Off in a bit to get a couple of things done. Think it's suppose to be dry today. Might have to go the cardiologists office to make an appointment as I spent 10 minutes on the phone this morning trying to get them. Can't leave a voice mail as I am not sure when I will be back in.

Got back a while ago and it is a soggy, soggy day up here in the Northlands.

Note to self: Never use old sayings or make jokes based on pop culture from when I was a kid. Ugh! I am surrounded by rotten kids.

The examples from today as the young woman was looking for the rest of my seizure med in a draw. I said it wasn't "a fit day out for man nor beast. Blank look.

Told the boss what is happening and he said getting double check was a good idea and I agreed with him. Just tired of being poked and prodded at. He thought that was funny. As I was leaving, I said, "Maybe they will find that my heart is 3x too big."
Pharmacist in training started to say what that was medically. I had to explain it was joke. Blank faces again. Then I said you know the Grinch. He laughed then and I left.

Like I said. Rotten kids.

Can you open the book directly from your USB stick now?

If so, you can now open that book from any laptop or PC that you put it in that has Office installed.

Even if you don't have office installed and one day you're in a position where you'd need to pay for a subscription version of Word in the future, you can always easily open it up in Google Docs for free with a gmail account. It would take a little bit for you to get used to the differences there, but at least for now there are free alternatives if this ever becomes an issue.

As for the photos, I would first "Create New Folder" on the USB stick and name it something like "Images" or "Photos" before you copied all of your photos to the drive, just to make certain you're not dumping everything just on the highest folder in the tree. If you had a ton of photos you were moving and you just move them to the highest level of the drive which is where I assume your book now is, you're going to kind of bury your book under the pictures.

It would still be there alphabetically (or any other way you sorted your files), but you'd probably have to dig for it any time you wanted to pull it up, or at least use the search function to narrow down the results. That could get annoying for you after a while. (And though it's not really hard to fix, I think it would be fairly complex to explain how to do it online to you, and with a clean drive with just your book on it we don't need to muck it up, right?)

You can even do things like have a folder called "Book", and then have a sub-folder called "Notes" if you added things or came across things that are giving you inspiration to write something further at one point that you didn't want to lose. With these nested sub-folders, you can really do a good job of keeping your Book stuff separate from your Images.

And like I said before, if you ever got into downloading some music that you aren't able to find in physical media, you have TONS of room on that stick for hundreds if not over 1,000 songs too, so you can also make a "Music" folder to save any music files to as well. It's a very, very useful little piece of tech for the relatively low price.

So, lots of water said the pharmacist and she didn't say this but heat for my back. Too much coughing and ow!. I do have cough drop I can use too.

Lousy morning at mah jong SIX. Had 1 decent hand and that was first one. Winds & dragons but it only netted me a score 780. So yeah not good. Also had to play teacher to three other people as the boss is away and I am one of the only other players who know how to count. Ugh!
Also senior's centre put the tv back into the lunch area. It's so anyone who wants to watch the Olympics can.

That was nice of them to put the TV in there. You watch any of the Olympics in there yourself?

Heh... You've got that frustration and competitive edge my grandma and her sister did with their Scrabble games. Not only did they delight in calling each other out for using a word that was spelled wrong or wasn't actually in the dictionary and challenging each other or anybody they played with, but that extended to me when I was trying to play them when I was 8 or 9 years old. They weren't going to hold any punches for the kid. I got to see a side of both of them I'd never have seen if I didn't play Scrabble with 'em.

Learning a lot about file sharing in Linux because of the project.

You're able to set up "Shortcut" equivalents there that make the MS counterparts pale by comparison. They're almost too good because you really have to make sure you remember what you're crossing between drives and where, because you're able to do it in such a way where you can't even tell in Windows Explorer that files in the same folder are coming from two completely separate drives without looking at file/folder properties. They blend seemlessly.

This has allowed me to blend real files right in with dummy representative files I had created to save space in the primary without much work at all, since these Linux shortcuts not only stand in for them, but represent actual media from alternative sources that don't bog down the main.

I know that some of this was possible all the way back in 2017-2018, but not all of it. The network upgrades have been supurb since then. I'm currently doing work with 3 different computers running 3 different OS's, and there's no hangups viewing these shared folders from any OS without any limitations or needing to enter a password in Linux every time I mess with one remotely.

I've even set up a few temporary shares that not only allow me to do work on the files hosted on the Linux computer in Windows where I feel much more comfortable working with massive projects like this, but it also allows me to offload quite a bit of behind the scenes work that I've been doing that have been bogging down my work speed as they ran on the main until yesterday. I'll soon be putting a very large portion through a 2-pass process that is likely to take about 2-3 days for each process. But now I can set it and forget it, do them all at one time instead of only 100 files or so at a, and on a remote computer that wasn't seeing any CPU usage and can do all the heavy lifting while I'm doing literally anything else.

Cool stuff.

It was nice. I did watch some over lunch. Curling. China vs the UK. Women's team. Don't know who was winning as I don't understand curling and I don't how they count points.

I can get competitive at times. And very frustrated when playing teacher. I was suppose to be sitting at another table when I got moved to the table with the three players who have a hard time counting. They start to count and I have to stop them because they are doing it wrong and so Arrrrggghhh! And since all three had different hands, I had to help one lady on my right and the one in the middle then the one on my left.

My dad had far more patience when teaching me to play cribbage and I would have been around your age when I learned bout 8 or 9. Don't remember much any more but the basic counting and moving the pegs on the board for your count.

Haha...

I couldn't explain any scoring to you in Curling, but if I watched it for a few hours I'd probably get a majority of it and would be able to. The first and last time I watched it was the 2006 season, and it instantly became my favorite winter sport. I'm glad to see its staying power, and not really surprised to see it.

It's just got that "something"...

I know the feeling all too well. I have to let it be known pretty early on at my jobs that I'm not the guy who's time they'll be wasting to train other people. Most of them are dumb, and at least 2/3rds of them never even last a month before quitting anyway. To me they're just dead weight, but at the end of the day these are jobs that don't matter anyhow. Just give me my difficult corner and give me more work than you'll expect me to do by the end of the night. Stay out of my way, keep other people out of my eyesight so I don't see them fucking around on their cell phones all night while I bust my ass and I'll make you look good.

And don't ask me to train anybody. Even though this is a bullshit job, my brain over-processed all of it and half of the work I do I couldn't even explain to the average person who doesn't have the ability to think about 30 things at one time, and constantly move them around as external stimuli and events make me change how and why and in what order the puzzle pieces need to be solved.

Just ask the guy or gal who you think is the 2nd best on the shift to do all the training and leave me out of it, thank you very much.

Yeah. That's cool. Good dads are cool. I'm glad my step-brother and half-brother were able to have mine at least, and that gift wasn't completely wasted.

Sounds like yours taught you a lot of good lessons. Patience is a great one...

Then you are probably a head of me when it comes to curling. About all I know is that sport comes from Scotland and has been around a fair amount of time. That and it is played on ice. The things they hurl down the ice are called "rocks" and the sweeping I think is suppose to slow them down. The bulls eye on the ice makes me think of darts and I knew that the different rings on a dart board make different scores.

These are women who are far older than me and I can't tell if they really don't know how to count or what. I don't volunteer but when someone else is in charge gotta do what the boss says.

Teaching anyone over the age of 20 and just no. But I am good with teaching children. Starting from 1 and on up.

My every day after school was not seeing my friends because I had two younger brothers I had to watch for 3 or 4 hours after school (including one who was still heavily disabled) every day until my mom and step-dad got back home from their miserable jobs in Downtown Chicago after fighting the rush-hour traffic, and then being forced to sit at a dinner table who's every conversation every night was dominated by my mom bitching about how awful her job was and how/why she hated everyone she worked for and worked with.

Everything all around me was a fight growing up. I'm afraid that I wouldn't even recognize what just going with the flow even looked like if I saw it.

I remember a few years back my dental hygienist telling me what a great time she and her husband and kids were having during lock-downs, and her even having the pleasure of her oldest college student son being at home and the night's they'd spend watching movies and playing board games together and the like.

What a great picture she painted. Sounds like a little slice of heaven.

I just laughed and told her that if Covid lock-downs happened when I was that age, at least one of us would have not survived being confined to that house with each other for 2 years. Not a chance.

No worries. I managed to get that through before the other troubles.

My dad just didn't want me to get hurt out on the ice. I did fall down but I didn't hurt myself at least. One lesson he walked out on to the ice to help me and the teacher had to ask him not to do that. And he wasn't in skates just his regular shoes.

I could do that as I got older on ice that forms when the temperatures go real low and if there is a big puddle it completely freezes. Local 7-11 back when I was in high school had a big puddle freeze over in the parking lot. I was with a group of friends going there for lunch and forgot what my dad had taught. I went down and landed on my back. Ow! That hurt for sure. Everyone wanted to help me but I said no. They just stood back and watched me get to my feet and carefully finish walking across the lot. Same thing coming out of the store after eating. I got across the ice with no problem.

That is a lot to put on a kid and not right. I didn't see much of my friends in elementary school only because we were out in the sticks and a kid could get by a car. No street lights. And lots of crows around. Had one fly right into my face on my way to school. Didn't hurt me but sure scared the beejezzers out of me. My dad figured it must have been a pet and got away. I hated crows for a long time after that. Once I got in it was homework. That was my dad's rule and also I had to walk my little brother home. Both my parents where home as they we retired. I got picked on because my mum and dad were older than everyone else's.

Dinner was for eating, talking and watching the supper time news.

That was a lovely picture she painted for sure. My lock-down was boring as he double toothpicks for sure.

My mum would have gone batty for sure being inside all the time.

Oh... I think the lesson was a lot deeper than that, even if you don't realize it yourself. Kid's are physically resilient. He probably knew if you fell and busted your ass that you'd be crying and remember that bad experience, but he also knew you would have gotten back up, healed really quick at that age, and tried even harder the next time you went out on the ice.

I'm quite sure you took the lesson he was really imparting and as he intended it too, even if you were too young to realize it at the time he gave you the advice. I don't know you in person, so even though it's impossible to truly judge anyone's character, being online makes it all that much harder to do, but you got the lesson.

Anybody who ever tells you that they've achieved perfect balance is a liar or a charlatan. And I know that you have also mentioned your own struggle with and desire for balance in life. But from the outside looking in, me to you, Brenda, I have to say that you are the most even-keel personality that I've ever had any dialog with online in my life.

To emphasize my point... Do you remember what happened next? After the teacher came on the scene and asked him to get off the ice?

I'm 99.9999% sure that he apologized, and got off the ice, while still making sure you heard his voice and that he was there and everything was going to be fine. I don't know how old you were when this memory happened, but I've seen enough kids in my family have a fall or somehow otherwise kinda-sorta bump themselves and immediately go to crying because they know it will get them attention. But that wasn't you. You just right back up, just like he already knew you would.

And while you were busy doing that, he was busy teaching you another lesson on not being a hothead and realizing where he was and what he was doing when your teacher snapped him out of his instinctual need to rush to save the day when he already knew is girl was fine and the teacher could sort it out...

Am I warm?????

That's what I mean too... You learned some good lessons early on. Probably a little too independent in the end, but I can only say that because I know what I am and I can sense these things about other people. I know you've seen some shit in your life, Brenda. But even if you hadn't shared as much of your own history here as you have over the years I'd still sense it on you. You're kind of a badass, but you'd never even admit to that let alone going around and bragging to everyone in real life or online that you were. A lot of people talk everyday about "independence" and "being independent", but hardly any of them really walk the walk.

Your old man really did teach you to stand on your own somewhere along the line. He knew and/or dreamed that there would be a time where you wouldn't need to. But he didn't ever want to leave you unprepared for a potential future where you did need to manage things on your own.

Oh hey, SIX ...having scrolled up ... No worries.
I just got busy. Well, as busy as an old lady has energy for!

I'm finally getting to bed consistently around 0100. I alway wake up at stupid o'clock but I just roll with it, drink a half cup of coffee with milk and sugar, play computer games for a bit and dive back into bed. Up at 10, coffee, kitchen chores, taking the dog out to the backyard with me so she can be a dog and I can do 30 minutes or so of yardwork.... and it just goes on from there!

Cooking and dishes always features, as does family time watching TV. Sometimes Dr appts, sometimes front yard yardwork, sometimes catching up on legal or budgeting and stuff, housecleaning, planning the new landscape or bathroom remodel (I have a hard time visualizing ... it takes me forever!), sometimes decluttering... There's always something. I'm usually tired at the end of the day but then - I sleep well!

Oh... hey...

I found out that my aunt got scammed with a medicare fraud scheme. She and my dad's brother were on a Cobra plan until they both got old enough to get on it, and I don't know the whole story or what happened, or whose advice they followed, but ultimately she missed out on the sign-up period because of this after paying two months of premiums to a total scam, and last update I heard things were not going well.

This comes while I'm starting to see YouTubers all over advertise for some company I think is called Chapter Medicare. I'm not saying that they're related at all, but I'm getting a little worried about that outfit because I see their ads popping up all over the place as direct sponsorship ad reads for a lot of content creators out there and I'm just a little concerned about the legitimacy of it.

I can only imagine how much they're paying for these sponsorships since they are popping up like weeds everywhere. Seems odd for a company that makes claims that their help is "free" and how much they care, while hitting all those buzz words that put people's guard down. Everyone's got to remember that the advertizers on YT don't need to adhere to FCC regulations or at the end of the day are really ever going to be held accountable for any deception they pull off. At least up until now, I think SBF and his crypto-empire is the only one who ever got more than a slap on the wrist, or maybe shut down at worst. I think SBF is probably the only advertiser on YouTube that has ever gone to prison for their deception, and with how many people from foreign nations can make ads and use AI to make them even better, you just really have to keep a sharp focus on that stuff since it just becomes more and more prevalent the longer we let these foreign scammers get away with making $10's of Billions off of US/UK and Canadian seniors every year.

I'm going to ask my old man if he can get me more information about what happened.

Just be careful out there.

I know Brenda's out in Canada and probably doesn't have to worry about any health insurance coverage type of stuff, but everyone just watch your backs.

OMG that's terrible, but I can sure see how that would happen. Every end of year we get get blizzarded with ads for this and that 'Medicare Advantage Plan', many from companies I never heard of, some claiming to be nonprofit.

I read an interesting article about all the scams just for seniors, and the older you get, the more there are. Some of them perpetrated by family members, caregivers, or trusted family lawyers, accountants, or trustees.

Damn, but ya gotta keep your head on a swivel!

Got back in the rain.

Ran into the lady who used to come in and look after my mum. She is fine and all her children are. But her husband has single cell lung cancer. They aren't sure how long he had before the outside symptoms started showing like swelling and bumps on neck. He's had an MRI done on his brain to make it hasn't gone that far and thank goodness it hasn't. He's been CT scanned as well. He's four rounds of I think she said chemo and now they are trying immune therapy. Doctors aren't sure about anything. Her adult daughter has been bringing over herbs and such that are suppose to be good for cancer patients and better foods for her father.

I still have this stupid cough so she had to back away from me and I totally understood. We exchanged email addresses again.

It was so good to see her but not good news. Said she's been the mall a couple of times but we must have missed each other.

It's good that you ran into your mom's carer, BRENDA. But, like you said, not great news. Still, they have those biologics - most likely Monoclonal AntiBodies, "mabs"- that do a great job attacking any cells that chemo may have missed. And altho they aren't without side effects, they're a lot easier on the system than chemo! And then there's radiation, so his situation is not without hope. Fingers crossed that he goes into remission.

*****

A week ago we were sweltering at 90F, and yesterday's rainstorm was just a hope on the meteorological horizon.

Yesterday we got a lot more than predicted! Up until then, the storm was what I call "The Great Disappearing Rainstorm"

First prediction in the 10-day forecast: It's coming! It's gonna be BIG! Three and a half inches in four days!
Then: Three inches in four days!
Then: The storm broke into three bands! Two inches in two days and showers on the fourth.
Then: would you believe two inches in two days.

But the storm, instead of partially evaporating, roared in. Downpours! Tornado warnings! Flash flood warnings! Thunderstorms!

My rain gage overflowed, I have no idea how much rain we actually got, but for a while the backyard was boggy and the street was running full. Crazy weather!

The storm hit pretty much the full coast of California. Good thing too because the Sierra snowpack was looking pretty meager for this time of year.

It was good. I'm sure that I've mentioned before that she is a lovely lady and she was so good with my mum. She's finally retired because of her husband and I totally understand that. Yeah, it's been back and force to the hospital. I know about the immune therapies and I do hope they work. He was with her yesterday but quiet tired as you can imagine as he had to go upstairs to have an ultra sound done. I know how bad chemo can be on the body. Think they may even have tried radiation as well. 4 rounds of either one. Wish I remembered better. I hope it does go into remission. She is hooked up with a lot of things up here that can make it easier for her. There is a volunteer group that will take cancer patients to their appointments, so they are hooked up with that. And having worked for Fraser Health herself as a care giver she is hooking up with her former employer to get the same help that she gave to my mum.

Rain again down here where I am and more snow in the mountains which like you is a good thing. Our snow pack isn't great.

Then he listened to my lungs. All clear. Told him I sound way better than I did last week. All he could suggest is come back if the cough lasts until the beginning of March. Still a bit of crud coming up but that is good.

And I caught the kitchen drain to work again. Yay! me. Had to buy one of those plastic things that pull hair out of tub drain. Food got stuck when I thought I had gotten out. But it is fixed and that is all I care about.

Great to hear on the diagnosis, Brenda.

And good for you for fixing your own drain problem too.

I've been a little under the weather with a bug for a few days myself. Haven't felt awful or anything, but I'm either going through a pretty nasty bout of bronchitis or (hopefully not) pneumonia.

Been catching up on sleep, staying mostly away from coffee and getting as much sleep as I can for the last 48 or so hours, along with drinking plenty of water. Haven't really felt like giving your last reply to me the time I want to spend on it, but I will.

Glad to hear that medically you've got nothing major to worry about in the meantime though.

That is what I needed to hear from the doc. I was hoping that I wasn't dragging myself in too late and develop a problem. I've had pneumonia once and I do want to repeat it. But with all the coughing I was doing my diaphragm was starting to hurt.

I am so glad to have it working again. Now, I just have to get the bathtub drain working. I will get to it.

Be careful as bronchitis can be as dangerous as pneumonia. Sleep is good and plenty of water. I am sure you will be over it in a few days. Don't worry about it. Your health is more important than an answer to a post.

Yeah, like I said to him. I have a dentist appointment on Thursday and was wondering if I should go or not. If I had walked out a prescription I wouldn't go but since I didn't I think it is safe enough.

I could use one of those things to clear some drains. What's it called?

The packaging calls it "Master Plumber". Wouldn't know about the US. It's yellow and has little hooks on it that grab what is over stuck so you can pull it out.

The weather got kinda scary for a bit. Gentle rain suddenly turned into a downpour with violent wind. The avocado trees were getting blown around so badly I was afraid that with the recent heavy rain they might topple. And of course it was very tornado-ish. And just as suddenly as it started, it stopped. It'll be interesting to see how much rain came down. The previous rainstorm dumped at least 2.5".

The 10-day forecast says one more band of heavy rain, then a three day break, then more rain. Such crazy weather! But I appreciate the rain, we need it.

Still quite a bit under the weather, although it doesn't have me feeling too bad once I'm up and about. Been doing a bit of spring cleaning in between all the sleep. Hoping to have my old man over by the weekend, assuming I'm not sick anymore and don't feel like I'd be putting him in danger of getting sick.

Even though I feel lousy, just living in a cleaner house feels really nice. I really have to stop letting that get so far away from me when it gets cold outside. Two winters in a row now where I've let it get pretty rank, and I don't want to do it a 3rd time.

I'd really like to get this house ready to sell. Not that I'm ready to leave yet, and I'd really want to spend some time investigating things and picking the right time to move, but I can't do that if I'm not ready when it's time to strike.

As much as the value of my home has increased, not just due to the house prices going up everywhere, but because of how cheap I got it during the housing bubble burst of the late aughts, there are 3 potential major upgrades we may be seeing here in the near future.

The first is that the Chicago Bears might be moving to Whiting, IN, or somewhere else very close. They're done with Chicago, and JB Pritzker put the kibash on them moving to Arlington on the property they bought years ago to move (which used to be the Arlington Horse Race Tracks many moons ago). We're also supposed to be building a railroad that will connect to Chicago's railway system, and span far east of NWI. And there has been a lot of increasing murmurs of a renessance for Gary, IN and a new wave of industrial might there if what Trump has been doing ends up in more factory jobs.

If any of these three things happen soon, my value goes up quite a bit. If all 3 of them happen, I'll be sitting in a house that's worth at least half a million, if not $600k or more.

I don't want to be paying those property taxes at that point any more than I want to be stuck in this house as an old man. Need to get it all wrapped up so I can pull the trigger at just the right time, and then get myself into some small 800 sq. ft house away from any big cities and high prices, with a full basement and/or a big garage for my workshop. And a nice little 5,000 sq ft lawn that takes 15 minutes to mow instead of 2 hours.

Bathroom and kitchen are almost clean. Boy... so much nicer to live like this.

Even though I probably should have been spending most of that time working the last few days sleeping instead, trying to get rid of whatever it is I've got, I couldn't lay around and not take advantage of our 3-day 60+ degree warm spell.

I sure move a lot easier when it's 80 degrees warmer than it was just a few weeks ago.

It will be cold again by the time Dad comes by, but I'll turn the heat up a bit for him. I was thinking about having him over on Sunday, but I might do it on Friday. He's going to be down visiting my brother next week, then he's gone for almost 2 weeks on the east coast visiting one of my other brothers. I haven't seen him in a while with the crap weather and me burying myself deep in my project again, so it would be nice if I could eek out two visits before he goes.

The weather overall doesn't look too bad going forward. We've still got maybe 5 or so days in the 30's but looks like the lows don't really drop below 20 and I'm seeing mostly 40's or even 50's for the high on the extended forecast, so here's hoping I get my power bill for the month and it's not too crazy and we can do something about gas/electric prices by next winter and it's a long time before I see another $350 power bill like I had last month.

Can't be too hard on myself for not moving much, although I should have gotten checked out earlier.

Looks like I've got at walking pneumonia, Covid-19 and bronchitis all at the same time. Had me my first of a 1-week dose of Z-pack and a 6-pill start of a step-down steroid with methyl and prednisone in the name, and shit... I already feel better than I have in the last week. (I felt pretty good the day my Dad came over, but been pretty miserable ever since then). Haven't got the chest X-Ray results back yet, so hopefully it's not Cancer on top of it.

Finally went and got checked out after checking my temperature while I was having some massive chills the other night and I was 100.6, and the fever broke before I woke up that morning in sweat, only to have a fever again 2 nights later when I had the chills.

First time I was talking about chills and waking up in a sweat that wasn't diabetes related was probably almost 2 months ago now, wasn't it Sigs? When you said it might have been something sepsis related? I've probably had a fever more than half a dozen times since then without even knowing it until the other night.

I don't even know if I've ever had Covid before. Never bothered me much if I did. Wouldn't have even known I had it this time either I'm sure, if it weren't for the pneumonia at the same time.

I guess my advice to people is not to get pneumonia "vaccinations" either. I stupidly let my doctor talk me into getting a "one-time" vaccine for it and apparently that was either worthless or caused me to get pneumonia.

You okay Brenda? Don't always check in on the garden and saw that you've not posted in 3 or so days after seeing Sigs asking if you're alright. Hope you're doing better than me.

Yanno.... What the hell is wrong with the Medical "Professionals" today????

Especially on the first day, I'm on a MEGA-DOSE of 6 pills of the steroid Methylprednisolone 4MG pills (which is reduced by 1 pill per day), and about 4 hours later I notice my blood sugar had breached 150 and was still rising, despite the fact I haven't eaten any carbs since last night. So I took a few units of insulin, which would normally get be back down the the 100 range and... nothing.

By the time I hit over 200, I added 4 more units and... nothing.

Figuring this had to be due to something I was taking, I created a 2nd basal plan which was just 2 units per hour and turned my pod from automatic to the 2 units/hr plan, alongside the IOB I already had which was well above 10 units now (which I would normally consider a dangerously high amount if I hadn't been eating carbs) and... nothing.

By the time I hit 260, I was about ready to switch out the new pod I just installed this morning before getting all my scrips, thinking that it might just be a bad pod, even though except for the one time a pod's sticky backing had failed and the tube came out and the VERY smelly insulin was apparent on my fingers this has NEVER happened before...

But then I checked online...

Hey Google. Does Methylprednisolone effect insulin?

Quote:

Methylprednisolone (a corticosteroid) frequently causes hyperglycemia by increasing insulin resistance and reducing the effectiveness of insulin. Patients, especially those with diabetes, must monitor blood sugar closely, as higher insulin doses or increased medication adjustments are often required. The effect usually peaks 4-8 hours after a dose.

Key Interaction Details

Mechanism: Steroids like methylprednisolone raise blood sugar by increasing insulin resistance and stimulating the liver to release extra glucose.

Hyperglycemia Risk: High-dose or long-term steroid use can cause steroid-induced diabetes, even in those without a prior history of diabetes.

Management Strategies:

Close Monitoring: Blood glucose should be monitored frequently, particularly 4-8 hours after taking the medication.

Insulin Adjustment: Patients with diabetes may need to increase their insulin dose.

Timing: For daily morning doses of methylprednisolone, insulin needs are often higher during the afternoon and evening.

Thank you Google AI. You have been very helpful once again.

What the fucking shit? I've got a doctor along with a nurse who prescribed this to me, and a pharmacist who all know that I'm essentially a Type I diabetic who needs insulin to live, and nobody fucking thought this was important information to pass along to me?

I'm on my way to 300 now (and more than 12 HOURS after I took the steroid), I've got an insulin profile giving me 4 UNITS PER HOUR, with IOB (Insulin On Board) over 15 now and I'm still climbing.

This shit is bad enough where a person without diabetes at all can get "steroid-induced diabetes", and NOBODY THOUGHT THIS WAS IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO PASS ALONG TO ME!!!!!!!???????

No wonder why nobody trusts doctors anymore today either.

The steroids are clearly doing the job they were meant to do coupled with the Z-Pack, but I'm fucking afraid to raise this insulin anymore in fear that the steroid loses its effect in the middle of the night and all that extra insulin catches up and I end up dying in the middle of my sleep by going hypoglycemic.

I guess I'll maybe I'll just wait it out and go into keto-acidosis again until my scrip runs out.

Goddammit.

This drug looks Dangeros AF....

e-dose-pack-1340-0-1607-3549.html

I never would have taken this if I read this document beforehand. I can't believe I was prescribed it, let alone my pharmacist allowed for it to be handed over to me.

I can't just quit either. This is a drug that can be addictive. That's probably why they start you with 6 and step down 1 per day until you're only taking one pill on day 7.

But it looks like this can do things like perforate your digestive track and cause sepsis and cause peptic ulcer disease, as well as re-activate any old infections you may have had like malaria (fortunately, I don't believe I've ever had that one at least). Hope to god those xrays don't come back and say that I somehow got TB, because if I do, that's really bad news for me.

Shit... this fucking drug can cause Type 2 diabetes. Wouldn't that be something to get TTD on top of my Lada so I have to take metformin and glyposide along with my insulin for the rest of my life.

I swear to god these doctors are just trying to kill me now.

Quote:

Based on discussions on Reddit (primarily in r/diabetes and r/Type1Diabetes),
taking methylprednisolone (Medrol) while using insulin causes significant, temporary insulin resistance and, consequently, high blood sugar (hyperglycemia). It is widely considered a "nightmare" by users, often requiring substantial increases in insulin doses, sometimes doubling or tripling daily amounts to keep blood sugar under control.
Here is a summary of the experiences and advice found on Reddit regarding methylprednisolone and insulin:

Key Experiences with Methylprednisolone + Insulin

Massive Blood Sugar Spikes: Users often report blood sugar levels in the 200–300+ mg/dL range, regardless of diet, particularly with "Medrol dose packs" or higher doses.

Insulin "Doesn't Work": Many describe the experience as having "water for insulin," where standard boluses or basal rates have little to no effect on lowering blood sugar.

Delayed Action: The steroid effect can be delayed, with some users noticing the highest, most stubborn numbers occurring 3–9 hours after taking the medication.

Duration: The effects generally last for the duration of the steroid course and may continue for a few days to two weeks afterward.

Risk of DKA: Several users mentioned that improper management or un-dosed steroids led to Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).

Common Strategies for Management

Increase Basal Insulin: Many users, especially those on pumps, report needing to increase their basal rate by 30% to 100% or more, particularly during the middle of the day.

Increase Bolus/Correction Doses: Users often have to use aggressive correction factors, with some splitting their, or simply doubling, their bolus insulin.

"Steroid" Basal Profile: Pump users often create a specific, high-basal "sick" profile for the duration of the medication.

Time of Day: Taking the medication in the morning is often suggested to allow for better monitoring during the day, though it can still cause high numbers overnight.

Low Carb Diet: Many users shift to very low-carb or no-carb meals to manage the blood sugar load while on steroids.

Important Notes

Consult a Professional: Users strongly advise contacting an endocrinologist to create a temporary, proactive plan before starting the steroid, as normal ratios will not apply.

Tapering Down: The impact usually tapers down as the steroid dose decreases, but it requires diligent monitoring until back to normal.

Disclaimer: The information above is a summary of personal experiences and advice from public Reddit forums and does not constitute medical advice. Always consult with your doctor for changes to your insulin regimen.

No wonder you were dragging anchor, SIX! That's a significant load of infections you got going!

I read your post earlier, and I too forgot to forewarn you about blood sugar. But then, I'm not a doctor or pharmacist, SOMEBODY should have warned you!

DON'T PANIC.

Everyone in our family has been on much higher doses of prednisone and prednisolone, and decadron which is way stronger, for weeks, months, or years, and the thing that I learned is that while the list of potential side effects is longer than I am tall, not everyone gets the same ones and some people don't get any. Hubby's blood sugar went into the 300 range on prednisone but he got PROFOUND muscle weakness on decadron, while dear daughter's blood sugar was stable but she got moon face and buffalo hump. As for me, decadron made me higher than a kite ... I felt GREAT!! (If sleepless) but prednisone and prednisolone had almost no side effects whatsover.

Fortunately the side effects are TEMPORARY, which is the thing to focus on.

I would worry a lot more about overdosing on insulin and crashing overnight than I would about high blood sugar. My sister, who was a tech in a county hospital stat lab and licensed EMT, said she got pretty sang froid (literally "blood cold", cold-blooded) about blood glucose in the 300 range. It was not considered an emergency, just a condition to be brought under control over the next few hours or days, depending on how complicated the patient was, bc blood sugar in the 300 range is dangerous only in the long run, while low blood sugar can kill you in hours. But you know that already.

Does your CGM have a REALLY LOUD alarm? Like, one that would wake the dead? I hope so!

In the meantime, since your steroid dose is going down substantially every day, you should be able to start dropping your insulin. Just don't blood sugar go over 400.

Also, definitely call your doc or pharmacist and double check with them that you're managing this properly. It seems to me that you are, but do-it-yourself medicine is dangerous. That's another thing I learned over the years.

Also, definitely call your doc or pharmacist and double check with them that you're managing this properly. It seems to me that you are, but do-it-yourself medicine is dangerous. That's another thing I learned over the years.

I appreciate the pep-talk.

I will be calling them today. I was going to call anyway since I never heard back from them about the X-Rays yet, and I did double check with the pharmacy online and no new scrips were written yet, so I'm not even sure they looked at the X-Rays even.

I only put 150 units of a possible 300 max units in the pods, which usually sees me throw out at least 25-30 units in every pod I use, unless I eat out with family or friends and have more carbs than usual. (My scrip is for 250 units every 3 days, so I've been banking quite a bit of insulin on my regular diet).

Right now I got the warning that I'm low on insulin, which means that in less than 24 hours I've used up more than I usually do in 3 days. I changed my pod yesterday around 10:00 AM, and I took the steroid at exactly 2:00PM.

My current blood sugar level is 322 and rising. I currently have an estimated 17.5 units of insulin on board (IOB), which I would normally consider an EXTREMELY dangerous amount under any normal circumstances (my device is prepped to never allow me a bolus injection of more than 14, and before any meal I've never even taken more than 12). During the middle of the night I upped my insulin to 8 units per hour from a normal .75 units per hour and I'm still 322 and rising.

The pod I'm about to change in is going to get the max 300 units before I install it, and I'm going to raise that hourly to 12 units and hopefully I can at least keep it from rising any further. Like you said, I'm going to be taking less everyday, and from what I've read the half-life of this steroid is pretty quick so I don't believe there should be too much compounding. Although

Well... managed to get it back to under 290 now, but I'll be taking my 5-pill dose in just a little over an hour now. Not really feeling great about starting that dose with a number this high, when it got me to a max of 322 with the 6-pill dose when I started at just under 100 and I haven't eaten a single carb in about 30 hours.

Going to put those pens to use now as much as I can, rather than using a bunch of pods up. I'm just going to have to be vigilant in keeping track of those numbers since my pod won't be. I took another 30 unit basal dose just 2 hours ago. These pens were nearing their expiration date, so I don't feel bad about using them up, but I will be looking to reload those prescriptions now too just to have backups for any future things like this if they were to take place.

I had to replace my 3-day pod in less than 1 day just a few minutes after I made that last post. I was wrong though and 300 isn't the max for these pods. It is only 200. So I only get an additional 50 than the usual I put in there. I'll still be burning through them pretty fast since I'm keeping my basal at 7 per hour in the pod so I'm not going completely offline with it, but I brought it down from the 9 that I had it at. Once I see it going back up, rather than taking direct bolus (mealtime hits), I'm just going to double and triple up on basal doses from the pen with about 5 hours in between to mark where I'm heading.

Hopefully the 6-pill dose from yesterday is basically gone by the time I take the 5-pill dose in about an hour, otherwise this could get well over 400 fairly quickly.

No carbs for me until this prescription is done, and probably not for a day or two after that. Pure protein diet until then.

The tinnitus-like symptoms have seemed mostly to have gone away, though they still linger. I don't feel like my muscles are full of lactic acid anymore too.

Fingers crossed.

ARE YOU OKAY BRENDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????

Best to take steroids as early as you can in the day. Not a blood sugar issue, the ressoning is that (for ppl who follow a typical daily schedule) ...

Your adrenals (sitting right on top of your kidneys) produce their own corticosteroids, but they do that mainly at night, in sleep, around 0300 for most ppl. If you have prescription steroids floating around in your bloodstream your adrenals shut off. If they keep getting shut off, they may throttle back so much it's hard to get them started again, even when prescription steroids are gone. It's called adrenal suppression. By taking steroids in the AM it gives your body a chance to clear them by the time your adrenals wake up.

For a six-day course shouldn't be a problem but best not to flirt with it.

Somebody should have told you about that too!!!

That was so careless of them!

Hi Sig. I'm okay. Monitor froze again Monday. It was fine the morning but then when I got back it had turned itself off. Been trying to warm it up again but's hard when I have things to do in the week.

And getting help is like pulling teeth.

Just a note. I am at the library because my monitor froze again on Monday. Used it before I went out then when I got back it had turned itself off. Have been trying to warm it up myself to get it working. Paying for help is bordering on the impossible without the bring it in. Easy for them to say. Even the monitor is heavy for me. Every one says it is hard ware. But that is all. Hopefully I can get it running soon and be back.

This has been a really crappy week. Booby prize at mah jong. Was late and the boss got upset. Then I broke tooth yesterday eating cereal. I figure the drilling must have put a crack into it and last night was just enough. Have to call or go in to make an appointment to repair it. This is the only place I can get to because it is the only one I remember my password for. UGH!!! Some one just shoot me.

Heh... yeah... Did what I thought I probably would end up doing too, and it crashed so hard that by the time I took the next 5-pill dose I was back down to 125. I ended up having to take more glucose than I ever had before to get it back up to a reasonable level with all of that excess insulin floating in my bloodstream. It seems to have leveled out for the moment with my current levels of pen-insulin and the pod insulin. Usually taking that much glucose would have already had me on the roller coaster flying high above 200 again, but I do believe it's the excessive amount of insulin that is keeping it down. It's been quite a long time since the dose, but around this time last night was when I started noticing it climbing, and by that time not only was I fighting a losing battle, but I didn't realize yet the battle I was even facing.

Now that I know, I'm going to try to stay on top of it better tonight. I'm still not sure if I have to baby it a bit since today's dose was one pill less, because even if the half-life is short there's got to be some of the old stuff still in there too, but it was just starting to get really outnumbered by all that basal insulin I had from the pods and the pen.

At least I kept it from dipping below 40, but just barely.

You know... If I ever fucked up at any of my jobs like everyone involved here did, I'd have been out on my ass immediately.

But none of them will be in trouble for any of this, and if I tried suing them I'd just be wasting my time and my money.

This world is disgusting.

You said you had another monitor on your other computer when we were talking about this earlier, Brenda. I knew it was only a matter of time before the monitor or the cord failed on you. If you try the other monitor and it doesn't work, you can also try moving your computer to your TV and using one of the AUX HDMI inputs and using your TV as your monitor until you get a replacement.

Sorry about the tooth. That sucks.

Glad you're alright otherwise, health-wise.

Was getting a little worried about you over here.
