Rodney is on the right path here. And we have also had the inspector general come in and make 106 recommendations to make the Capitol safer.
That has not been the case. On the Senate side, you had a bipartisan Republican and Democrat, two different committees look at this. And we watched the failure after failure. We continue to do the research and continue to do the investigation, Jim Banks, Jim Jordan and those who were supposed to be appointed to that committee.
We have sat with the Capitol Police. And we have learned a tremendous amount of information, that they were ill-prepared that day, that the information that had been given to people had not been passed on to prepare for them. Never were we warned on the Republican side that this was even possible about happening.
So there's a lot of questions here. And if Speaker Pelosi -- and remember who she appointed to the January 6 Committee. The chair says she is off-limit

In the three cases before Mehta on Monday, the defendants include Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani, etc. In court, they are distancing themselves from the actions of the crowd on January 6, and asking Mehta to dismiss the cases. According to Trump's arguments, allowing the lawsuits to go forward would "drastically" chill political speech and prompt dozens of lawsuits aimed at damaging electoral opponents.
Trump, for his part, has argued in court he has absolute immunity for his actions while President, another claim Mehta will consider.

Trump Used Forged Documents in His Coup Attempt
Last week, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel referred to federal prosecutors a criminal investigation into who was behind a Dec. 14, 2020, certificate falsely attesting that Donald Trump won Michigan’s electoral votes. The next day, New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas made a similar referral to federal prosecutors in his state. Those who had a hand in crafting and attempting to submit false certificates of electors may have committed multiple crimes, including forgery and fraud.
The actions of these state officials are important steps toward uncovering the scope and depth of the attempted plot to steal the election and keep former President Donald Trump in power.
Significantly, the Michigan and New Mexico schemes were not isolated episodes. Rather, they appear to have been part of an organized scheme run through seven states. Many of the certificates used the same words and font, as if coordinated and copied from a common template. By contrast, the genuine certificates vary greatly in form, language, and look.
Five of these certificates—those from Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, and Wisconsin—outright claimed to set forth those states’ “duly appointed electors.”
The certificates for Pennsylvania and New Mexico hedged by saying that if the courts determine that the election was invalid, then these would be the alternate electoral slates. Even that was false; state legislatures or governors had to validate the slates for them to have even a sheen of legitimacy.
The possible conspiracy to declare these forged documents authentic may have extended all the way into the executive branch. It was no secret that solicitations to create the alternate slates came from the Trump campaign. A public court filing challenging Wisconsin’s vote said so. So did a Dec. 14, 2020, Pennsylvania GOP press release. Significantly, that same day, top Trump White House aide Stephen Miller said on Fox: “As we speak today, an alternate slate of electors in the contested states is going to vote, and we’re going to send those results up to Congress. This ensures that all of our legal remedies remain open.”
Two things are noteworthy: the White House’s fingerprints on the scheme, and Miller’s mention of “legal remedies,” telling us that the strategy likely came from a lawyer likely paid by Trump.
The existence of the phony alternate Trump elector certificates was pivotal to the Eastman/Trump bloodless coup strategy.

Former Vice President Mike Pence forcefully rejected former President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that Mr. Pence could have overturned the 2020 election outcome during the session of Congress that was interrupted by pro-Trump rioters.

Just hours before Mr. Pence’s speech, Republicans rebuked two House lawmakers for serving on the select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, as the GOP continues to grapple with Mr. Trump’s failed effort to block the result.
A resolution calling for the censure of Reps. Liz Cheney of Wyoming and Adam Kinzinger of Illinois passed in a voice vote during a meeting of the Republican National Committee in Salt Lake City on Friday. The RNC, which is closely aligned with Mr. Trump, is made up of party officials representing U.S. states and territories.
The resolution accuses the lawmakers of disloyalty, alleging they have “demonstrated, with actions and words, that they support Democrat efforts to destroy President Trump more than they support winning back a Republican majority in 2022.”
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said Ms. Cheney and Mr. Kinzinger “crossed a line” by joining what she termed a “Democrat-led persecution of ordinary citizens who engaged in legitimate political discourse that had nothing to do with violence at the Capitol.”
On Jan. 6, supporters of Mr. Trump stormed the Capitol in an effort to block the certification of President Biden’s victory by Congress and Mr. Pence. Mr. Trump, who gave a speech encouraging supporters to march to the Capitol, was impeached by the House on a count of inciting an insurrection. In the Senate, all 50 members of the Democratic caucus were joined by seven Republicans in voting to convict, shy of the 67 needed.

This article on the Senators of 1860 was published on January 5, 2021, one day before Jan 6th.
At least a dozen Republican senators have signed on to a last-ditch effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, vowing to object to the electoral vote totals from several swing states when they are certified in a joint session of Congress on Wednesday.
Among those who refuse to accept President-elect Joe Biden's victory over President Trump: Ted Cruz (Tex.), Josh Hawley (Mo.), Marsha Blackburn (Tenn.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), John Kennedy (La.) and James Lankford (Okla.).
That has critics accusing the lawmakers of sedition — inciting rebellion against the authority of the government — and calling for their expulsion. No senator has been expelled since the Civil War, when 14 mostly Southern senators were kicked out by their colleagues.
The fuse had been lit Nov. 6, 1860. Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election despite not being on the ballot in 10 Southern states and earning less than 40 percent of the popular vote.
Four days after the election, the first senator bailed; James Chesnut of South Carolina submitted his resignation in a one-sentence note, which was "accepted enthusiastically" by other lawmakers, according to New York Times coverage.
As states seceded that December and January, more senators followed their states out the door. Some simply didn't show up for the next session; others made formal resignations. Crowds lined up in the frigid dawn to hear Sen. Jefferson Davis's farewell address, during which he made clear he thought secession was justified because he believed Lincoln would end slavery.
The audience wept openly and gave him rapturous applause. A few weeks later, he was president of the Confederacy.
In March, the remaining senators debated what to do about the empty seats. Did they not exist anymore because those states said they were no longer a part of the Union? Or if states were not permitted to secede, then were they merely vacant? They decided on the latter.
Some senators, such as Texas's Louis T. Wigfall, tried to have it both ways, remaining in the Senate even after their states seceded. Wigfall used his perch in Washington to spy on the Union and smuggle weapons South. For a time, he was both a U.S. senator and a member of the Confederate Congress, according to the Texas State Historical Association. Then in April 1861, he rowed into the middle of the action — literally in a boat — at Fort Sumter and into the Civil War.
When the Senate reconvened in July, the remaining members had had enough. Sen. Daniel Clark of New Hampshire proposed a resolution to expel 10 senators on the grounds they were "engaged in a conspiracy for the destruction of the Union and government, or, with full knowledge of such conspiracy, have failed to advise the government of its progress or aid in its suppression."
The Constitution requires a two-thirds majority to expel a member of the Senate. Before this moment, only one senator had been expelled, and more than six decades had passed since that time. The motion passed 32 to 10; those expelled were the two senators each from Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas and Virginia, plus Chesnut of South Carolina and Alfred O.P. Nicholson of Tennessee.
Within seven months, four more were expelled for offering aid to the enemy, including John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky, whom Lincoln had beaten in the 1860 election.
Almost all of the expelled men joined the Confederacy in leadership positions. Four died during or shortly after the war; when the Confederacy surrendered, four escaped to other countries and two were briefly imprisoned. Within a few years, all had resumed distinguished careers, though none ever returned to the Senate.

Trump has encouraged a strange notion: that what really happened on January 6th is what Representative Matt Gaetz, of Florida, calls a Fedsurrection. The theory is convoluted, but the gist of it is that the deep state sent agents provocateurs into the crowd and led it to the Capitol with the goal of stopping what would otherwise have been an orderly and peaceful demonstration. Trump supporters have scoured footage from that day in a search for suspected Fedsurrectionists; Trump baselessly named one of their targets while speaking at a rally in Arizona, on January 15th. If Mike Pence deserves praise for asserting that he didn’t have authority to overthrow the American government on Jan 6th, I’d like to be recognized for the character it took not to rob a single bank I passed on the way to the grocery store.
Mike Pence was surrounded by a conspiracy to end democracy in America. He didn’t call the FBI. He didn’t alert the public. He waited to see if it would succeed. When it was clear it would fail, at the last minute he threw in with the winning side.
Until Mike Pence asserts aggressively, consistently and without equivocation that he and Trump lost a fair election, he should be considered for what he is: a liar attacking American democracy. Saying he couldn't overturn election is not saying it was a fair election he lost.
The press is desperate for a "normal" GOP. One guy, Mike Pence, who holds no office, is hardly a bellwether of the party. So tired of the lionization of Pence by the Press for him doing the barest of minimums over a year later.

There's no real debate -- especially from Trump -- that he believed then-Vice President Mike Pence could (and should) have rejected electors from several states.

"If there is fraud or large scale irregularities, it would have been appropriate to send those votes back to the legislatures to figure it out. The Dems and RINOs want to take that right away. And there's also no question that Trump leaned hard on Pence -- right up until January 6 -- to change his mind.
