Kaylee stood outside his bunk, knowing she should just turn back and go to her own. What was she doing here anyway, ‘specially after what had happened yesterday? Jayne probably didn’t even want to see her. She couldn’t leave though, the need to see him was pulling at her insides. She’d spent all the night before wishing his body was next to hers, warming her up good, sexing her up even better. She felt like a little piece of her was missing. It wasn’t right and Kaylee didn’t know exactly where the feeling was coming from, but she knew she wasn’t gonna be able to quit Jayne very easy. Swallowing hard, Kaylee pushed the bunk door open and climbed down. Before her feet landed on the ground she heard Jayne.
“What’re you doin’ here, girl?” he asked. There was no menace in his voice. In fact, his voice seemed completely devoid of emotion at all. Something about that scared her. “Why ain’t you in the doc’s bunk?” he continued.
“Jayne…”
“Don’t wanna hear it,” he shook his head.
“You ain’t bein’ fair. You said this don’t gotta be more than I wanted it and all I asked form you was time.” She crossed her arms over her chest and tried to rethink her strategy. Blaming him wasn’t gonna get her very far.
“So what exactly do you want this t’be then, Kaylee?” he asked. She saw him swallow hard and furrowed her brow. Jayne didn’t show weakness like that.
“I have fun with you, Jayne. You make me happy like I ain’t been in weeks, I feel like I’m normal with you,” she said.
“But?”
“But, I can’t stop thinkin’ ‘bout him Jayne,” she said dejectedly. Jayne was quiet for a moment.
“You didn’t answer my question,” he said finally.
“I don’t know what I want this to be,” she replied.
“You stay here in this bunk, Simon ain’t gonna be wantin’ you back,” Jayne shrugged and moved to sit on his bed, grabbing one of his guns to take apart.
“I know that,” she said, not moving from her own spot.
“So what are you doin’ here, Kaylee?” he reiterated.
“I don’t know,” she said simply. She felt her stomach tighten with nervousness. “I can’t think straight tonight. I tried t’go back t’my bunk and get some rest an’ all I did was stare up at the ceiling. I even went and tried t’work on Serenity for awhile and that didn’t work. I…I need you, Jayne” her voice broke for a second and Jayne looked up at her.
“You need Simon,” he corrected.
“No,” she shook her head. “Simon can’t…well he don’t know how t’make me feel the way you do.”
“Sounds like your problem, not mine,” he said, setting the gun down and standing up. “Time t’go Kaylee.”
“Jayne, please,” she whispered. She gazed up at him, pleading with her eyes for him to understand. Jayne refused to meet her gaze.
“Get on out of here,” he told her, taking Kaylee’s arm and leading her to the ladder again. She grabbed one of the rungs, but she didn’t climbing.
“You said this didn’t have t’be more than I wanted it,” she repeated. “Why did things change?”
“I don’t even know what the hell you want, woman,” Jayne growled, annoyance and frustration touching his voice.
“T’feel like I feel when we’re together. You make everything else go away when it’s just me and you. I want…I want sex, Jayne,” she said almost too softly for anyone to hear.
“Sex? That’s it, just sex?” he asked. She nodded and he sighed. “Doc ain’t takin’ you back if’n you’re sleepin’ with me, Kaylee.”
“I know that…which is why I’m askin’ if we can keep this a secret, ‘tween the two of us,” she whispered. Jayne stared long and hard at her, making her shiver right down to her bones.
“That’s all you want? Me as your dirty little secret?” he grunted and crossed his arms over his chest. Kaylee only nodded. Jayne looked her whole body over once, then his eyes held hers once more. “Fine.”
Before she could say anything Jayne’s mouth came crashing down on her neck, the skin beneath tingling with sensations as she felt his tongue slide against her skin. He grabbed her hips and lifted her up to bring her back to his bed. He sat her down and moved his gun parts aside before he climbed on top of her. There were no words between the two of them, but every time Kaylee tried to capture his mouth with her own, he turned his face away.
“Jayne?”
“Shh, it’s just sex, Kaylee,” he told her, before he started to undress her. She closed her eyes and tried not to think about him not wanting to kiss her anymore. This is what I want she reminded herself .
