Not impressed at all with the TVTally site. Yes, Firefly tops the show lists and that is certainly good.

But the "episode" list is just an average rating of the 1-to-10-style of votes that people give each episode. I contacted TVTally with suggestions for improving their episode ranking, but even though they had prompted me for suggestions in detail, they chose to ignore my suggestions. They don't appear to be very good at math. As a result - all of the episodes in their top 25 list have nearly the same number of points. It'll then boil down to only fractions of a point difference between their episodes.

Plus they appear to round to the nearest 1/100th point and then list alphabetically after that. Pffft.

Here is part of their list:

Objects in Space Firefly 8.74/368

Family Jewels Las Vegas 8.71/7

Albatross Law&Order: 8.71/7

Friends&Lovers NCIS 8.71/7

Once More, With Feeling
Buffy the Vampire Slayer 8.66/454

Family Jewels had 6 votes at "10", and was in first place. All it took was a vote of "1" to put it in 2nd place. The Buffy episode has had 450+ votes, but is behind a group of 7 vote episodes.

That is almost a useless poll. But TVTally doesn't realize that all of the episodes will pop to the top quickly as six people give it a "10" then all settle down to 8.71.

(I'm still casting votes for "show", but "episode" is a waste.)

The episode voting on tvtally is problematic. (I started a thread in their forum about it)

A major problem is the people voting negatively - check out farscapes episodes. I, personally, 10'd all the unranked episodes, just to test my theory, and a few hours later, someone had com along and 1'd them all.

Unfair, and it happens to anything that rises above Firefly/Buffy.

I mean, most if not all Firefly eps should have a perfect 10, no?

So who gave less than 10? Not any of us, surely?

Something else I noticed is that the TV Tally episode ranking only lists the top episode of each show. At one time Firefly had the top 8 or 9 spots.Now it's only Objects in Space(which I just downloaded from iTunes. My loaner isn't back yet).

My guess is that they made a change to only allow one show's episode per spot. That was a stop-gap measure. They also don't count shows until they get 6 votes.

Soon all of the shows on the list will have a score of about 8.71. OiS is at 8.74, but will get a few more "1" votes.

Show X gets 5 "10" votes, but does not appear until the 6th vote (likely a "10"). Then it has a score of 10/6. Next it gets a "1" vote and then has a score of 8.71. It'll get more "10"s and more "1"s and like all of the other episodes will settle at 8.71.

A year ago, Zena was still number 1, and by a larger margin, over a different number 2 (Farscape.) Bonanza was number 15. Talk about fan power. Even Firefly was doing better (twice as better, and at number 9). In the last year, the Bonanza fans added 177,000 votes, while we added 156,000 (although in a shorter period of time, as we didn't really get into this race until a few months ago). Xenites added 148,000 votes in the last year. No one else has even come close to the voting action by the top 3. Gunsmoke has, however, come from way back in the pack. And where are the Buffy fans? There are lots of them, and they are natural allies of ours.

Their heirs are legally obligated to either keep the site up, or donate the money to a home for flea infested mice. So it's forever ;-)

And I believe it was pointed out from the very beginging that the episode voting on TVtally is useless, and worse, divisive. I personally suspect that folks are assuming that it is firefly fans who are tearing down the other episodes from up top. I sincerely hope it isn't.
I recommend simply ignoring the episode voting.

I just registered to serenitymovie.org and posted about the same thing there (and to the soooo old vote for firefly III thread in this very forum) that I will here, so sorry if some of you see it twice. It's soooo late here...

It's good to meet you guys! I'm from Hungary, and I am watching Firefly only the 2nd time these days icon_smile.gif Ok, I'm coming pretty late, but hey, at least I saw the episodes in the correct order! ;)

Ok, maybe you'll hear more about me later, but now let's get down to business...

The Xena votes... 3rd plot up here... Did you notice any funny patterns? Well, I did... Strangely flat distribution (around 600 votes/week) for 2+ months, then a sudden rise to almost the double of it at the end of January... Incidentally, 600 votes equals 4 "people" voting each hour, 24/7... As Reyclou put it at another place: "Methinks most of them are scripts or bots - automatic vote generators that have been going since this thing began."

I say let's kick those bots into the engine!

Install Greasemonkey in Firefox from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/748/, restart FF, click my goodie http://firefly.dreamhosters.com/firefly.user.js, then go to http://richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html, wait a few seconds and enjoy the shinyness! I have been nominating Gilmore Girls. I may be the only one though. Heroes is a very good show. I also like Lost very much. They all deserve to be in the top 40.

When I saw the 3rd plot on this thread, I got the feeling that something strange is going on here. If you look at the Xena votes, you can notice a funny pattern that distinguishes it from the rest of the shows: The average number of Xena votes remains unusually steady for a while, and then it grows hundreds in a day. Look at Feb 2 and Feb 16. I guess we’re dealing with one or two heavyweight fans who run several gorram bots…

So, I decided to wrote a Firefly version. First it was fully automatic , but then my conscience kicked in, and now it's just a FlyVote substitute.

How it works: After opening http://richlabonte.net/tvvote/index.html, the script ticks the Firefly checkbox, then it asks if you wanna vote. Then you click OK. Then it waits 61 minutes, reloads the page, and it starts from the beginning :)

I keep voting - you keep voting - my daughter covers for me when she uses computer. Don't get the Xena thing. Saw one episode many moon ago. Only one warrior woman I can appreciate. I remember Bonanza, but I am older. Most people who may have loved that show may not even have access to a computer in the nursing home.

I vote for Angel and Buffy also - Give Joss the power.
