U.S. prosecutors seize properties, charge Russian on Ukraine invasion anniversary

NEW YORK (Reuters) -U.S. prosecutors on Friday said they were seeking to forfeit six properties in New York and Florida allegedly belonging to a sanctioned Russian oligarch, and separately charged a Russian national with illegally exporting counterintelligence equipment

The announcements came on the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which Moscow calls a "special military operation." The Department of Justice has sought to use asset seizures and criminal charges to squeeze business executives aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin to press him to stop the war.

"For as long as it takes, the Department of Justice will continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our Ukrainian and international partners in defense of justice and the rule of law," U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

A close Russian ally is messing with the legendary spaceport it leases to the Kremlin, seizing assets over an unpaid debt

Kazakhstan impounded Russian equipment at the Baikonur space base over a feud with the Kremlin.

Kazakh authorities say Russia companies never paid huge fines, leading it to impound equipment there.

Baikonur is a source of pride for Moscow, from which the Soviet Union sent the first man to space.

Russia's currency hits the lowest level since the early weeks of the war in Ukraine

LONDON (AP) — The Russian ruble has reached its lowest value since the early weeks of the war in Ukraine as Moscow increases military spending and Western sanctions weigh on its energy exports.

On Monday, the Russian currency passed 101 rubles to the dollar, continuing a more than 25% decline in its value since the beginning of the year and hitting the lowest level in almost 17 months.

President Vladimir Putin’s economic adviser, Maksim Oreshkin, on Monday blamed the weak ruble on “loose monetary policy” in an op-ed for state news agency Tass. He said a strong ruble is in the interest of the Russian economy and that a weak currency “complicates economic restructuring and negatively affects people’s real incomes.”

He believes, or thinks he believes in the organization of society on the basis of voluntary cooperation. A society without political institutions or hierarchical government. He is clueless to what keeps our society running to the extent it does. It is the institutions he criticizes that allow for his very existence.

There are many places on the planet where he could live out his beliefs. Places where governments cannot easily reach him but he is a coward so he’d never go. Russia's central bank makes huge interest rate hike to try to prop up falling ruble

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Russia’s central bank made a big interest rate hike Tuesday, an emergency move designed to fight inflation and strengthen the ruble after the country's currency reached its lowest value since early in the war with Ukraine.

The ruble has lost more than a third of its value since the beginning of the year as Moscow increases military spending and Western sanctions weigh on its income from energy shipments. The flagging currency does not mean the Russian economy is in freefall — though it is facing challenges, including rising prices for households and businesses, according to analysts who study Russia.

My parents' religion has an explanation for what has gone wrong with people like 6ix, Signym, Trump, and Putin. I'm not a member of that religion, but I can still see that the explanation usefully describes the world of such sinful people as 6ix. Here it is in purified abstract form without a religious paint job or coating:

How America Got Mean, August 14, 2023, 6 AM ET, https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2023/09/us-culture-moral-
education-formation/674765
/

In a culture devoid of moral education, generations are growing up in a morally inarticulate, self-referential world.

The Notre Dame sociologist Christian Smith and a team of researchers asked young adults across the country in 2008 about their moral lives. One of their findings was that the interviewees had not given the subject of morality much thought. “I’ve never had to make a decision about what’s right and what’s wrong,” one young adult told the researchers. “My teachers avoid controversies like that like the plague,” many teenagers said.

The moral instincts that Smith observed in his sample fell into the pattern that the philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre called “emotivism”: Whatever feels good to me is moral. “I would probably do what would make me happy” in any given situation, one of the interviewees declared. “Because it’s me in the long run.” As another put it, “If you’re okay with it morally, as long as you’re not getting caught, then it’s not really against your morals, is it?” Smith and his colleagues emphasized that the interviewees were not bad people but, because they were living “in morally very thin or spotty worlds,” they had never been given a moral vocabulary or learned moral skills.

Most of us who noticed the process of de-moralization as it was occurring thought a bland moral relativism and empty consumerism would be the result: You do you and I’ll do me. That’s not what happened.

“Moral communities are fragile things, hard to build and easy to destroy,” the psychologist Jonathan Haidt writes in The Righteous Mind. When you are raised in a culture without ethical structure, you become internally fragile. You have no moral compass to give you direction, no permanent ideals to which you can swear ultimate allegiance. “He who has a why to live for can bear with almost any how,” the psychiatrist (and Holocaust survivor) Viktor Frankl wrote, interpreting a famous Nietzsche saying. Those without a why fall apart when the storms hit. They begin to suffer from that feeling of moral emptiness that Émile Durkheim called “anomie.”

Putin Slams Dollar Dominance At BRICS Summit, Calls For Local Currency Trade

Russian President Vladimir Putin railed against dollar dominance and Western sanctions in a prerecorded speech at the BRICS summit. Putin, unable to attend in person due to potential arrest, called for increased use of local currencies for trade.

Putin criticized the trade restrictions placed on Russia over the Ukraine war as illegitimate. He stated these actions trample upon basic norms and rules of free trade, Business Insider reported.

Putin also emphasized the “objective, irreversible process of de-dollarization” of economic ties, adding that summit participants would discuss issues and mechanisms related to local currency trade.

Large multinational companies are fleeing Russia, joining a large swath of the international community in moving to isolate the nation in response to its brutal invasion of Ukraine.

Oil and gas giants BP and Shell announced they are leaving Russia after spending decades making investments worth billions of dollars in the country, while several U.S. companies are halting all shipments to Russia.

The exodus is expected to continue as more businesses weigh the reputational and financial risks of doing business with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Experts say that if energy firms are willing to forfeit huge sums by pulling out of Russia, industries with much less to lose will soon follow suit.

“I think corporate executives, in addition to considering political risk, are genuinely outraged by what Russia has done,” said Bill Reinsch, the Scholl chair in international business at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, adding that he is surprised by just how quickly companies have made the call to leave Russia.

These decisions are driven in part by enormous public pressure to disown the Russian government and also by the sweeping sanctions imposed by the U.S. and its allies that severely complicate companies’ ability to do business with Russian entities.

Shell on Monday said that it will abandon stakes in Russian state-owned energy projects that are worth roughly $3 billion. The Dutch company noted that the move will hurt the value of its assets and “lead to impairments.”

"We are shocked by the loss of life in Ukraine, which we deplore, resulting from a senseless act of military aggression which threatens European security," Shell CEO Ben van Beurden said in a statement.

That announcement came after BP, a longtime defender of Putin, said it would desert its 20 percent stake in Russian state-owned energy firm Rosneft. The move could cost BP as much as $25 billion if the oil giant is forced to write off the investment, as selling it could prove difficult under strict sanctions.

“Russia’s attack on Ukraine is an act of aggression which is having tragic consequences across the region,” BP Chairman Helge Lund said in a statement. “BP has operated in Russia for over 30 years, working with brilliant Russian colleagues. However, this military action represents a fundamental change.”

As Russia escalates its attacks on Ukraine, it’s becoming increasingly isolated from the rest of the world. American shipping companies FedEx and UPS said they would temporarily suspend all shipments to both countries, while Germany’s DHL said it would pause some services to Russia and Ukraine, citing security concerns.

Ocean carrier Maersk said Monday that it might suspend shipments to and from Russia, a move that would further cut the nation off from international trade. The Danish shipping giant said that it was monitoring the security situation in Ukraine and “preparing to comply with the ever-evolving sanctions and restrictions imposed against Russia.”

Companies that haven’t fled are likely evaluating how to navigate complex sanctions and exploring whether continuing business with Russia is worth the regulatory challenges.

In response to the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. and its allies froze roughly $630 billion in Russian central bank assets being held abroad, blocked fundraising for Russian state-owned entities and cut some Russian banks out of the SWIFT international payments system. The U.S. blocked Russian state-owned banks from accessing the U.S. dollar and imposed export controls that prevent Russia from obtaining computer chips and other technologies.

In just a matter of days, the sanctions have brought the Russian economy to the brink of collapse. The Russian ruble was worth less than 1 cent as of Monday afternoon, giving

These sanctions are going to last long after they are lifted. Russia will never be the same. Most who will suffer have nothing to do with Putins' decisions yet without sanctions of this magnitude war is the only option left. It may come to that yet. Putin cannot be allowed to march through Europe. There are no winners here. Only those who will suffer because a mad man is running Russia.

Sanctions deflate prices and the Kremlin's budget revenue

Bloomberg concludes that the primary reason for the difference is an 11 percent increase in expenditures and a 24 percent decrease in budget revenue from oil and gas taxes. Notwithstanding this decline, these sources still comprise one-third of the Kremlin's revenue.

Oil revenue also fell due to a 17 percent downturn in oil prices in 2023. Western sanctions, applied in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, had a significant influence as well.
Revenue from the export of Russian gas also diminished. The Kremlin's decision to halt most of the supply to Europe in 2023 led to a 65 percent decline in budget revenue from export duties on gas, equivalent to roughly 6.9 billion US dollars, Bloomberg reports. It's worth noting that Russia only delivers gas via one pipeline in Ukraine – TurkStream.

Moreover, the International Energy Agency assesses that domestic pipeline gas exports to the European Union fell by 65 percent in 2023. The mild winter weather and, thus, the reduced demand played a part in this drop.

How Russia Won the Sanctions War With the West | Opinion
Jan 17, 2024

It is now abundantly clear that Russia has defeated the Western sanctions regime that was intended to cripple its economy and force its withdrawal from Ukraine. Instead of collapsing, the Russian economy is growing rapidly. Russia's GDP grew by an impressive 5.5 percent in the third quarter of 2023. Final figures for the year are not yet in, but Russian GDP growth for all of 2023 should exceed 3 percent. Ironically, the Russians are doing rather better than those who imposed sanctions on them. In 2023, the U.S. economy grew by 2.4 percent while the German economy shrank, and the EU as a whole grew by less than 1 percent. Instead of withdrawing from Ukraine, Russia has increased the size of its invasion force from 190,000 troops in February 2022 to more than 600,000 today.

Between February 2022 and February 2023, Western countries imposed on Russia the most extensive sanctions regime seen since World War II. In all, several thousand sanctions on Russian individuals, businesses, and government institutions caused only a mild recession in 2022 which the Russians quickly turned around. How did they do it? Very simply. The Russians have a lot of gold, grain, oil, and friends, all of which they used effectively to defeat the sanctions. Any realistic war game could have easily predicted all of this.

And yet, neocons failed to notice the little speed bump on their road to World Domination?

In March of 2022, G7 member states froze $300 billion in Russian Central Bank reserves, about half of Russia's foreign currency reserves at the time. This was supposed to "turn the ruble into rubble." It did not. Instead, the Russian Central bank moved very quickly to peg the ruble to gold and backed this up with its massive gold reserves and production capacity. The peg was in force for barely three months, but this bought Moscow time to re-orient its energy trade away from Europe and adjust its overall economy to the sanctions.

Life Goes on in Russia
Almost immediately, Russia began to shift its energy trade toward China and India by offering discounts. Today, 90 percent of its crude oil exports go to these two nations. Europe, which used to receive 40 percent of Russian crude oil exports, now receives only 4 percent to 5 percent. To evade Western shipping and insurance sanctions, the Russians have assembled an enormous "shadow fleet" of oil tankers, buying and leasing hundreds of vessels that did not comply with sanctions. According to the International Energy Agency, Russia currently exports 7.5 million barrels of oil per day, only slightly less than Saudi Arabia.

Then the Russians got creative in their sanctions-busting by recruiting friends like Iran, Turkey, China, North Korea, and Kyrgyzstan to help transship high tech goods like microchips, as well as drones and automobiles. For example, imports of Western cars and parts to Kyrgyzstan rose by an amazing 5,500 percent in the first nine months of 2023.

Russia remains the world's largest producer of natural diamonds and a significant diamond exporter. Waves of sanctions have had only a limited effect on its diamond production and revenues. Finally, since the collapse of the Soviet Union's collective farm system, Russia has become the world's largest wheat exporter. Despite Western sanctions, Russia's share of global wheat exports actually increased over the past two years. Thanks to global warming, Russia has just had another bumper grain harvest and hopes for even more grain as Siberia warms. Putin does not care about polar bears. He has plenty.

NATO's wonder-weapons like HIMARS and Leopard tanks failed to fuel an effective Ukrainian counter-offensive. Diplomacy

Russia has started WW3 and it will get a similar burst of growth just the same as the USA got in WW2, at least until NATO or Ukraine starts a wholesale destruction of Russian manufacturing. Russia didn't prosper during WW2 because, you know, Nazis were very aware that destroying Russian cities reduces GDP. Germans seem to have forgotten how economies still work the same in 2024. No, Signym, Russia cannot stop that destruction unless it wants to be nuked. At the moment only Ukraine is even halfheartedly trying to destroy Russia's GDP, but Russia has gone full speed destroying Ukraine's.

Diplomacy

Neocons don't do "diplomacy". They break treaties, agreements, and contracts; torpedo peace talks

Nope; Biden will declare an emergency, accept the Senate's version of the border bill and bypass the House. This bill has money allocated for Ukraine, Israel and Twain.

While this is happening, some republicans will try and remove the speaker again.

There's been a lot of movement in Turkey's neck of the woods, so the Turks have had to change their stance on several issues. Given Turkey's strategic positioning and importance, expect huge regional implications.

Democrats do love them some unconstitutional wars.

They just can't seem to get around to declaring an emergency for the invasion at our own border though.

They'll be happy spending hundreds of billions of dollars housing, feeding and giving healthcare and school to illegal alien invaders while telling us that Social Security is going to fail before we retire.

It's called dentures, dummy. I eat my food just fine and you don't hear me ever complaining about it.

I never had a cavity either. It wasn't the teeth that rotted out, but the jawbone holding them in that disappeared.

Western tanker owners have been spooked by U.S. sanctions targeting Russian oil sales, putting pressure on Moscow's "shadow fleet" of ships transporting the country's key energy export since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Measures to choke off one of Russia's main export revenue generators funding the war started by Russian President Vladimir Putin included the G7, the EU and Australia imposing a price cap; it bans firms from insuring, financing, and shipping Russian seaborne oil exports sold above $60 a barrel.

However, Russia has traded oil using a shadow fleet in which the ships' ownership is reorganized, often through shell companies in the Middle East, to obscure their connections to Moscow. The amount of shadow vessels leaving Russia rose from 13 percent in February 2022 to 42 percent by mid-2023.
Bloomberg reported that, in January, there had been a fivefold increase in ships sailing under the flag of Gabon to 100—up from just 20 in February 2023, citing data from Windward AI.

The predictive intelligence company noted flags such as Liberia and St. Kitts and Nevis had been heavily targeted by regulators.

"The move to Gabon by operators shipping sanctioned oil was precipitated partly by the U.S. authorities putting pressure on the St Kitts and Nevis registry earlier last year," Septimus Knox, director, disputes and investigation at geopolitical and cyber risk consultancy S-RM, told Newsweek on Tuesday.

Russia's Space Agency Forced to Sell Off Assets as Sanctions Take Toll

Russia's Roscosmos space agency plans to sell off assets worth more than 11.4 billion rubles ($124 million) as sanctions imposed by the West over President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine continue to take a toll, local media has reported.

A representative of the company told Russian news outlet RBC that the decision was made after Roscosmos lost almost 80 percent of its export income after losing orders and key partners due to the war in Ukraine. This year, it intends to sell its "non-core" assets—more than 150 items including boarding houses and former sanatoriums, land and property complexes, and recreation centers.

Russia Hit By Tsunami of Bankruptcies

Russia has seen a sharp spike in corporate bankruptcies, according to a report that comes as Vladimir Putin looks to tax companies more to pay for his social program and the sanctions-hit economy continues to face turbulence.

The business newspaper Kommersant reported that in the first two months of 2024, corporate bankruptcies had increased by more than a half compared with the same period last year—and experts predicted an increase in insolvencies in future.

No, Russia Is Not Winning

Two years after Russia launched its full-scale war of aggression, Ukraine is still holding the line militarily, and even beginning to recover economically. As much as Vladimir Putin wants the world to think he has shielded the Russian economy from blowback, recent financial and economic developments suggest otherwise.

Russia’s economy has been showing signs of strain. A report from the US Treasury Department finds that Russia’s economy is 5% smaller than it would have been if President Vladimir Putin had not invaded Ukraine.

On Russia’s side, most of the economic losses are the result of its own mismanagement and Western sanctions. Analysts note that, due to military casualties and the exodus of individuals fleeing conscription, Russia faces a “demographic crisis.”

Yuriy Gorodnichenko is Professor of Economics at the University of California, Berkeley.

Ukraine Closing In on Russian Money Bonanza

International momentum on both sides of the Atlantic is building for Ukraine to benefit from Russian assets frozen due to Vladimir Putin's full-scale invasion.

The Restoring Justice for Ukraine conference in The Hague on Tuesday saw 44 countries back a special tribunal to address Moscow's ongoing aggression and support a move for "immobilized Russian sovereign assets" to be used to help rebuild the war-torn country.

Major Russian oil refinery shuts down following Orsk dam burst

The failure was attributed to improper maintenance of the hydraulic structure, leading to the opening of a criminal investigation by the regional prosecutor’s office.

Situated near Russia’s border with Kazakhstan, the city of Orsk has drawn attention from Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who labeled the flooding as one of Kazakhstan’s most significant natural disasters in 80 years.
