"Kaylee! Gorramit Kaylee it’s pouring out here!" Jayne shouted as he ran down the ramp after her. She ignored him, adjusted her bag on her shoulder, and just kept on walking.
"Go on back t’the ship, Jayne," she ordered. He didn’t listen to her, just caught up with her and fell instead with her quick strides.
"Talk t’me," he growled. She didn’t say anything, just kept on walking. Pretended like he wasn’t even there. "Kaylee—"
"Don’t ‘Kaylee’ me one more time ‘cause I don’t wanna hear it," she snapped.
"Yer gonna get sick," he told her, moving around to step in front of her. Kaylee nimbly swerved around him, but not before Jayne caught her arm and pulled her to a halt in the rain.
"I ain’t goin’ back there," she told him, her eyes not meeting his.
"Ain’t your fault girl," he said slowly. Kaylee looked up at Jayne, her eyes brimming with tears. She shook her head though and pulled out of his grasp.
"I’ve been thinkin’ long and hard about this, Jayne. I decided the minute I could walk on my own, I’d be on my way. My leg is healed up and this is as good of a place as any. Always liked rain. Ship ain’t the place for me no more," she said.
"It ain’t your fault what happened to Wash," Jayne whispered.
"You see the way Zoe looks at me, Jayne? Every really noticed it. She don’t mean t’do it, I know she don’t, but her eyes are so cold. Like they’re asking, why couldn’t you just do it. Why couldn’t you just pull the gorram trigger. And I ain’t got an answer t’that, Jayne. I don’t belong on this ship. Bad enough I couldn’t pull my weight when we went after Niska. I coulda done something down there with me and Wash and I didn’t. I wouldn’t." She continued to walk away from him, heading to the town up ahead. She had some money she had been saving for this day. It would buy room and board for a couple weeks until she could find a job.
"You ain’t even gonna tell Mal?" Jayne asked. Kaylee shook her head. That was a conversation she just didn’t want to have. She turned to look at Jayne again, crossing her arms over her chest.
"You better go back. Cap’n was plannin’ on leavin’ just as soon as River's got her warmed up." She pushed her wet hair out of her face and sighed. He was making this so much harder on her.
"Don’t do this, Kaylee. Zoe’s just hurtin’ right now. We’re all hurtin’. Weren’t your fault though." Jayne reached out and took her hand in his. She let him for a moment, gave him a weak smile, before pulling back.
"Tell ‘em all I’m sorry." Her hand dropped back down to her side and she turned and left.
