I read over half of the article, tried to understand what it said,
finally gave up.
What I think it said, maybe:
A danger is reported, but it is not 100% certain to occur: It's uncertain.
Most people take UnCertain to mean UnLikely.
If I say, "There is a 84% chance that smog in Los Angeles will get
denser this year," Most would think, "Then it probably won't happen.
I can forget it."
OR -- to make it really simple for myself, Most people who read a
headline on scientific findings think it says the exact opposite of what
it does say.
And the rest of us know we have no idea what it says.
SO, I have an idea.
Never tell the People directly what the science paper said.
Instead, hire a Science Writer who is an expert in Keep It Simple Stupid!
Let him write up what it said. He can start with the above article
about why people don't know what the scientists really said.

It is simply ironic that an article that explains why the Public doesn't
get Global Warming is itself an article that's hard to understand.
In a way, it doubly illustrates the problem.
SO:
1. People don't want to believe in Climate Change, and who can blame them?
2. Denial of AGW in the media & government was & is very heavily funded.
3. Many of the scientists who know the truth are unable to communicate it.
In a rational world, the opposite would be true.

Cheap Climate Protection

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce just came out with its preemptive strike against Obama administration regulations on power plants. What the Chamber wanted to do was show that the economic impact of the regulations would be devastating. And I was eager to see how they had fudged the numbers.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the diatribe. The Chamber evidently made a decision that it wanted to preserve credibility, so it outsourced the analysis. And while it tries to spin the results, what it actually found was that dramatic action on greenhouse gases would have surprisingly small economic costs.
The Chamber’s supposed scare headline is that regulations would cost the US economy $50.2 billion per year in constant dollars between now and 2030. That’s for a plan to reduce GHG emissions 40 percent from their 2005 level, so it’s for real action.
So, is $50 billion a lot? Let’s look at the CBO’s long-term projections. These say that average annual US real GDP over the period 2014-2030 will be $21.5 trillion. So the Chamber is telling us that we can achieve major reductions in greenhouse gases at a cost of 0.2 percent of GDP. That’s cheap!
True, the chamber also says that the regulations would cost 224,000 jobs in an average year. That’s bad economics: US employment is determined by the interaction between macroeconomic policy and the underlying tradeoff between inflation and unemployment, and there’s no good reason to think that environmental protection would reduce the number of jobs (as opposed to real wages). But even at face value that’s also a small number in a country with 140 million workers.
So, I was ready to come down hard on the Chamber’s bad economics; but what they’ve actually just shown is that even when they’re paying for the study, the economics of climate protection look quite easy.

With a 40% reduction by 2030, U.S. emissions would be would be .954 billion tonnes - a .636 billion tonne per year reduction.
Meanwhile, China's carbon emissions are increasing by .145 billion tonnes a year (2011 to 2012 figures), so with no change on their part by 2030 they will be producing 2.32 billion tonnes more per year than they are today.
If you look at China's carbon reduction proposals, they are all based on emissions per capita or emissions relating to GDP, not actual reduction (or even much slowdown in increase) of the total amount of emissions.

The U.S., Japan, and most European countries have made strides in carbon reduction - some pretty substantial. However, China, India, and developing countries in Africa, Asia, and South America are increasing emissions at a pretty high rate. Check out Indonesia, Brazil, and South Africa, for example.
This is not to say that the U.S. shouldn't try to increase the use of renewable energy or reduce pollution, since those are useful both for local health and the economy, but it's going to take a worldwide effort to reduce total carbon emissions. One that I don't think we're going to get the developing world to buy into.

From 2000 to 2013 China produced 2.9 gigatons less carbon than previous estimates of its cumulative emissions. Earth got so hot last month that federal scientists struggled to find words, describing temperatures as "astronomical," ''staggering" and "strange." They warned that the climate may have moved into a new and hotter neighborhood.
This was not just another of the drumbeat of 10 straight broken monthly global heat records, triggered by a super El Nino and man-made global warming. February 2016 obliterated old marks by such a margin that it was the most above-normal month since meteorologists started keeping track in 1880, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
The old record was set just last December and the last three months have been the most above-normal months on record, said NOAA climate scientist Jessica Blunden. And it's not just NOAA. NASA, which uses different statistical techniques, as well as a University of Alabama Huntsville team and the private Remote Sensing System team, which measure using satellites, also said February 2016 had the biggest departure from normal on record.
NOAA said Earth averaged 56.08 degrees (13.38 degrees Celsius) in February, 2.18 degrees (1.21 degrees Celsius) above average, beating the old record for February set in 2015 by nearly six-tenths of a degree (one-third of a degree Celsius). These were figures that had federal scientists grasping for superlatives.
"The departures are what we would consider astronomical," Blunden said. "It's on land. It's in the oceans. It's in the upper atmosphere. It's in the lower atmosphere. The Arctic had record low sea ice."

"Everything everywhere is a record this month, except Antarctica," Blunden said. "It's insane."
In the Arctic, where sea ice reached a record low for February, land temperatures averaged 8 degrees above normal (4.5 degrees Celsius), Blunden said. That's after January, when Arctic land temperatures were 10.4 degrees above normal (5.8 degrees Celsius).
Worldwide, February 2016 was warmer than about 125 of the last 136 Marches.
It was also the warmest winter - December through February - on record, beating the previous year's record by more than half a degree (0.29 degrees Celsius).
Georgia Tech climate scientist Kim Cobb said she normally doesn't concern herself much with the new high temperature records that are broken regularly.
"However," she added in a Thursday email," when I look at the new February 2016 temperatures, I feel like I'm looking at something out of a sci-fi movie. In a way we are: it's like someone plucked a value off a graph from 2030 and stuck it on a graph of present temperatures. It is a portent of things to come, and it is sobering that such temperature extremes are already on our doorstep."
Scientists at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information in Asheville, North Carolina, were astonished by the "staggering" numbers, said Deke Arndt, the centers' global monitoring chief.
"Usually these are monthly reminders that things are changing," Arndt said. "The last six months have been more than a reminder, it's been like a punch in the nose."
NASA's chief climate scientist Gavin Schmidt usually discounts the importance of individual record hot months, but said this month was different, calling it "obviously strange."
This was due to the long-term warming from heat-trapping gases and the powerful El Nino, so these types of records will continue for a few more months, but probably will not be a permanent situation, Schmidt said in an email.
But other were not so sure, including Arndt, who compared it to moving into a new hotter neighborhood.

The amount of baked-in global warming, from carbon pollution already in the air, is enough to blow past international agreed upon goals to limit climate change, a new study finds.
But it’s not game over because, while that amount of warming may be inevitable, it can be delayed for centuries if the world quickly stops emitting extra greenhouse gases from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas, the study’s authors say.
For decades, scientists have talked about so-called “committed warming” or the increase in future temperature based on past carbon dioxide emissions that stay in the atmosphere for well over a century. It’s like the distance a speeding car travels after the brakes are applied.
But Monday’s study in the journal Nature Climate Change calculates that a bit differently and now figures the carbon pollution already put in the air will push global temperatures to about 2.3 degrees Celsius (4.1 degrees Fahrenheit) of warming since pre-industrial times.
Previous estimates, including those accepted by international science panels, were about a degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit) less than that amount of committed warming.
International climate agreements set goals of limiting warming to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) since pre-industrial times, with the more ambitious goal of limiting it to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) added in Paris in 2015. The world has already warmed about 1.1 degrees Celsius (2 degrees Fahrenheit).
“You’ve got some ... global warming inertia that’s going to cause the climate system to keep warming, and that’s essentially what we’re calculating,” said study co-author Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University. “Think about the climate system like the Titanic. It’s hard to turn the ship when you see the icebergs.”
Dessler and colleagues at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab and Nanjing University in China calculated committed warming to take into account that the world has warmed at different rates in different places and that places that haven’t warmed as fast are destined to catch up.
Places such as the Southern Ocean, surrounding Antarctica are a bit cooler, and that difference creates low-lying clouds that reflect more sun away from earth, keeping these places cooler. But this situation can’t keep going indefinitely because physics dictates that cooler locations will warm up more and when they do, the clouds will dwindle and more heating will occur, Dessler said.
Previous studies were based on the cooler spots staying that way, but Dessler and colleagues say that’s not likely.

A Week After the Pacific Northwest Heat Wave, Study Shows it Was ‘Almost Impossible’ Without Global Warming
The extreme temperatures have shaken scientists’ fundamental understanding of heat waves and triggered concerns about a climate tipping point.
The high temperatures in late June that killed hundreds of people in Oregon, Washington and Canada were so unusual that they couldn’t have happened without a boost from human-caused global warming, researchers said Wednesday when they released a rapid climate attribution study of the heat wave in the Pacific Northwest.
The temperatures were so far off the charts that the scientists suggested that global warming may be triggering a “non-linear” climate response, possibly involving drought magnifying the warming, to brew up extreme heat storms that exceed climate projections.
Climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, made the Pacific Northwest heat wave at least 150 times more likely, and increased its peak temperatures by about 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit, the study by World Weather Attribution concluded.
“I think it’s by far the largest jump in the record that I have ever seen,” said Fredi Otto, a University of Oxford climate researcher and co-author of the study. “We have seen temperature jumps in other heat waves, like in Europe, but never this big.”
The extreme temperature spike shook up some fundamental assumptions about heat waves, said co-author Geert Jan van Oldenborgh, of the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute. “It was way above the upper bounds,” he said. “It was surprising and I’m shaken that our theoretical understanding of how heat waves behave was so roughly broken. We’ve dialed down our certainty.” If global warming has pushed the climate past a heat wave tipping point, he added, “we are worried about these things happening everywhere.”
The Pacific Northwest heat wave should be a big warning, said co-author Dim Coumou, with the Institute for Environmental Studies at VU Amsterdam and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute. It shows climate scientists don’t understand the mechanisms driving such exceptionally high temperatures, suggesting that “we may have crossed a threshold in the climate system where a small amount of additional global warming causes a faster rise in extreme temperatures.”
In an unrelated study published July 6, European Union researchers studying climate tipping points found additional evidence that human-caused warming could be “abrupt and irreversible,” partly because the current warming is so fast that the climate system can’t adjust. Even the “safe operating space of 1.5 or 2.0 degrees above present generally assumed by the IPCC might not be all that safe,” said co-author Michael Ghil, with the University of Copenhagen.
About 800 people died across the Pacific Northwest during the heat wave, a number that will probably still go up as officials examine medical records and statistics in the coming weeks and months. The peak temperature was 121.3 degrees Fahrenheit on June 29 in Lytton, British Columbia. After setting heat records for Canada on three consecutive days, the town was mostly destroyed by a wildfire driven by hot winds in the dried out forests nearby. In addition to contributing to several major wildfires in the region that are still burning, the heat cooked growing fruit and scalded foliage on trees and other vegetation.

Monster wildfire tests years of forest management efforts
Ecologists in a vast region of wetlands and forest in remote Oregon have spent the past decade thinning young trees and using planned fires to try to restore the thick stands of ponderosa to a less fire-prone state.
This week, the nation’s biggest burning wildfire provided them with an unexpected, real-world experiment. As the massive inferno half the size of Rhode Island roared into the Sycan Marsh Preserve, firefighters said the flames jumped less from treetop to treetop and instead returned to the ground, where they were easier to fight, moved more slowly and did less damage to the overall forest.

While good forest management practices can help tame wildfires, evidence from areas without any forest management practices show that the planet is more vulnerable to extreme fires than it has been in the past.
I didn't use the extreme forest fires in Australia, Indonesia and Brazil as examples, because those areas have been massively disrupted. But large portions of Siberia are intact, creating examples of what's happening in natural systems.

Still a registered democrat*, but not a 'droid. I've had questions about democrats since Clinton, severe issues since Obama (his inability to prosecute any of the financial institutions early-on did not endear me), and Hillary (and Schumer and Pelosi) broke what was left of any good will.

Yeah, all solid crooks. I'm a registered democrat, that doesn't actually affect my perspective at all. It's all a scam.
The media is the real problem, and it's funny so much of the Niki left (left or die basically) swallows everything they say, since the media is also a giant corporate multinational. They fail to see the "you will be forced to be our customer and believe whatever we say" problem, and the "we hire more psychologists than researchers, because we're brainwashing you"
Meanwhile, the right also has a blindspot for the corporate profit driven "free market" free trade internationalism that turns into "you will be forced to be our customer and believe whatever we say" problem, which also slides into communism.
On Climate Change, there are serious environmental problems, but the media won't focus on them, becuase both its corporate and its govt interests are tied up in creating those problems (like the not-really-wild-fires), and the water contamination, over active use of chemicals in resource mining, overfishing, deforestation, habitat and species destruction, localized rather than global air pollution that contains things like TCE far more toxic than co2.
Trying to find the truth in the middle is hard. I tend to try to find out what the story is (if there's a conspiracy and the media tries to actively shutdown that conspiracy or fact-check it, there's a story.) Then I research on my own and see if I can come up with an answer without reading any of the conspiracy stuff, then I check the results I independently got with what's circulating, and if "people with PhDs who have been kicked out of the govt or corporation for their beliefs when they uncovered some scandal" agree with me, I feel pretty good about my anwser. If someone in media or govt with obvious agenda agrees with me, and is pushing it hard, then i'm probably still wrong. (like if you're completely in line with alex jones on the right or michael moore on the left, you're probably missing some piece of the puzzle)
This is why left-right debates are foolish and why I gave up on RWED, there was too much tribal auto-denial. I always meant to spend more time on the rest of this site, like fan fiction etc. When I realized RWED was eating time, I realized politics was. The only enlightened position I think is that the left-right debate is a control mechanism to force us to "need" our overlords to protect us from the opinions of our fellow citizens.
Re: conspiracy theories, yes, they're mostly bunk, but they're mostly harmless bunk, and everyone once in a while they're correct, and that's when it matters. "Victor Gollancz's idea that the Germans plan to exterminate millions of jews in Eastern Europe is a crazy baseless conspiracy theory" or words to that effect were printed in the jewish owned New York Times in 1938. Gollancz was also jewish. At the critical time, it's not who we are or what we believe that matters, it's our ability to separate fact from fiction, regardless of how unlikely the fact may appear to be, or how likely the fiction appears.

Growing acceptance of the reality of climate change has not translated into support for the one strategy that scientists said in a major U.N. report this week is imperative to avert an even more harrowing future: stop burning fossil fuels.
Instead, Republicans want to spend billions to prepare communities to cope with extreme weather and are trying to block efforts by Democrats to cut the emissions that are fueling the disasters in the first place.
Dozens of Republicans in the House and Senate said in recent interviews that quickly switching to wind, solar and other clean energy will damage an economy that has been underpinned by fossil fuels for more than a century.
“I’m not doing anything to raise the cost of living for American families,” said Sen. Rick Scott of Florida, where climate-fueled disasters have cost the state more than $100 billion over the past decade, according to estimates from the federal government.
Scott said he wants to address climate change, but “you can’t do it where you’re killing jobs.”
It’s a message supported by polling that shows Republican voters are more concerned with jobs than the environment.

Global sizzling: July was hottest month on record, NOAA says
Earth sizzled in July and became the hottest month in 142 years of recordkeeping, U.S. weather officials announced.
As extreme heat waves struck parts of the United States and Europe, the globe averaged 62.07 degrees (16.73 degrees Celsius) last month, beating out the previous record set in July 2016 and tied again in 2019 and 2020. the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Friday. The margin was just .02 degrees (.01 Celsius),
The last seven Julys, from 2015 to 2021, have been the hottest seven Julys on record, said NOAA climatologist Ahira Sanchez-Lugo. Last month was 1.67 degrees (0.93 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average for the month.
“In this case first place is the worst place to be,” NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad said in a press release. “This new record adds to the disturbing and disruptive path that climate change has set for the globe.”
“This is climate change,” said Pennsylvania State University climate scientist Michael Mann. “It is an exclamation mark on a summer of unprecedented heat, drought, wildfires and flooding.”
Earlier this week, a prestigious United Nations science panel warned of worsening climate change caused by the burning of coal, oil and natural gas and other human activity.
Warming on land in western North America and in parts of Europe and Asia really drove the record-setting heat, Sanchez-Lugo said. While the worldwide temperature was barely higher than the record, what shattered it was land temperature over the Northern Hemisphere, she said.
Northern Hemisphere temperatures were a third of a degree (.19 degrees Celsius) higher than the previous record set in July 2012, which for temperature records is “a wide margin,” Sanchez-Lugo said.
July is the hottest month of the year for the globe, so this is also the hottest month on record.
One factor helping the world bake this summer is a natural weather cycle called the Arctic Oscillation, sort of a cousin to El Nino, which in its positive phase is associated with more warming, the NOAA climatologist said.
Even with a scorching July and a nasty June, this year so far is only the sixth warmest on record. That’s mostly because 2021 started cooler than recent years due to a La Nina cooling of the central Pacific that often reduces the global temperature average, Sanchez-Lugo said.
“One month by itself does not say much, but that this was a La Nina year and we still had the warmest temperatures on record ... fits with the pattern of what we have been seeing for most of the last decade now,” said University of Illinois meteorology professor Donald Wuebbles.
While the world set a record in July, the United States only tied for its 13th hottest July on record. Even though California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington had their hottest Julys, slightly cooler than normal months in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Alabama, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire kept the nation from approaching record heat levels.
The last time the globe had a July cooler than the 20th century average was in 1976, which was also the last year the globe was cooler than that normal.
“So if you’re younger than 45 you haven’t seen a year (or July) where the mean temperature of the planet was cooler than the 20th century average,” said Princeton University climate scientist Gabriel Vecchi.

Playing Nice With the Fossil Fuel Industry Is Climate Denial
The Biden administration is now on track to approve more oil and gas drilling on public lands—activity that accounts for a quarter of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions—than any administration since George W. Bush. Climate envoy John Kerry has balked at the idea of committing the U.S. to a coal phaseout. Politicians who call themselves climate hawks are still going out of their way to make clear that there’s a vibrant future ahead for the companies that funded climate denial, whose business model remains built around burning up and extracting as many fossil fuels as possible. Administration officials, meanwhile, have talked repeatedly about the need to cap warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
This is climate denial. These politicians don’t dispute that the climate is changing, but they are absolutely in denial about what curbing it would entail.
Rhetorically, the administration has emphasized electric vehicles, in particular, as being at the core of its climate agenda. With the right incentives, the thinking goes, the U.S. can transform a historically important sector into an engine of green job creation and decarbonization. So what is the White House doing to make good on its promise of sparking an E.V. revolution? Last week, the White House announced that it had reached a nonbinding deal with the country’s biggest automakers that half their new vehicles would be electric, plug-in hybrid, or hydrogen-electric by 2030.
That target in fact falls short of what car companies themselves previously pledged. And the funding for the goal is pretty meager, too. Electric vehicles and buses only get $7.5 billion each in the bipartisan infrastructure plan, to be parceled out over 10 years in the form of incentives rather than direct spending.
Showing off a modest pilot project for solar-paneled highways last week, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg claimed the U.S. has entered the race to “win the E.V. market.” This, to put it plainly, is ridiculous. Let’s compare, for example, where the U.S. is to where China is on that front. The U.S. currently has 1,650 electric and fuel cell buses currently or “soon to be” in use. Since 2015, China has rolled out 421,000 electric buses via generous industrial policy that paid automaker BYD the equivalent of $150,000 for every $300,000 electric bus it churned out. That was paired with procurement policies that created a built-in market for what were then still clunky e-buses, forcing manufacturers to work out the kinks as they scaled production to meet demand from the public sector. Shenzhen alone now has 16,000 electric buses, along with some 12,000 E.V. taxis.
The American automobile industry, specifically Ford and GM, have known for over half a century about the threat their products posed to the habitability of the planet. They responded by funding climate denial. The Biden administration is offering these companies free advertising and voluntary incentives to change course. That isn’t treating climate change as a crisis so much as a business opportunity for its favorite sectors.
Decarbonization is fundamentally a planning problem. The U.S. (among other rich countries) has grown allergic to planning, at least in the areas that might help reduce emissions. Even in the places where it’s most bullish, like E.V.s, the best the administration can imagine is tweaks around the edges.
The physical reality of climate change doesn’t make the politics surrounding it any easier. Thanks to the decades-long push to drag the U.S. political spectrum to the right, any reasonable solutions for dealing with the climate crisis seem all but impossible here. Realistically, at this point, climate leadership will have to come from elsewhere. Whatever climate spending Democrats can eke out of reconciliation is certainly welcome. But something’s gotta give at a much larger scale. The planet we’ve known already is venturing into “unprecedented” territory. Our politics should, too.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) , who chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources committee, will not support a clean electricity program. Why?
Manchin’s home state of West Virginia is one of the largest producers of coal in the US, and Manchin himself benefits financially from coal, the dirtiest fuel for electric power plants. Explaining his opposition, Manchin said in so many words: Just because I say so. How dare you accuse a Senator of being crooked!
The clean electricity standard is a bit of a misnomer because the actual policy being discussed is even more boring-sounding: a clean electricity payment program that pays utilities to clean up their act (which means stop burning coal) and fines them for missing deadlines.
The program would help bring lagging areas up to speed with the ambitious targets set by the Biden administration, which call for 80 percent of the nation’s electricity to come from clean sources by 2030, and 100 percent by 2035. Not only will getting to 100 percent clean electricity directly cut more than a quarter of US carbon pollution, it will also enable large parts of our transportation, building, and industrial sectors to run on clean power. Powering as much of these sectors as we can with carbon-free electricity would allow us to cut US emissions 70 to 80 percent. It would, in short, solve a huge chunk of our climate challenge.
Sen. Joe Manchin does NOT want to reduce carbon because that would close his family's coal mining business. He does NOT want to shutdown his business in 2035, which is only 14 years from now. The motivation for a Capitalist such as Manchin is very easy to understand, but only if you ignore his deflections and rationalizations, which are camouflage for his real motivation -- money.

U.S. dry natural gas production is expected to average 92.6 Bcf/d this year, which is 1.1 Bcf/d more than in 2020 but 0.3 Bcf/d less than in 2019.
Because U.S. LNG exports have grown faster than domestic natural gas production, inventories are lower than average. As of the end of September, EIA estimates that total U.S. natural gas inventories are 5.5% below the five-year (2016–2020) average. EIA forecasts that U.S. inventories of natural gas will begin the winter heating season on November 1 at 3,572 Bcf, or 4.8% below the five-year average. Lower U.S. inventories could contribute to more natural gas price volatility, particularly if any area in the United States experiences a severe cold snap, which makes the price outlook for this winter very uncertain.

Criminy”—and if Manchin is willing to go along with a major tax credit program, it will be on the rest of the party to decide whether they can live with two-thirds of a loaf. “The thing that I’m fearful about is if progressives say now that Manchin’s killed the CEPP, the whole thing’s going to die, because we can’t support this,” Resources for the Future’s Hafstead told me. “What I don’t want to see, what I hope not to see, is that everything gets taken off the table because this one piece of the puzzle gets taken away.” Compromising with a human chimney might be painful, but there’s still a chance to do vast amounts of good.
