My Semi-Famous Morning...
Tuesday, October 2, 2007

So this morning, I worked as a background extra on a TV drama. I'm not going to say which show it is because I'm not a fan of it, but I know there may be people here who are fans of the show, so I'm not going to cause any controversy.

("Firefly" puts this other show to shame. 'Nuff said. ... Why, God, was "Firefly" cancelled when there is crappier programming out there?!?!?!)

One of the scenes this morning revolved around a TV station manager firing one of her employees. Last spring semester, I learned in acting class that no matter what is going on in the scene, be in the moment even if you aren't the focus of the scene. So, I reacted to what was going on. I held this look on my face like, “Oh my gosh, what did he call her?! What? She’s firing him??”—but I sorta kept it inside, so it wasn’t over the top. After the central characters were filmed, I heard the director say, “Okay, let’s get reaction from the background. I want to get a shot of the girl in the blue shirt.” Said girl was me! All of the sudden, the lighting guys were putting a couple extra lights on me, the make-up girl came over and powered my nose, and the camera was pointed in my direction. YIKES AND WOW! For five minutes, I felt like a star! Though, my favorite part was how cool the main actors handled the situation: they played the scene again even though the camera wasn’t on them. I may not like the show and I may be a little bit critical about the acting ability of the actress (it was bad!), but I do respect the actors now. Afterwards, the crew kept coming to me and telling me that I did a good job.

Now, do I want a career as an actress? Maybe. I still want to be a screenwriter first and foremost. But, I’d be an idiot to not keep acting!

That's all manner of cool that you're a background actress ( having been a make-up artist) and hey without you the scenes would all be weirdly empty and totally unrealistic!! HUGS and congratulations on your shiny "starring " role!

I *might* say which show it is, but definitely not before the episode airs. There is always the possibility that I may be cut out. The last time I worked on this show, I spent three days on set, and I didn't appear once on TV. ... Plus, there is this whole non-disclosure clause on the papers I signed this morning before work. We'll see.
