Jayne must have slammed the butt of his gun into the glass a thousand times before he felt Mal pulling him away. "This ain’t gettin’ us nowhere," the captain reprimanded. He was right. Jayne moved to the man who had been laughing earlier and slammed the butt Vera into his face instead, knocking him to the ground. The other man backed up scared, but Jayne wasn’t concerned with him yet. He straddled the guy on the floor and stared down at him
"Who else knows how t’open that door?" he asked. When the guy said nothing, Jayne punched him in the face, knocking a tooth out. Kaylee hadn’t gotten up yet and that was making Jayne a mite tetchy. "Who?!"
"No one," the man spurted out, blood dribbling down his chin.
"We gotta by-pass this lock somehow," Mal said, looking at the panel again. "Maybe we could…"
"She needs help." The quiet female voice came from down the hallway. Mal and Jayne both looked up to see River standing there, her eyes watering slightly as she looked past them and towards the room.
"River!" Simon came running around the corner, looking slightly out of breath. His face slackened with relief as he finally caught up with his sister. Simon’s face fell when he saw Jayne standing over a bloodied man. He kicked into doctor mode and moved to the man’s side.
"He don’t need our help, son," Mal stopped him. Simon looked at the captain confused before Mal pointed toward the window. The doctor straightened and moved to look in, his breath catching in his throat.
"Kaylee," Simon whispered. "How do we get in?"
"It’s a c-183 model lock," River said. Jayne looked over to see the girl crouched before the panel. "Military class code v5671, patent 0987389421. It has a master override." She pressed a few buttons and the door popped open. Jayne wanted to rush into the room to Kaylee, but the doc pushed his way in first, kneeling down at her side.
"Thank god, she’s breathing," Simon called out. Jayne felt himself visibly relax. He moved to the doorway to look in on the doc and Kaylee. He was gently trying to coax her awake. "Kaylee….Kaylee can you hear me? She’s running a fever. We have to get her back to the ship. Someone help me get her up."
"Git outta my way, Doc," Jayne growled, moving to pick Kaylee up like she didn’t weigh a thing. Truth be told she was a whole lot lighter than he remembered. Work really must have been scarce for little the girl.
Mal moved to the men who were and put a bullet into each of them before turning to motion to the others. "Time to go!" Simon stood and went over to River, taking her arm to follow after the captain. Jayne followed behind them.
"Stop where you are." Jayne looked up to see seven men standing with guns pointed at them. "We’re here to collect on a debt. We’ll be taking the girl now," the big man in the center said.
"Like hell you will," Jayne growled, tightening his grip on Kaylee’s unconscious body.
