Farewell
Sunday, July 29, 2007

Like many before me, I've gotten sick of the status quo around here. It's not like this just popped up as this feeling started creeping up slowly somewhat before the movie was released (i.e. when the "fanboys" started showing up). Now, it's just gotten to the point where I really feel that "fanboys" and/or there basic mentality (if even diluted) have become too prevalent for me to stay around. Well, that among many other things.

So, my posting here will be sporadic at best for the foreseeable future. Perhaps if the "fanboys" leave... don't know.

At any rate, farewell and best of luck.

I've only got one thing to say.....if you can't make fun of it, laugh at it or have a good sense of humor about it, it's not worth being a fan. That's the way I see it. I've always held this to be true of everything that I'm passionate about, Def Leppart (snicker all you want, I do); Star Wars and Firefly!
So here's to laughing!

LOL! OK, I see the annoyance with rabid Joss worship, the insistence that he is always right. It's funny, fans will tear up each little line in the episodes as if they have Deep Inner Meaning, when maybe Joss just threw them in there when he was hungover or something LOL! Or just to make a joke, or to fill in time, or because Fox didn't like what he really wanted to write. It's just silly.

Anyway, thanks for explaining, and sorry you were attacked. Some people suck. Have fun out in the real world, but don't stay away too long!

Thank you for the kind replies.

@TWG:

Ni hoa! Just waiting for approval :)

@To those that asked:

Now those that know me, know that from time to time my posts can be... rough. This is because each post typically goes through many revisions before it is posted, but sometimes for various reasons I can not do the necessary review. Thus the periodic roughness. This is going to be a rough post b/c I just don't have the time and energy right now to get things right. So, please keep that in mind while reading.

Also, please keep in mind that you guys DID ask me to "hit the hornets nest." So, you're getting what you asked for in more ways than one.

People worshiping at the altar of Joss Whedon. Which includes, but is not limited to, assuming and defending /everything/ he does as if it were gold regardless of actual quality. The defending part also isn't of the discussing kind. It's the, "I'm going to attack you for not thinking Joss is the second coming and I'm going to try to shove my opinion down your throat" type stuff. Well, that or just ridicule people till they go away. The new and more "polite" form here is outright ignoring any "dissenting" opinions.

This also isn't limited to Joss. There are those that have contributed to this community (in smaller or larger ways) and pretty much by default get "groupies" around them. These people are defended with (almost) the same vigor that Joss is.

Now, although I have been on the receiving end of one (or more) attacks, I've also had people attack "on my behalf" (even though I specifically asked to the contrary). Quite frankly, I find this behaviour just plain stupid, as even the worlds best thinkers have stupid ideas from time to time. What makes anyone think that the "less smart" are otherwise? What makes anyone think that going around attacking people (unprovoked) is going to solve anything? Vengeance is *never* an answer. This problem is getting worse, btw.

A "more specific" example of "fanboy" is how the inconsistencies between the movie and series were "resolved". The main problem being that when someone comes up with a so-called solution, it actually introduces more inconsistencies into the picture. And when this is pointed out... well, the whole venomous attack thing pops up. God forbid a flaw would be found and admitted in "the holy ones" work. I could give a few specific examples, but it'd surely start these "holy wars" again and I haven't the time nor the energy. Though the archives are a treasure trove of examples if people are so inclined.

Another associated issue is that of the "who has been here the longest is by default right and/or more knowledgeable/wise/etc". This is just plain non-sense (especially when the time difference is basically insignificant) and this mentality didn't exist when I first got here. What person would actually assume that they know better based solely on registration date? Like that has anything to do with what's going on with the vast majority of issues.

I could go on, but time is limited and if I did, I'd /really/ start pointing fingers and that never ends well. So, I hope that this incomplete reply is good enough b/c I really don't want to, nor will I, write any more.

I wish you guys the best of luck and hope that the extreme, some day, is removed from this community.

I've been here a couple of months longer than you, and I have found the best way to deal with things is, first, stay out of the RWED forum, and second, ignore the trolls on the other forums. It's worked okay so far.

It feels like there has been so much turnover at this site that even 2005 seems like ancient history!

I hope to see you around here, or elsewhere. Keep flyin'.

Take care.

I'm curious too, SigmaNunki.

The place has changed, nothing ever does stay the same, but I've seen stages here come and go. There will likely be more.
I too feel the strain of the lack of the 'Verse...with no specific news yet, it's like being in limbo. But... I still love this place. What feels changed to you?

This is my first fandom as well, and I'm afraid I don't know what a "fanboy" attitude is.
I'm not trying to start an argument nor be troublesome, I truly want to understand what you're feeling.

If you feel like telling the several of us who've asked, I for one would appreciate it.

So... as one who showed up at BDM time, I don't know what this site was like before. Even so, I have noticed a change since I first started hanging here. But I can't define it. Can you explain what you've seen? Really, I'm asking out of curiousity. I've never done any fandom stuff so I just don't get it. What is "fanboy mentality"?

(And this isn't just a trick to make you stay. Well... only a little.)

I understand. For me, it was just time away and a rethinking of discussions I was willing to click. We'll miss you.

See you soon!

No, don't go! Please stay!

Why are so many people leaving? I'll admit that it hurts to see so many people leaving.

I hope that wherever you are, and wherever you go, you are well.

And I hope to see you return here SigmaNunki.

Farewell.

Just curious - What do you mean by "fanboys"? (This question is the result of a glass of wine.)
