Quote:The simplified point of the Monitor's editorial: After Russia took Crimea by force in 2014 it suppressed all faiths in the peninsula other than the Russian Orthodox Church. Since February of this year, Russia has been destroying churches that are NOT Russian Orthodox. The war in 2022 reinforces Ukraine’s national narrative that it is a country that honors individual rights, especially religious liberty. As Ukrainians defend their own religious liberty, they are doing so for everyone.

I've become so jaded that I didn't believe that Hollywood was even capable of putting a film like this out anymore. Not only was it the best comic book movie that likely will ever exist, but if one was being honest with themselves they'd be hard pressed to find another movie of any genre that was better than Joker.
Maybe I'm just still "high" off of it, and it wasn't as good as it "felt"? This is a possibility. Watching it was grueling. My first words to my old man when it finally ended were "I'm exhausted". How Russia Turned Its War Around
Putin isn’t winning yet. But his military is finally waging the kind of campaign it knows best.
The war is likely to slog on for as long as the weapons keep coming. Far from modifying their rhetoric, to allow for negotiation, the two sides have intensified their harshness. Putin — who once said he invaded in order to halt the eastward expansion of NATO, or to stop Ukraine’s mythical “genocide” in Donbas, or to “de-Nazify” the government in Kyiv — now likens himself to Peter the Great on a holy mission to recapture lost territory of the Russian empire. Zelensky, who not long ago took a stab at compromise by saying he didn’t have to join NATO after all, now pledges not to surrender a kilometer of Ukrainian territory.
Both sides insist they must win. For the moment, they’re both losing.

Under Russian Artillery Fire, Ukrainians Wait on Western Arms
One soldier, who wasn’t authorized to speak on the record, said that Ukraine was still desperately awaiting weaponry that Western countries had promised, but there were severe logistical difficulties with getting it to the front lines. “It is all good and dandy that they’ve given us the howitzer, but how many did they give? For our little region here in Slovyansk and Kramatorsk, they gave us five or maybe seven things. They don’t give us tanks or proper air defense because they are fucking worried we will shoot into Russia!”

Hrrmmm... you might want to check out: "Operation Mincemeat" - sounds way too similar and very timely. Amazon just released a movie version.
"Operation Mincemeat was a successful British deception operation of the Second World War to disguise the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. Two members of British intelligence obtained the body of Glyndwr Michael, a tramp who died from eating rat poison, dressed him as an officer of the Royal Marines and placed personal items on him identifying him as the fictitious Captain (Acting Major) William Martin. Correspondence between two British generals which suggested that the Allies planned to invade Greece and Sardinia, with Sicily as merely the target of a feint, was also placed on the body."
Looks like that article has been removed.

Boris Johnson has announced that the UK will oversee a new three-week training programme for Ukrainian soldiers, as he visited Kyiv for the third time this year for talks with the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
In a statement released by No 10, Johnson said: “As Ukrainian soldiers fire UK missiles in defence of your nation’s sovereignty, they do so also in defence of the very freedoms we take for granted. That is why I have offered President Zelenskiy a major new military training programme that could change the equation of this war – harnessing that most powerful of forces, the Ukrainian determination to win.”
The UK has provided £1.3bn worth of economic and military support to Ukraine, including anti-tank missiles, armoured vehicles and plastic explosives. But Ukraine’s armed forces have been pressing for training on western military kit, as well as more heavy weapons. Kyiv wants a rapid influx of expertise and equipment so it can try to start pushing Russia back before the weather turns.
The new training programme announced by Johnson will involve UK-led courses lasting three weeks, and include battle skills, basic medical training, cybersecurity and counter-explosive tactics. The courses will take place outside Ukraine, most likely in Poland.
Johnson said: “Two months on from my last visit, the Ukrainian grit, determination and resilience is stronger than ever, and I know that unbreakable resolve will long outlive the vain ambitions of President Putin.”

The European Union has “completely lost sovereignty” and is “dancing to someone else’s tunes”, Putin says. (Whose tune? Putin didn't say. Presumably the USA, but that's not what the EU says.)
He accuses the EU of “taking everything that is dictated to them and dealing harm” to its population, business and economy.
Turning to the global food crisis, Putin claims the problem “did not emerge today” and accuses Europe of “trying to blame it on someone else”.
He says:
Russia is certainly not to blame even though [western countries] are trying to pin the blame on us, on everything that’s happening in the world economy.
He accuses the US of driving up food prices by printing money and “snapping up” food on global markets.
Russia stands ready to boost its exports of grain and fertilisers, Putin says, and will send food exports to Africa and the Middle East. ("Russia stands ready" means nothing since Putin didn't say why he hasn't already sent the food. Maybe he waits for a "Feed The World" concert with Lady Gaga, the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Elton John to be held before Putin acts? No such concert has been scheduled.)

Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on Sunday called Mr. Lavrov’s comments “a terrible historical error” and said he was summoning Russia’s ambassador for consultations and would demand an apology.
Asked Sunday by Italy’s Rete 4 channel about Russian claims that it invaded Ukraine to “denazify” the country, Mr. Lavrov said that Ukraine could still have Nazi elements even if some figures, including Zelensky, were Jewish.
“When they say, ‘What sort of Nazification is this if we are Jews’—well I think that Hitler also had Jewish origins, so it means nothing,” Mr. Lavrov said, speaking through an interpreter.
He added: “For a long time now we’ve been hearing the wise Jewish people say that the biggest anti-Semites are the Jews themselves.”
Russian officials have repeatedly claimed that one of their aims in attacking Ukraine was to remove Nazi elements from its government.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said the invasion of Ukraine is justified because the country’s leaders are nationalists and neo-Nazis who must be stopped from carrying out a genocide against Russians and Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine. He has provided no evidence for the claims.
Mr. Lavrov appeared to amplify a conspiracy theory that Hitler’s paternal grandfather was Jewish, which was first popularized by the 1953 memoir by Hitler’s lawyer Hans Frank, who claimed to have found evidence of the Nazi leader’s alleged Jewish ancestry.
These claims have been dismissed by mainstream historians.
In the Soviet Union, and later in Russia, the terms “Nazi” and “fascist” have been frequently used to smear all opponents, including opposition activists and foreign critics.

Ukraine says it hit Russian navy tugboat with two Harpoon missiles
Just days after the US committed to supplying Harpoon missile launchers to Ukraine, the Ukrainian navy managed the first Harpoon missile strike of the war.
Ukraine's navy said they struck the Russian navy's Vasiliy Bekh tugboat in the Black Sea with two Harpoon missiles on Friday, the first time Ukraine has said it hit a Russian vessel with Harpoons.
The Vasiliy Bekh was allegedly transporting ammunition, weapons and personnel for the Black Sea Fleet to Snake Island. Most notably, the vessel was allegedly carrying a TOR M2KM anti-air surface-to-air missile system. It would be the 14th vessel lost by the Russian fleet since the war began.
Ukraine's Armed Forces Strategic Communications Directorate published a video purporting to show the strike from the air, but Reuters could not independently verify the footage.

Falsus in unum, falsus in omnibus
1. 6ix, you sound like Putin when he threatens to have somebody nuke the USA. But Russian generals probably aren't listening because Putin is a crazy pipsqueak (possibly dying of cancer). 6ix reminds me of other crazy pipsqueaks I know. Funny how pipsqueaks vote for Trump. I doubt Haken voted for Trump. I doubt Haken writes "nobody cares about Ukraine" as 6ix does, but you never know. Maybe Haken will bend to your crazy will, 6ix, because Haken senses something worthwhile beyond your squeakiness.
2. Have you recently heard all the things Putin is saying about the USA? Short version is that Russia is not fighting Ukraine. Rather it is fighting the USA. Putin knows that he is rabble-rousing Russians, in order to get them to support the war. It is of no consequence that his lies will be recognized back in the USA and EU because his Russians won't know they have been lied to. Similarly, 6ix, you lying about me, misidentifying me as "Reaverfan", the way Putin is lying about the USA.
I continue to love 6ix's signature "Falsus in unum, falsus in omnibus" or "false in one thing, false in everything." Putin would wisely not make that his signature because he, unlike 6ix, would understand the irony. Liars such as Putin, 6ix and Trump should never point out that everything they say is not to be trusted. 6ix is the only one of the 3 dumb enough to make lying part of his personal signature.

The fog of war and international relations in Ukraine
Eric Kramer | June 17, 2022 8:51 am
https://angrybearblog.com/2022/06/the-fog-of-war-and-international-rel
ations-in-ukraine
Understanding the situation in Ukraine and how it will likely evolve in the future is impossible for me, partly due the inherent complexity and unpredictability of war and international relations, and partly because the main players have such strong incentives to strategically misrepresent their actions and intentions. Are the Ukrainians really getting killed by Russian artillery fire in unsustainable numbers, or are the Ukrainians putting pressure on Biden and the Europeans to step up arms deliveries? Is the U.S. committed to supplying the Ukrainians with needed weapons as rapidly as training and logistics permit, or are we slow-walking arms deliveries? Are we willing to leave the end-game negotiations entirely to the Ukrainians, or are we prepared to pressure Ukraine into a land-for-peace deal by withholding material support? Even if Biden/European leaders are willing to support the Ukrainians now, how will public opinion evolve (against Ukraine, I am afraid)? What happens if Russia turns off the oil or gas spigots? If Ukraine holds off the current Russian onslaught, will they be able to mount a sustainable offensive to reclaim captured land?
Granted I am not at all an expert in military affairs and international relations, but people who spend their lives studying these issues come to different conclusions that to me seem at least somewhat plausible.

1. 6ix, you sound like Putin when he threatens to have somebody nuke the USA.

HEY, THUGR: "Fighting for every inch" is NOT a winning strategy. it is a strategy designed to get Ukrainian soldiers killed en masse. When you have air control and the upper hand in longer-range weapons, as Russia does, concentrations of Ukrainian troops and materiel will simply be destroyed. Pouring more men and weaponry into range of Russia's artillery is a losing proposition and a guarantee of defeat. It's tragic and tragically stupid, not heroic.
Ukraine DOES have some areas heavily trenched and isn't above emplacing its weaponry in apartment buildings, schools, hospitals and malls, so that complicates Russian use of artillery and longer-range weapons. But if Ukrainian troops can be drawn out into a kill zone, as has happened in northern Luhansk, the Russians don't mind shelling all week long.

Ukraine - The West's Response As It Meets With Reality
This morning I watched an hour long discussion (vid) by 'experts' at the Center for Strategic & International Studies about assessing Russia's war in Ukraine. I have to say that these folks know nothing that is relevant. They seem to have never heard of Sun Tsu's dictum 'Know your enemy':
Sun Tzu says, “To know your enemy, you must become your enemy,” but how do you become your enemy? You need to put yourself in the place of your enemy so you can predict his actions.
Not once did the CSIS people consider the view of Russia or its real intent. They talk about this or that U.S. option but do not even once consider how the other side would react to it.
One of the CSIS 'experts' says that Russia had planned to take Kiev but failed. Take Kiev with what? There were some 20-30.000 Russian soldiers near Kiev which has some 3 million inhabitants. Historically one needs one soldier for every 40 civilians to occupy a city or country after the fighting is mostly over. Russia would have needed more than two and a half times the number of troops it had around Kiev to take and hold the city.
Several of the CSIS 'experts' have previously held high government positions in the security state. With folks like them it is no wonder to see how badly the U.S. plan to drag Russia into a long war in Ukraine is playing out.
As Daniel Larson correctly writes: We should’ve known sanctions on Russia wouldn’t work as intended
The other side of the game is much more conscious of the real situation and it does consider and correctly predicts U.S. reactions.
On Thursday the Foreign Minister of the Russian federation Sergey Lavrov gave three interviews to different news outlets.
The first one with TASS was quite short.
Transcript: Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with TASS news agency, St Petersburg, June 16, 2022
The second one with BBC shows an acerbic Lavrov who several times reminds the interviewer that many cruel things had happened in Ukraine before the "Special Military Operation" started on February 24, that negotiations had failed and that Ukrainian duties under the Minsk agreements were not carried out. The interviewer tries again and again to neglect that historical context and to put the blame for the war on Russia. Lavrov calls that a form of 'chancel culture'.

Transcript: Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s interview with the BBC TV channel, St Petersburg, June 16, 2022
Question: But the situation changed four months ago …
Sergey Lavrov: The situation has not changed. We are going back to what the Minsk agreements were coordinated for: protecting Russians in Donbass, who have been betrayed by the French and Germans. The British also played a leading role. All our Western colleagues kept saying they were unable to make Kiev honour the Minsk agreements.
...
Question: In the eyes of the West, Russia is responsible for these people. Do you think the death sentence …
Sergey Lavrov: I am not interested in the “eyes of the West” at all. I am only interested in international law, according to which mercenaries are not combatants. So nothing in your eyes matters.
The last Lavrov interview is with a Russian TV station. It is the longest but also the best. It explains Russia's position quite well and is easy to understand.

National Defense Magazine had an interview with the logistic commander of the Ukrainian land forces which includes some revealing details.
First, you have to understand that the frontline is 2,500 kilometers long. The frontline where there is active combat in more than 1,000 kilometers long. That’s like from Kyiv to Berlin.
...
Think about this: one brigade occupies around 40 kilometers of the fence line. That means that to cover the active combat conflict we need 40 brigades. Every brigade is 100 infantry fighting vehicles, 30 tanks, 54 artillery systems — just for one brigade, and we have 40 of them.
I'm not going to talk about the anti-tank guided missiles or anti-tank guided weapons for now. I’m just talking about heavy weapons. As of today,we have approximately 30 to 40, sometimes up to 50 percent of losses of equipment as a result of active combat. So, we have lost approximately 50 percent. … Approximately 1,300 infantry fighting vehicles have been lost, 400 tanks, 700 artillery systems.
If you total up replacements provided by "the west", they make up only approximately 10% of the intial equipment ... not even covering the losses that Kiev has experienced.
Please, for your own sake, stop being a brainless cheerleader. Surely, you're more capable than that.

Kyiv’s Theory of Victory
By Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
June 17, 2022
Although rising food and energy costs are serious problems, giving in to Moscow is no solution — and not only because of what it will mean for Ukrainians. Russia is a revanchist country bent on remaking the entire world through force. It actively works to destabilize African, Arab, and Asian states both through its own military and through proxies. These conflicts have created their own humanitarian crises, and if Ukraine loses they will only grow worse. In victory, Putin would be emboldened to stir up more unrest and create more disasters across the developing world.
Putin’s increased aggression wouldn’t be limited to the developing world. He would meddle with more vigor in U.S. and European politics. If he succeeds in conquering Ukraine’s south, he may march deeper into the continent by invading Moldova, where Russian proxies already control a slice of territory. He could even trigger a new war in the western Balkans, where increasingly antagonistic Serbian elites have looked to Russia for inspiration and support.

Lithuanian PM: Russia ‘keeps on proving we were right’
As Europe reels from Russia’s war against Ukraine, Lithuania—a Baltic country that’s intimately familiar with Kremlin domination—has emerged as a clear leader in responding to its aggression.
For years, said Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonyte at an exclusive Atlantic Council Front Page event Thursday, her country has warned the West about the security dangers posed by a revanchist Russia—which she says “keeps on proving we were right” about seeing Moscow as a threat.
“When people sometimes say, ‘Look, you were right—we should have been listening to you,’ I feel no happiness about it,” she told moderator Evelyn Farkas, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defense and the executive director of the McCain Institute.
Šimonyte described how her country of just 2.7 million, which has also boosted Taiwan and the Belarusian opposition, responds to the geopolitical challenges presented by Russia and other problematic states. Here are some more highlights from the conversation:
Šimonyte credits her country’s speedy integration into the global economy for its success in transitioning from communism to liberal democracy. But that’s not a universal recipe for democratization—something Lithuania’s proximity to Russia has helped reveal. “We actually lost our belief that Russia is willing to become part of this global economy in good faith,” she said.
Through its weaponization of energy, among other commodities, the Kremlin has shown that global economic interconnectedness is bound to “backfire if we are not smart enough to think of alternatives,” Šimonyte added.

What if Russia’s army fails in Ukraine?
Despite incremental gains in eastern Ukraine, a Russian military collapse is possible. Russian forces could suffer catastrophic defeat akin to that of Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s army in the 1967 Six Day War, when more than 80 percent of its military materiel was lost.
Is such a defeat possible? Military history is replete with breakdowns. Last summer, the Afghan armed forces collapsed amid weak governance and extreme corruption. So have other large or well-equipped armies — the demoralized Russian army in 1917; the outmaneuvered French army in 1940 and British army in Singapore in 1942; and the weakened South Vietnamese army in 1975 and Iraqi army in Mosul in 2014.
Central to these fiascos was a lack of cohesion in military institutions, poor governance and corruption, and popular unwillingness to defend the state. Military theorist Carl von Clausewitz’s emphasis on sound relationships between the army, government and society appears valid.
A Russian military collapse might have several implications.
First, it might encourage Western countries to boost train-and-equip programs in other countries near Russia. In Ukraine, this effort seems to have helped it adopt more flexible and successful NATO-like tactics.
Second, the collapse may cause Western intelligence analysts to reevaluate estimates of the vulnerability of the Baltics and Eastern Europe to Russian aggression. Against a Russian army that may be weaker than once thought, Baltic allies might consider defense options that go beyond tripwire postures.
Third, Western militaries may sharply increase their stocks of weapons, which have worked so well in Ukraine – such as portable anti-armor and anti-air – but which have been consumed in larger numbers than expected.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with a German newspaper published Sunday that the war in Ukraine could last for years.
In the interview with Bild am Sonntag, Stoltenberg cautioned that “nobody knows” exactly how long the war will continue, reiterating that the country needs support for as long as Russia’s invasion persists.
“We must prepare for the fact that it could take years,” Stoltenberg told the newspaper. “We must not let up in supporting Ukraine. Even if the costs are high, not only for military support, but also because of rising energy and food prices. But that is no comparison to the price that the Ukrainians have to pay every day with many lives.”

Reflecting a shockingly barbaric and old-fashioned wartime strategy, Russian forces have pummeled Ukrainian cities and towns with a barrage of rockets and other munitions, most of which can be considered relatively crude relics of the Cold War, and many of which have been banned widely under international treaties, according to a New York Times analysis.
The attacks have made repeated and widespread use of weapons that kill, maim and destroy indiscriminately — a potential violation of international humanitarian law. These strikes have left civilians — including children — dead and injured, and they have left critical infrastructure, like schools and homes, a shambles.
The Times examined more than 1,000 pictures taken by its own photojournalists and wire-service photographers working on the ground in Ukraine, as well as visual evidence presented by Ukrainian government and military agencies. Times journalists identified and categorized more than 450 instances in which weapons or groups of weapons were found in Ukraine. All told, there were more than 2,000 identifiable munitions, a vast majority of which were unguided.
The magnitude of the evidence collected and cataloged by The Times shows that the use of these kinds of weapons by Russia has not been limited or anomalous. In fact, it has formed the backbone of the country’s strategy for war since the beginning of the invasion.
Of the weapons identified by The Times, more than 210 were types that have been widely banned under international treaties. All but a handful were cluster munitions, including their sub-munitions, which can pose a grave risk to civilians for decades after war has ended. More than 330 other weapons appeared to have been used on or near civilian structures.

Have you been wondering why Russians are this way? Wonder no more:
How Extreme Views on Ukraine and the West Went Mainstream in Russia
by Emily Ferris
16 June 2022
https://www.rusi.org/explore-our-research/publications/commentary/how-
extreme-views-ukraine-and-west-went-mainstream-russia
In recent years, hard-line views once limited to ultra-nationalist Russian politicians like Vladimir Zhirinovsky have increasingly been espoused by the highest levels of the country’s leadership. How has this happened?
The war in Ukraine has prompted much soul-searching among Russia watchers and policymakers, to try to consider where we might have got Russia wrong, what we might have missed, and what this now means about how the West looks at Russia.
One of the most pressing concerns highlighted by this war has been the growing acceptance in Russia of previously fringe views on both Ukraine and the West. Several particular events in the past few weeks have illustrated this well. The first was the death in early April of nationalist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky, and the legacy that he leaves behind. The second was an important interview that head of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev gave on 26 April to the government-owned newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta. These, and other comments by the Russian senior leadership, have illustrated how peripheral ideas and ways of talking about Ukraine and the West have now become mainstream discourse.
A Toxic Legacy
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic party (LDPR), died on 6 April from complications related to COVID-19. Much of Zhirinovsky’s racist, misogynistic and boorish commentary over the years tended to be dismissed as a colourful addition to an occasionally dull line-up of mostly grey-suited men in the Duma (parliament). But many of the views that he held – particularly on Ukraine and the West – have over the years seeped into mainstream Russian discourse, and are now being regurgitated at the very top levels of power.
A conspiracy theorist known for his showboating in parliament, dishevelled attire and vulgar language, from 1989 Zhirinovsky led the LDPR – a party that became part of the Duma’s ‘systemic opposition’ which tacitly agreed with United Russia’s positions, while giving the veneer of an active and engaged opposition. Zhirinovsky never gained a serious number of votes in the multiple presidential elections he ran in, nor was he ever considered one of President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle. But he played a useful role in undermining the very concept of opposition, almost satirising the meaning of free speech and democracy and using the platform he was given as an outlet for extreme views. He was a convenient outlet to channel and amplify the Russian public’s general resentment – against living conditions, the West, or globalisation more broadly.
Taken in isolation, many of Zhirinovsky’s more outlandish statements were never a true barometer of public opinion, such as retaking Alaska by force from the US, or incorporating Kazakhstan into Russia. But disconcertingly, many of the views and expressions that he espoused about Ukraine and the West have been mimicked by those in important positions, and are now being used to promote Kremlin narratives about the war in Ukraine.
In late May, Leonid Slutsky duly replaced Zhirinovsky as leader of the party. It is an inauspicious alternative – in 2018 Slutsky was accused by several journalists (including from the BBC) of sexual harassment, which he denied, and he is believed to own property and land worth millions, which is not commensurate with his official salary. But Slutsky is also a senior member of Russia’s negotiating team on the Ukraine war and has continued Zhirinovsky’s unpleasant legacy. As Chairman of the State Duma’s Committee on International Affairs, as well as in his position as negotiator on Ukraine, he has espoused conspiracy theories about the US in particular, and what he has termed the West’s ‘neo-colonial policy’. Slutsky will play an important

Contrary to Washington’s triumphalist pronouncements, Russia is winning the war, Ukraine has lost the war. Any longer-term damage to Russia is open to debate.
American sanctions against Russia have turned out to be far more devastating to Europe than to Russia. The global economy has slowed and many developing nations face serious food shortages and risk of broad starvation.
There are already deep cracks in the European façade of so-called “NATO unity.” Western Europe will increasingly rue the day that it blindly followed the American Pied Piper to war against Russia. Indeed, this is not a Ukrainian-Russian war but an American-Russian war fought by proxy to the last Ukrainian.
Contrary to optimistic declarations, NATO may in fact ultimately emerge weakened. Western Europeans will think long and hard about the wisdom and deep costs of provoking deeper long term confrontations with Russia or other “competitors”of the US.
Europe will sooner or later return to the purchase of inexpensive Russian energy. Russia lies on the doorstep and a natural economic relationship with Russia will possess overwhelming logic in the end.
Europe already perceives the US as a declining power with an erratic and hypocritical foreign policy “vision” premised upon the desperate need to preserve “American leadership” in the world. America’s willingness to go to war to this end is increasingly dangerous to others.
You get three guesses.

"Washington’s triumphalist pronouncements" I have totally missed those. I have seen lots of reports on Russia's stumbling military putting their dck in the sand.
"Russia is winning the war" Huh? Define "winning." Denazifying Ukraine? "Returning" Russia's lost lands to their *rightful* owner at whatever cost to innocent lives? Stealing natural resources from a sovereign neighbor? "Killing more of them that they kill of us?" Great to see the pride Bully Russia has in beating up their smaller neighbors. No wonder so many countries openly hate Russia.
"America’s willingness to go to war to this end is increasingly dangerous to others." Makes no sense. We just ended 20 years of stupid in Afghanistan - way to go Joe! - and we would have sat on the world's front porch if Russia hadn't invaded Ukraine. Again. More accurately: Russia's dickheadedery is what is, "increasingly dangerous to others." Europe is seeing first hand that energy dependance on a corrupt gov like Russia is akin to extortion. Thanks Putin! As predicted, we'll see accelerated interest in renewables and alternative energy sources. Should have happened long ago, just took greedy, little-man-syndrome Putin to give everyone a nudge.
"NATO may in fact ultimately emerge weakened" - "they may" a lot of things. Nothing can stop people from saying stupid sht. Unless they live in Russia and don't want to go to jail.

The UK will ‘physically cease to exist’ if the latest stand-off in Lithuania triggers a nuclear World War Three, a retired Russian general claimed.
Speaking on Russian state TV this week, lieutenant general Evgeny Buzhinsky said the West is playing with fire in blockading the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, in order to prevent sanctioned goods from reaching the territory via Nato state Lithuania.
The military expert also lashed out at British general Sir Patrick Sanders, who took command of Britain’s land forces this week and announced his arrival with a chilling message saying troops should be prepared to fight Russia and defend Europe.
‘He doesn’t understand that as a result of the Third World War Britain will physically cease to exist,’ said Lieutenant Buzhinsky.
‘The island will vanish, so I’ve no idea where he or his descendants will live.’
In a chest-beating message sent to troops on his fourth day in charge of the armed forces, General Sanders said: ‘I am the first chief of the general staff since 1941 to take command of the Army in the shadow of a land war in Europe involving a continental power…
‘The scale of the enduring threat from Russia shows we’ve entered a new era of insecurity.
‘It is my singular duty to make our Army as lethal and effective as it can be. The time is now and the opportunity is ours to seize.’
In response, Lieutenant general Buzhinsky claimed alongside the war in Ukraine the situation in Kaliningrad was ‘deeply serious’, and urged president Vladimir Putin to move nuclear weapons to the exclave in order to protect Russian interests.
Formerly the Prussian outpost of Königsberg, the city of Kaliningrad is Russia’s most westerly territory and has been a key strategic outpost since the end of World War Two.
It is wedged in between Lithuania and Poland, and acts as the headquarters of the Kremlin’s Baltic Fleet.
‘This is a long game to push us out from the Baltic Sea, an attempt to block and cut Kaliningrad off, and finally to take it away from us,’ he claimed.
Lieutenant general Buzhinsky, who served in senior positions in the Russian defence ministry, said the West intended to ‘block Kaliningrad economically, completely, until our people howl from destitution’.
He added Putin should nullify the Soviet recognition of Lithuania’s independence, switch off its energy and take control of its borders.
‘And then finally we must take military measures,’ he concluded.
‘We’ve got to do something. We’ve got to strengthen our military presence at the border with Lithuania as we did in December last year, and January this year at the border with Ukraine.’
Elsewhere in the interview Lieutenant general Buzhinsky confirmed Russia was now effectively at war with Nato, adding any attempts to impede on Russia’s sovereign territory could make the situation in Ukraine look like ‘a joke’.
Elsewhere this week, Putin’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov warned all trust has now evaporated between the West and Moscow.
‘Relations between Russia and the West will not be back to the previous level, because Moscow will never again trust such “partners”,’ he told US TV channel MSNBC.
‘It will be a lengthy crisis, but we will never trust the West again.’
Between 2002 and 2009, Lieutenant general Buzhinsky, 72, was head of the International Treaty Directorate and deputy head of the Main Directorate for International Military Cooperation at the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said during a surprise trip to Ukraine on Tuesday that a veteran prosecutor known for investigating former Nazis would lead American efforts in tracking Russian war criminals.
Mr. Garland met for an hour with Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Iryna Venediktova, in the village of Krakovets, about a mile from the border with Poland, to discuss the technical, forensic and legal support that the United States could provide, department officials said.
“The United States is sending an unmistakable message” to those who have committed atrocities, Mr. Garland said: “There is no place to hide.”
After the meeting, Mr. Garland said he was tapping Eli Rosenbaum, the former director of the Justice Department’s Office of Special Investigations, to create a war crimes accountability team that would work with Ukraine and international law enforcement groups.
Mr. Rosenbaum, 67, is best known for his work for the World Jewish Congress in the 1980s investigating the hidden history of Kurt Waldheim, a former United Nations secretary general whose army unit was implicated in war crimes against Jews and Yugoslavian partisans during World War II.
In the department’s criminal division, Mr. Rosenbaum has also been instrumental in the prosecution and deportation of Nazis living in the United States and Jews who committed atrocities against their own people in concentration camps. In recent years, his portfolio has taken on a broader mission, as former Nazis die off, and now includes a wider array of human rights cases, at home and abroad.
The new team will include Justice Department staff members and outside experts. In addition to offering assistance to Ukrainian officials, the department said in a statement that Mr. Rosenbaum would investigate “potential war crimes over which the U.S. possesses jurisdiction, such as the killing and wounding of U.S. journalists covering the unprovoked Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
The department is also assigning additional personnel to expand its work with Ukraine and other partners to counter Russian use of illicit financial methods to evade international sanctions — detailing a Justice Department expert to advise Ukraine on fighting kleptocracy, corruption and money laundering, officials said.
“We will pursue every avenue available to make sure that those who are responsible for these atrocities are held accountable,” added Mr. Garland.
“We’ve seen and have determined that a number of war crimes have been committed by Russia’s forces,” Beth Van Schaack, the State Department’s ambassador at large for global criminal justice, said at a briefing in Washington last week.
“What we are seeing is not the results of a rogue unit,” she added, “but rather a pattern and practice across all the areas in which Russia’s forces are engaged.”

On the evening of October 24, 1978, President Jimmy Carter sat up straight behind the Resolute desk in the Oval Office, interlocked his hands, and began reading from the prepared remarks laid out in front of him. “I want to have a frank talk with you tonight about our most serious domestic problem,” Carter told the camera. “That problem is inflation.”

says "One sign the Russian economy remains under severe pressure is that inflation in Russia is more than double the rate in the U.S." Double is for one month only, which doesn't tell much about Russia. How much has the Consumer Price Index changed over the Putin Era, going back to 2000? If the price was 100 in 2000, it is now 798 in 2022 for Russians. It is 172 in 2022 for Americans. Here is the Consumer Price Index for Russia (Red line) and America (Blue line):

Quote:Knowing a fact doesn't mean understanding it. Signym bragged that Ukraine has already lost. But Signym bragged about Russia's victory over Germany. Germany had 6.9 million dead and Russia had 27 million dead, yet Signym could not understand that killing 1 German by dropping 4 dead Russians on top was not proof of Russia's military superiority. It was proof that Russia places a very low value, perhaps even zero, on Russian lives. And Russia continues to prove their value has remained close to zero since May 7, 1945. Maybe Russia will achieve victory against Ukraine the same way as against Germany, by burying each dead Ukrainian under four dead Russians. That strategy could work since Russians outnumber Ukrainians 142,320,790 (July 2021 est.) to 43,745,640 (July 2021 est.)

Putin’s justification: “In order to claim some kind of leadership – I am not even talking about global leadership, I mean leadership in any area – any country, any people, any ethnic group should ensure their sovereignty. Because there is no in-between, no intermediate state: either a country is sovereign, or it is a colony, no matter what the colonies are called.”
The implication is clear: there are two categories of state. The sovereign and the conquered. In Putin’s view, Ukraine falls into the latter category.
From Russian official statements in the last months, Finland, the Baltic states and Europe itself fall into the latter category. The Conqueror must have the strongest currency in the world.

Putin warned the West that he would strike new targets in Ukraine after the U.S. announced the transfer of four HIMARS to Ukraine.
On Wednesday, deputy chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee Yuri Shvytkin took things a step further, saying that the transfer of HIMARS to Ukraine "underlines the step-by-step movement towards a third world war on the part of the United States."
"You need to understand that we must respond harshly. In my opinion, today the reaction should also take place in those countries that supply weapons. And not just to destroy infrastructure and so on, but I think the main decision-making center is the US Embassy," Shvytkin told the Russian news outlet Lenta.ru. "I think that sooner or later this will become a target for the armed forces of Russia."
Rebekah Koffler, author of "Putin's Playbook: Russia's Secret Plan to Defeat America," said "This would be a message to the US to stop providing weaponry to Ukraine. But it’s all risky and the threshold is very high for this decision."

Presumably, Putin won't bomb the White House or the World Trade Center, but there is nothing stopping him except his own imagination. The sky is open to everything, including cruise missiles fired from Russian submarines offshore from DC and Manhattan.
Ukraine received four HIMARS on Thursday after the U.S. trained forces on how to use them. Four more HIMARS were also announced this week as part of the more than $6 billion in military aid that the U.S. has provided for the country over the last four months.

Japan went on a murder-rampage in July 7, 1937. Germany in September 1, 1939. President Roosevelt wanted those countries stopped but the Republican and Dixiecrat Senators called FDR a warmonger until Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, 1941. FDR could have stopped Japan and Germany in only a year's fighting, but Republican and Dixiecrat Senators would let those separate wars blossom into the biggest fire fight in Earth's history because the Senators would not vote for a declaration of war.
Now that I think of it, US Senators haven't voted for a declaration of war in 80 years. A majority of Senators are too irresponsible to make a decision about war or anything of substance, which is why the Senate has been malfunctioning for 80 years and getting worse and worse as the Senate has filled up with more and more elderly folk.
