Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.
The old saying played over in Jayne’s head. He’d never really believed it, but now he hoped he had been wrong. The chapel bell in the steeple rang several times, swinging back and forth rhythmically. It was just like how she wanted it. Jayne felt Mal’s arms pull him aside.
"Time to go," the captain said quietly. Jayne nodded and followed the Mal to where little Kaylee’s coffin was laid out.
"Daddy!" Jayne turned to see Anna running after him. He knelt down and picked the little girl up, kissing her cheek.
"Gotta stay with Auntie ‘Nara," Jayne told his daughter quietly.
"But I want to stay with you," she pleaded. Jayne swallowed. The rest of the pallbearers were waiting on him. It was time he finished this. Anna was still too little to understand what was going on. Understand her mama had died; too small to know what a gun shot to the heart did. She was the lucky one.
"She got away from me," Inara said, coming up to Jayne.
"It’s fine. Here, take her. Let her go outside t’listen t’that bell. Her mama always liked that. Think she’ll like it too," Jayne said. Inara took the small girl from Jayne’s arms and gave him a sympathetic smile.
Jayne turned and headed to where Mal, Book, Wash, Simon and Zoe stood waiting for him. He reached the wooden coffin and took hold of the golden bar, placing himself in front on the left. Together, the six of them moved to lift the coffin up. It was lighten than Jayne had expected. The chapel doors opened as they made their way slowly down the aisle towards the cemetery outside.
Jayne could see Kaylee parents at the back of the church, eyes red with tears and blame. Blaming him, he knew that much. Should’ve taken better care of her, not let her get in the way during that firefight. He’d failed her though. Failed them all. As they stepped outside into the cool morning, the bells finally stopped ringing. He hoped little Kaylee had gotten her wings.
