She put the idea into my head, so if you like it you can blame it on her and Squish.
Jayne looked down the ramp at the pouring rain, then back at Mal. "You serious?"
"Course I’m serious," Mal said. "We gotta get this cargo loaded up and it ain’t gonna load itself. And I’m the captain, I got me captainy things to do. That leaves you, now get to it." Mal gave Jayne a pat on the shoulder and headed back out of the cargo bay. Jayne sighed and adjusted his cowboy hat on his head. Maybe it would keep some of the rain out of his face anyway.
Reluctantly the mercenary headed down the ramp. Small footsteps behind him caused Jayne to turn his head, he smiled to himself when he saw Kaylee. His grin faded some when he realized what she was wearing, a worn old rain coat.
"Kaylee, what the hell do you think you’re doin’?" he asked, stopping and turning to face her.
"I’m gonna help!" she explained as she quickly caught up to him. "Love the rain and I figured you could use the company."
"Lot of big boxes, little girl, not sure what kinda help you’d be," he said, rubbing his goatee.
Things between Kaylee and him had been interesting. They’d shared more than a few nights in each others beds, but Kaylee seemed reluctant to start anything more than that. Any other woman and Jayne might have thought he’d done something real good to deserve that kind of relationship, but little Kaylee had wormed her gorram way into his heart. Not many folks could do that, put her in a class all her own. "’Sides, it’s pourin’ out, you’ll probably catch a cold or somethin’."
"Aw, Jayne, don’t worry so much," she said, slapping his shoulder. Kaylee ran past him into the rain, smiling like she was the sun herself. Jayne couldn’t deny her, not when she was smiling so big. Girl hadn’t smiled that much since everything went down between her and Simon. Jayne refused to be the reason for her not smiling again. You couldn’t keep Kaylee down for long though, she always seemed to bounce back and that was what she was doing right now, bouncing back.
Jayne headed down the ramp after her, slower, and not so anxious to get soaked to the bone. Kaylee picked up a small box and headed past him up the ramp to put it in the bay. "This is real muddy here," he warned her, she just smiled and came quickly back down the ramp after him. Jayne reached to pick up one of the larger boxes, but paused. "Kaylee, slow down ‘fore you…" He watched as her feet slid on the mud, knocking her backwards. Would have hit the ground too if Jayne hadn’t caught her around the waist.
"Ai ya, woman, you ever gonna listen t’me?" he growled. Kaylee blushed, she looked damn sexy when she blushed. He couldn’t help himself. Jayne leaned down and pressed his wet, rain soaked lips against hers. He heard her moan softly under his lips, wrapping her arms around his neck and pulling him that much closer. Kaylee always got under his skin when they kissed, making him want more than any man should. His arms reached around and lifted her up. She took the initiative and wrapped her trim little legs around him waist, making him groan this time. "You’re mighty distracting, babygirl," he whispered.
Someone cleared their throat from the cargo bay. Jayne pulled back, only mildly surprised to see Simon. "The captain needs you, Kaylee," the doctor announced. Kaylee blushed and unwrapped her legs from around Jayne’s waist while the mercenary made sure to set her down carefully.
"Don’t slip," he told her, smacking her ass as she scurried up the ramp past Simon. Jayne watched her disappear up the stairs to the catwalk and off towards the bridge before he turned his attention back to Simon who was staring down at Jayne.
"What?" Jayne growled.
"It’s surreal is all," Simon shook his head. "Seeing the two of you together. You don’t deserve her you know. You barley have enough brains to walk and talk at the same time. I can’t imagine what she sees in you."
"Why don’t you come say that to my face? What, afraid them pretty shoes of yours might get a little dirty? Sometimes you gotta get a little dirty to fight for what you want." Jayne was egging him on now, but it was hard not to. The doctor had been pushing Jayne’s buttons since the whole thing between him and Kaylee had gone down. Maybe if Jayne could just cold cock him the son of a bitch would just drop it. Mal had said no fighting on the ship. Well he wasn’t on the ship now.
"You don’t know anything about what I want," Simon said, taking the bait and heading down the ramp. The rain wasn’t letting up and now it was soaking the doctor right through his fancy clothes.
"Aw hell, whole ship knows what you want, and it ain’t little Kaylee. Come on now, is it the captain? You got doe eyes for Mal or somethin’?" Calling Simon sly wasn’t very constructive, but it sure was fun.
"Cào nî zûxian shí bâ dai," Simon said coldly.
"You kiss your sister with that mouth?" Jayne grinned. The fire that lit up Simon’s eyes was inspiring, made Jayne not feel so bad knowing he was going to beat the crap out of the rutting doctor. Simon charged at him, knocking them both the ground, he managed to get on top of Jayne for a moment, getting a punch in before the mercenary could flip things around. He rolled Simon off him, getting an arm free to swing at him. He got up on his knees and Simon did too. Jayne tried to hold back some, knowing if he killed Simon that Kaylee would be none too happy with him. The first punch he landed on Simon’s face whipped the doc’s head back. Jayne could see the cut lip he’d caused. He shoved Simon away from him, knocking him to the ground and stood up, they were both covered in mud now.
Simon pushed himself up from the ground too, wiping the blood off his face with the back of his hand. Jayne didn’t waste any time, he headed right for the doc, throwing a punch into his gut before Simon could block it and then grabbing the doctor by the shirt. He drew his hand back to slam it into Simon’s face, but stopped when he heard her voice.
"Jayne! Simon! Both of you stop it!" Kaylee yelled, running down the ramp. Jayne let go of Simon’s shirt and shoved him back. "What the hell has gotten into you two?!" Kaylee asked, stopping a few feet away from them. Jayne and Simon looked at each other, then Simon shook his head and headed back up the ramp. "Jayne?"
"Doc wanted to tango, Kaylee. I was just playin’ ‘long is all," he said, rubbing his sore jaw. He’d taken much worse, doubted it would even bruise. The mercenary looked down at Kaylee and sighed. She looked mighty upset.
"This ain’t what I wanted," she shook her head.
"No?" he asked.
"No."
Jayne reached out and grabbed her hand, pulling her closer to him. "Jayne, you’re cover in mud!" she cried out, trying to wiggle out of his arms. He was much stronger than her. Not listening to her protests, he just pulled her close and pressed his lips against hers. Kaylee stopped fighting after that, and that made Jayne feel a little better about the whole situation. He pulled back and grinned at her.
"Gonna help me move these boxes now?" he asked.
"Don’t know, I’m covered in mud now ‘cause of you," she grumbled, looking down at her rain coat.
"You think that is being covered in mud? Aw, hell, Kaylee, you’re just askin’ for it now," he whispered, grabbing her and dropping them both down into the mud, his lips finding hers again as he laid her back in the mud. It was too bad she was wearing so many gorram clothes.
