient rocks for them to hide under.
We're sliding into autumn; there is always at least one heatwave or two before November (We've had some pretty toasty Halloweens) but the nights are definitely cooler now, which is great.
For now, that's all the news that's fit to hear from Lake Woebegone.

My frig broke. OMG, what a nightmare, as I had JUST gone out grocery shopping and the frig and freezer were pretty full. The repair guy promised to show up on Friday ... the day that I discovered it was all warm, and I thought that was a pretty sweet deal. Too bad he pulled a no-call no-show. So I've been stuffing the frig/freezer with about $30 worth of dry ice and cooking everything in the frig. Then the repair guy said on Monday that it would take $980 and two weeks for a repair.
WHAT?
Not sure I believe him, but not about to wait ANOTHER couple of days for a "second opinion" because it's an old frig anyway. So I boogied out with hubby to the nearest Sears, got a great "going out of business" price in a frig, used my "10% off" coupon that the repair guy gave me, charged the frig on my Sears card to get free delivery, and am expecting the new beast tomorrow.
Still, I better go out and buy more dry ice! The last dish from this frig is Moroccan chicken tonight.

The Beast has arrived. An extra 10 CuFt! It JUST fit, but we couldn't fit a cigarette paper between the countertops on either side and the frig! Hubby had a hammer and chisel at hand, ready to chop off the bullnose edging just in case, but the installer managed to squeak it in!
Since 99+% of our meals are prepared at home, mostly from scratch, our old frig used to be really stuffed after each weekly shopping, and really empty at the end of the week, so I think we'll have just enough room to use but not enough room to waste.

Strong Santa Ana winds (40-55 mph gusts) are propelling fires here in SoCal. The one closest to me is still far away, but ... selfishly ... the first thing I thought of was that the evacuation zone is only a mile (or less) away from my favorite CA-native nursery Theodore Payne. I have a gift card from my co-workers, which I got when I retired recently, but I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to spend it yet! From my extremely selfish POV, I hope the nursery survives.
Zero pct containment, winds to continue thru Friday afternoon. Thousands evacuated, hundreds of structures destroyed.
This is a "la Nina" year, which means cold water off the coast of CA. And unlike last year, where we still had a persistent remnant of The Blob of very warm water off the coast, which lofted a lot of moisture into the air and led to record rainfall in central and norther CA and at least normal rainfall in So Cal, this year the coastal water really IS la-Nina cold. Typically, that means colder drier weather, and so far it's been tru to form.

It's funny how a random phrase or a glimpse of something or a fragment of song can bring back memories. I'd forgotten that until you brought it up, but it brought back a pang of memory from when I was a child and life was simple.
I'm far away from the fire, and the wind is blowing the smoke away from us. Here. it's chilly at night but warming up during the day. I got a bunch of "Christmas" lima bean seeds from a neighbor; I don't know how well they grow in the winter but I planted them and they sprouted, so today I tied them up to their stakes. If all goes well, they'll take over from there and twine their way up.
Also, my saffron crocus is sprouting. This is my third try, so I guess three times' the charm!

Anybody here ever have an ant problem before?
They seemed to set up camp outside my house in early spring and have no migrated indoors for the winter. I've lived here 6 years and they were never a problem before the insane wet spring we had that turned my back yard into marshland for a few weeks.
There's quite a few solutions to this problem that you can buy at Home Depot, but I was wondering if anybody has ever used any of them before and has some advice.

I think they used to come in years ago ... not remembering.
Now the house is full of Pholcidae ... those small, slender, long-legged spiders.
I know: sounds really disgusting unless you find buggy creatures interesting.
The Pholcidae efficiently control flies, mosquitoes, anything that flies in here ...
and they usually control other spiders. One time, I did find a black widow in the
cupboard, had to remove her myself.
One friend referred to them as my pets; & I sometimes treat them that way.
Needless to say, when I have guests, they prefer to visit on the patio.

I get cha. My "basement" part of my tri-level home is the part that I haven't rehabbed yet. I'd really rather have a generac to make sure it shouldn't flood again before I put all that time and money into it. I've got a nice dirty crawl space down there too.
Until the ants came in, the only bugs I ever had in my house were spiders. Smaller unthreatening ones that are probably similar to the Pholcidae you've got, and larger somewhat terrifying looking ones called Wolf Spiders. (They're pretty fascinating, and pretty much harmless to humans).
I've always left them alone since they stayed in the basement where nobody ever goes and they seemed to be paying the rent until I fixed the place up and got the Orkin man to come around.
They've killed a TON of ants around the floor of the perimeter of the house though since late spring, and because of that they started multiplying andmigrating upward. So I've been killing ants and spiders now. It's a rather large problem I'm dealing with. I don't think a spray bottle of Raid is going to cut it for me unfortunately.
Anybody ever try those ant traps where the ants don't die right away and they carry the poison back to their colonies?

The ants we have around here are Argentinian imports, which are known for creating 'supercolonies'. iirc, a supercolony has taken over the Iberian peninsula.
Generally they get worse and worse as the year progresses starting out in spring, until winter rain (if we get any) drowns them out. But some of my coworkers have issues with rising soil water forcing ants into the home when it first starts to rain.
Ants are either 'protein eaters' or 'sugar eaters', in terms of what attracts them to bait, or so I've read. Argentinian ants are 'protein eaters', but it's hard to make bait out of protein. It's much easier to get rid of 'sugar eaters' because everything dissolves in water, and you can't separate the bait from the poison.
The poison in this case is ordinary boric acid dissolved in water, which, as the idea goes, the foragers take back to the colony with the bait, and eventually it kills the queen.
In any case, there are recipes online to make boric acid poison, and mix it with sugar water bait. Argentinian ants just laughed at it - and they ignored the bits of tuna that I mashed up with boric acid solution.
Long story to get to what didn't work, but if you have a different kind of ant, OR you find a way to do things better, you may have better luck.

It's hard to tell what my ants are, not being an expert in the field. They certainly do seem to like sugar though. I left a bowl of cereal out that I had eaten before bed the other night and when I woke up there were a hundred of them in the bowl!
I could leave a bowl that had chili in it out all night though and they won't touch it.
But, I've left out a TV dinner container and they were all about that. It was turkey/gravy with peas and mashed potatoes. (And god knows what else they put in those).
They're all really tiny black ants. I've never seen a large one in my house. Never seen any winged ones either. Just tiny black ones.... hundreds, probably thousands of them.

Selfishly happy to say that my favorite CA native nursery, Theodore Payne, http://theodorepayne.org/ was spared the ravages of wildfire. Even tho the flames came within about a half-mile, there was a ridge between the fire and the nursery and the winds were blowing in the right (or wrong, depending on where you were!) direction.

Aside from which, prolonged drought is killing the trees. Can you say WILDLAND FIRE? And, as I've learned from the news, "too urban to burn" is now a myth.
The graph below was last year. But since we've had no rain since June, they didn't update it. Generally, by this time of year we'd have around 4" already (blue trace). But we've had none, and there's none in sight.

Yeah... I thought about that after I posted. It's just typically not something anybody around me ever says... and now that my mom and stepdad moved down to Arizona it's something they playfully brag about now that they're living it. They had just come back up for a week and the tail end of their stay it snowed a bit and they couldn't wait to get back down to the warm dry air.
My mom kind of needs it with her MS. If it was just a matter of trying to get away from Illinois taxes they would have moved to Indiana and stayed close to family. She doesn't do well at all in the humidity up here though.

She's actually one of the "Lucky Ones", as far as MS goes.
My friend Kim's mom was in a motorized wheelchair for as long as I've known her. I guess my mom had it for about 10 years before she was diagnosed. Finally figured it out when she lost sensation in her legs and fell down the stairs about 12 or so years back. At least she had really good health insurance back then and they put her on some experimental shots that would have cost $50k/yr without the insurance. She's actually in "remission" now, but she doesn't get around all that great. At least she's still walking though all these years later. Only rarely does she ever need a cane. :)
It kind of sucks they're so far away since my relationship with my Mom and Step-Dad is probably better now than it ever was, even when I was a young teenager. But I'm happy she doesn't have to deal with the humidity up here, and it's also good knowing she won't be slipping on any ice either.
They showed me pics of the mountain range view they get right out of their back door. I've never seen a mountain in real life before. Looks pretty amazing.
The job is actually going pretty well. Sure, I wish it paid more and there were benefits, but it pays the bills for now and it's getting me out of my house and I don't feel at all agorophobic anymore. I'm actually getting some of my assertiveness back as well, which is a nice feeling. 2 weeks ago I got them to give me Christmas off. Everyone gets Christmas Eve off, but since I don't have kids and my mom and step dad moved away that means nothing to me. Christmas night we always get together at my Dad's house and all 4 of my brothers will be there. I haven't seen the ones that live in Baltimore or L.A. since last Christmas. They know I bust my ass there and show up 15-20 minutes early everyday, so they accommodated me.
Just tonight I had to tell them that I could only work one of the days this weekend that they added to my schedule without asking me too. I already volunteered a few months ago to give my disabled brother a place to crash most of the days he's in town, and had the schedule all worked out with my other brother until they did that. He's the one who's alcoholism was 10 times as destructive as my own, and most of the family doesn't want him staying at their place much or at all unfortunately. It's not that i don't trust him... he's been sober for 3 or so years now. It's just that I don't want him to have to walk on eggshells all day while I'm sleeping and then I'm gone all night. I don't get to see him much, and it will be cool that he's around for a week or so.
A few people have been fired since I started, and 3 others have given their notice. They're scrambling right now. One of them was the team lead of the overnights. I'm thinking there's a pretty good chance they might ask me if I want it. I figure if they make it worth my while I'll take it. Finger's crossed.

Yesterday was cloudy and cold, but no predicted rain. But on the tail end of the disturbance that made the weather so threatening, we had a small rain band come thru. Went in the store to do grocery shopping and when I got out again there was water running in the street gutters, puddles on the sidewalk, and my (leaking) windshield had leaked- which it only does with wind-driven rain.
So, there it was: an unexpected reprieve of much-needed water from the sky. Although the official rainfall was 0.01" (at the airport) I estimate that we got 0.1". It doesn't sound like much, but when you haven't seen rain for over 10 months, it's a lot!
I had JUST sown a bunch of CA poppy and cosmos seeds and watered the property twice; so this additional water will give all the seeds a great start- I hope! In a few months, I should have a yard-full of pink, white, purple, orange, butter-yellow, and rose-colored flowers.
KIKI, if you see this .... we live in the flatlands, and you live nearer the foothills I believe. If anyone gets rain, it should be you. Did you get any?

Man... that sucks Brenda. I thought I was the only one that did that to myself. Even with the low temps, my last elec/gas bill was about $140, but that was all before the cold hit. I think my ancient furnace is going off 2-3 times as much now, so my next bill should be well over $200 bucks. It sucks getting that $400-500 2 week paycheck only to piss half of it away on the heat when it's so freaking cold in the house.... but at least I'm making money to pay it this year instead of just draining what's left of my savings.
My car made it home tonight.... I think I'm going to buy a burner phone in case of emergencies. The tires aren't great, it doesn't start so well in this cold, and I'm dumping a quart of oil every 60 miles or so.
I don't want to pay some mechanic to rape me on it, so I'm gambling and just putting oil in it for now until it warms up and I can watch some youtube videos and fix it myself.

My blood sure has thinned! We didn't turn the heat on until a week ago, and I thought it was COLD ... but it was still 55 deg F in the house. I can't imagine how I'd do in really cold weather anymore. I used to love snow ... I'd prolly hate it now.
This time it looks like the midwest got the "polar vortex". Thanks to global climate shift, the jet stream is taking bigger loops south and bigger loops north, dragging arctic air farther south and warm air farther north, and staying remarkably persistent .... for weeks and weeks at a time, instead of precessing from west to east over the course of a week or so, like it used to. That's why we've had record highs over the past few days, and you're having record lows.
It looks like a change in the weather is coming in a week or so for you SIX. I wish it were better news for everyone: it's really hard to sleep well when you're cold.

Our snow isn't going to melt at all for the foreseeable future. :(
My car started fine today though, even though it wasn't any warmer. I just went out at lunch time and ran it for about 10-15 minutes and it seems like that did the trick.
I LOVE coming home and it's freaking freezing though. I'm actually pretty happy about the work situation right now. Even though I'm part time, they aren't scheduling me like I am. Got 4 days this week and next week and my first 5 day week after that. I don't mind working so much when it's a hell of a lot warmer in the store than in my home.
It'll be known at my 90 day evaluation that this isn't going to fly with me though. If they want me full time, they've got to pay the price. If they don't, that's fine with me too. I only signed up for 20-25 hours a week, and at this pay rate that's all I'm willing to work for them 3/4 of the year.

Yeah... I can make more money on my own during the warm months now that I'm not drinking, and even during the cold months I'm working on a project that I believe will be able to make me quite a bit through crowd funding once a few key pieces of phase one is complete. I can't do much on it when they've got me on 5 days though. That's not something they're regularly going to do though since there are limits to how many hours they can work a part timer on average in any 12 week stretch.
I'm okay with working as many as they'll give me at the moment though.

I can empathize. I only have two modes myself 100mph or 0. It's easy enough to blame it on alcohol, but I think that was only the symptom. I'm not saying that I'm not an alcoholic, but it was sure easy to stop when I finally put my mind to it. I practically live on coffee now in place of it.
I said about 7 years ago that this project was something I would never work on again because it consumed my life. That's not hyperbole. I put a good 5 of my prime years into it, and it was only a hobby thing back then.
I've learned to embrace it though. I really enjoy working on it. In hindsight, when I've seen the depths that I can go to when I'm not keeping myself busy I think I'm better off with it in my life. I just need to learn to have some sort of balance in my life.
I hope you can do the same and get that book published. :)

I know that I'm better on it. The entire time I worked both of my really good jobs I was using practically every day. All I ever do is a few hits a day after work when I use it. Currently I'm not messing with it at all until the laws change. I'm still holding out hope that I luck into a semi-decent job and I don't want to have to worry about passing the drug test.
Do what you need to, to get back into doing what you love doing. If you're anything like me at all then idle hands truly are the devil's playground. Quitting drinking was huge, but it still took about 6 months for me to really get the ball rolling in my life again. Spending all of that time at my parents house helping them move and get ready for the move really helped out a lot. I really didn't want to get a job until after the winter with my car, but I decided stop making excuses and to strike while the iron was hot. My agoraphobia and social anxiety was at bay and I didn't want to risk slipping back into that before working my first job in 2 1/2 years.
I just checked my schedule today and it changed again... lol. They've got me working 5 nights a week this week and the next two weeks. My manager told me that when the listing for the recently vacated team lead position is posted he'll let me know. He's got to work 7 nights a week until he gets that filled. I'm considering it, but not very heavily right now. Not only would it need to pay at least $4/hr more than what I currently make for me to obligate myself to 5-6 nights a week, but I'd have to be confident that it was a stepping stone to some real money sometime in the relatively near future too. I wouldn't be happy working 5-6 nights a week for that for very long. Otherwise, I'm completely copacetic working 2-3 nights a week at what I make until I find something better, or hopefully that project that I'm working on really takes off. :)
Sorry that you didn't have any kids and it's a sore spot for you. You probably read about my history on that, but I'm over it at this point. Near-40-year-old me is happy not having any real obligations or full-time relationships. Sorry about the passing of those close to you too. I'm glad you're finding ways to cope.

Since I don't drink anymore and don't want to be around everyone doing it, so I think I'm going to take my first night off in a while and just work on my project. I get it. Nobody would ever convince me that getting on pharmaceuticals would be a good thing either. All I can say is that it is not addictive. Really, you wouldn't smoke all that much if you did. When I do smoke, it's probably about the amount of 1 or 2 cigarettes worth a day, maximum. I would only suggest that if you ever do try it to just use a little hitter bat and take a single tiny puff and see what it does for you. My first time my friends got me super high and I literally freaked out. It's strange in that you'll never get as high as you did that first time, and that's actually a good thing. I've never heard of a pot smoker trying to chase that first high.

We have lunch and coffee and talk. But that's about it for now. People I see at the senior's centre are okay for a couple of hours but then I reach my limit and that's okay by me.
Yeah... It's too bad that nobody I know really likes talking on the phone much. I actually like doing that. My grandma who died of cancer a few years back liked it. I miss her.

Yeah, sorry. Brain fart. I'd love to give you some advice, but I don't have a clue about laws in your area, let alone Canada. Here in the states it's very different from state to state. Rent is quite a bit higher in Illinois and Wisconsin than it is in Indiana, for instance, but they are required by law to provide you with heat "free" of charge. You're on your own in Indiana. I prefer it that way, personally. If I was renting, I'd have the heat down really low and pocket that extra cash. When I rented in Illinois and Wisconsin I constantly had the heat up to 80 degrees just to try to get my money's worth.

Good luck if you go the step-kids route. Everything about my childhood was a blur of bad stuff after my parents got divorced. I know people who had a much better situation after an amicable divorce though. You'll definitely want to feel that out before rushing into anything you'll regret.

My brother would have been on a waiting list for decades if he stayed in the Chicagoland area, but he moved a couple hundred miles south and got into a beautiful apartment complex that is mostly for the elderly. I believe his monthly rent is somewhere around $200, with the heat included. You may want to talk to somebody and see what you're options are, if any. It wasn't an easy road to get my brother where he is now, in the S8 housing and on SSDI benefits, but after about 5 years he's being taken care of as he should be with his disabilities. I hate hearing how bad you have it. I wish I could do something to help.

When I get some time I'll see if there are any other options. KODI really is a beautiful thing, and the firestick is only 40 bucks. And, in rain-related news .... as in, not so far this year .... we're having the ever-receding rain forecast again this year. Highest-ever recorded heat waves (yanno, to match the polar vortex in the rest of the contiguous states!) along with no rain, and yet MORE no rain!
The rain goddess ... such a tease. Like in the previous five-year record drought, there is rain in the forecast in the next three days ... nope, five days .... nope, it disappeared from the ten-day forecast. Then it reappears again in a week or two ... RAIN! A one-inch storm coming! Nope ... a half inch. Well, maybe a tenth. No, not coming at all.
As the storms approach, they thin out and evaporate. The Ridiculously Resilient Ridge looks like it's made a comeback.
I'm sure glad I ripped out my front lawn and most of the back lawn!

Well... that's an option, if you can find a store card at a walmart near you.
I wouldn't be too worried about screwing anything up. As far as I know, you can't screw something up so bad on the firestick that you brick it with any of the methods I've used. They have a pretty fail-safe "factory reset" feature that will let you start from scratch.
When I first started using KODI, it was pretty complex. You couldn't do it directly from the stick itself. Without going into techy stuff, you needed to have a PC, your network and the stick, and download a bunch of programs and run some pretty mundane commands.
These days, you can do everything with the remote that comes with it. As long as you can connect the firstick to the same network that your computer is that you use to post messages here at fff.net, you can get everything up and running.
Let me know if you do this and you get one. I'd be happy to reset mine, and use one of the current youtube tutorials first to make sure everything is working, and then send you the link.
Oh yeah, it's so easy to do now that you can watch a video to get it done. :)
The only "problem" with it, is that it currently doesn't auto-update, so on occasion you'd have to reinstall KODI. This would just require finding a new video with new instructions on how to do it. I've only had to do this a few times in about 4 years. It's been my experience that with each update they've also made the process easier to do as well. Hopefully one of these days they make the program auto-update so you don't even have to do that anymore.
If this happens, you can always just ask and I could help you out again.

Well... according to the forecasts ... should be raining here too, by next week. But I see that they're posting the "amazing disappearing rainstorm" again. Just yesterday, wunderground was predicting 1.4" of rain. Today, it's 0.9".

Well, with all this talk of rain, it looks like we're finally going to get some!
Rain forecast starting tomorrow, predicted to be about 1.5" total over two days. I dropped the downspouts to direct the water into the gardens, set out my "rain gage", and tossed some CA poppy seeds into the abandoned lot across the street.
All we'd need is ten more storms like this and we'll be OK.

Well, I brought in my little "rain gage" and took a measurement .... 2 - 15/16" ... hell, let's call it 3" of rain. Twice what the storm was predicted to produce. Wow. That's pretty damn good.
Altho I have to say ...it looks like 13 were killed in mudslides which occurred below the Thomas fire burn areas, which ultimately became the largest recorded fire in CA. Drought, fire, flood, mudslide, earthquake .... what's not to like about CA?
