The first time it happened Jayne had been in his bunk. It wasn’t hard to figure out what was going on in the room next to him. He could hear her soft sighs and his deep groans. It was about time the doc made a move. Of course Jayne hated it, hearing how Simon could make Kaylee cry out. The next day at dinner he tried not to let it bother him, but all he could think about was those two rutting. He had to get it out of his head though. Little Kaylee was happy, that was what was important. He could stand Simon being her lover as long as Kaylee was happy.
The first time it happened, Jayne had been on his way to the galley. He was a tracker, a mercenary, trained to pick up the little things. Hearing the mechanic sniffling from the engine room had caught his attention. When he poked his head in, he didn’t see anyone at first. Then she hiccuped and Jayne spotted her in the far corner, knees drawn up and face buried in her hands. She was crying because of him. Couldn’t be no other reason.
"What’d he do?" Jayne asked.
"Go away, Jayne. Ain’t in the mood," she mumbled, her face still buried in her arms. Jayne was tempted to leave, but before he could turn to go a sob shook her body. Ruttin’ women and their gorram emotions. Jayne never knew how to deal with them and he could have shot the doctor for putting him in this situation. But Jayne wasn’t about to leave Kaylee to cry her eyes out like that.
"Fess up girl, somethin’ went down. Now either you gotta tell me or I’m just gonna skip the excuses and go put a few bullets in your doctor," Jayne said. He was sort of hoping Kaylee wouldn’t say anything so he could put a few holes in Simon. The thought sort of made him smile. Jayne had been more than willing to let his distaste for Simon slide since he was making Kaylee happy, but when he started making Kaylee cry, that was when Kaylee’s lover became Jayne’s rival.
Kaylee sniffled and lifted her head. "Don’t you dare put bullets in anyone, Jayne Cobb," she scolded. The mechanic stood up and scrubbed the tears from her eyes.
"Spill then," he said, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Just some stupid stuff got said is all," she said, shaking her head. Jayne raised an eyebrow at her and she sighed and leaned against the wall. "Simon’s been workin’ on this medicine stuff for River. Been workin’ on it for near a week now, hardly steps out of the infirmary for more than food and the bathroom. It’s been days since me and him really saw each other and I decided he needed a break from all the work.
"So I went and tried t’get him to have a little tussle with me and he wouldn’t even look up from the book when I was talkin’ to him. I got mad, I shouldn’t have got mad, but I did. Told him I was upset ‘cause he hadn’t been ‘round last few days and he got mad back. Not real mad, more cold I guess. Said he was tryin’ t’help his sister an’ that I was being unreasonable. So I told him straight to his face I didn’t think he gave two hoots about me and that he never would because I wasn’t his sister and he was always gonna care ‘bout her more than me. He looked me straight back and said I was right, that River would always come first." Kaylee wiped her red cheeks and sniffled again.
"I know everything he did for River, but me and Simon have been together for near three months now and he can’t even spare twenty minutes for me? Am I really bein’ unreasonable? I mean, is it really such a bad thing to want to be first, at least for a few minutes a day?" Kaylee’s pleading eyes about broke Jayne’s heart. He licked his lip and shook his head, hoping that was the right answer.
"It ain’t unreasonable, Kaylee," he whispered. Her eyes looked up at him and for a second he thought she was gonna burst into tears again. "Aw, come on Kaylee, don’t cry." She didn’t. Instead she launched herself at him, pressing her lips to his. Jayne was too surprised to react and by the time he realized what was happening Kaylee had pulled back.
"I shouldn’t have done that," she whispered. Jayne opened his mouth to tell her it was okay, but she fled past him. Jayne watched her go for a minute, then brought his hands up to his lips. The first time Kaylee and Jayne had kissed, Jayne’s heart race and then break at the same time. But Jayne was determined that the first time would not be the last time.
