Jayne sat up as Kaylee dressed. He could tell she didn’t want to go but he didn’t have it in him to ask her to stay, it just hurt too much. She ducked down, looking for her shirt on the floor. Jayne spotted it on the sheets of his bed and picked it up.
“’S right here,” he said, tossing it to her as she straightened. He could see the small frown the passed over her lips. Jayne didn’t like seeing that girl frown, but this was how she wanted it. If Kaylee wanted just sex, then she would get just sex. He couldn’t go beyond that though. His heart got too wrapped up in this whole mess and he was likely to get hurt just as soon as that rutting doctor came to his senses. It wouldn’t be long, not once he realized Jayne wasn’t shacking up with Kaylee anymore. Well…once Kaylee convinced him. It had been a week since Kaylee had come down into Jayne’s bunk asking him to keep their little affair a secret. She had been down there almost every night since. He supposed he should be glad she wanted to be in his bunk at all.
“Thanks, Jayne,” she said quietly, pulling her shirt over her head. When she finished dressing she looked around the room. Trying to see if she had forgotten anything maybe? That or stalling.
“Forget somethin’?” he asked, reaching down and pulling his own boxers on.
“No,” she shook her head finally. She paused and looked at him, probably giving him one more chance to ask her to stay. He didn’t say anything and she finally moved to the ladder. “Guess not. Night, Jayne,” she called as she climbed up the ladder and out of his room.
Jayne watched her as she went, taking in the sight of her body as long as he could. When she was gone he let out a deep breath. Gorram woman would be the end of him. He couldn’t do this anymore. Under normal circumstances Jayne would have been perfectly content to let things go on like this, but these weren’t normal circumstances. Kaylee was something to him and he was tired of being second to her. He couldn’t even really explain what is was about her. She had this way of making a man feel good about himself, loving all of him and not just the bits that are loveable. Her affection made Jayne feel whole inside, like a regular person. He’d thought at one time no one but his ma could love a man like him, but Kaylee had proved him wrong.
Getting dressed, Jayne headed out of his bunk and towards the infirmary. He knew that was where he’d find the doc. He was glad that Kaylee wasn’t fawning over him trying to get his attention when he got there, didn’t think he could take much more of that. Stepping into the infirmary, Jayne cleared his throat.
Simon jumped and turned around, clearly startled. “Is everything alright?” he asked.
“Not entirely, no,” Jayne shook his head. Simon cocked an eyebrow and Jayne continued. “I wanted to talk t’you ‘bout Kaylee.”
“What about her, is she alright?” Simon asked, concern washing over his face.
“She’s fine. ‘Cept for the fact that she’s all broken hearted ‘bout what’s goin’ on ‘tween the two of you,” Jayne said, crossing his arms over his chest. “Seems t’me she thinks there’s a chance she’s gonna be able t’win you back. But I got this notion in my head you ain’t ever taking that girl back, not after what she’s done. Don’t think lil Kaylee has quite grasped that and I’m here t’see to the truth of things.”
“Kaylee cheated on me,” Simon said plainly.
“That she did,” Jayne nodded.
“And with you of all people,” Simon added.
“You wanna go again, little man?” Jayne growled. Simon tensed, but shook his head.
“Because it was so much fun last time?” Simon snarked. He rolled his eyes and turned to return to whatever the hell it was he was doing before Jayne came in there. “Kaylee and I had something good going before you came in and took advantage of her.”
“Gave that girl plenty of chances to say no,” Jayne growled.
“You think all there is to a relationship is sex. Kaylee and I had more than that. We may have had our rough patches…”
“Like when you told her you wasn’t gonna care ‘bout her as much as you cared about that crazy sister of yours?” Jayne asked with an accusing glare.
“I don’t have to explain myself to you or anyone else for that matter. That was between Kaylee and I and you should have stayed out of it,” Simon snapped. “We had a fight, fine, but that doesn’t give you or her, the right to have sex while Kaylee and I were still in a relationship. Kaylee betrayed me and I will never be able to trust her again because of you.”
“Betrayed?” a small voice from the doorway asked. Simon and Jayne turned around to see Kaylee standing there looking so small and timid. Simon’s eyes went a little wide and he stammered for a moment, but Kaylee was the first to speak. “You don’t need t’say anything, Simon,” Kaylee shook her head. She whipped her head to face Jayne, her eyes burning into him. “And you, you promised me, Jayne. What’re you doin’ here?”
“Promised what?” Simon asked suspiciously.
“I was comin’ t’try and talk some sense into your gorram boyfriend, Kaylee,” Jayne growled.
“Promised what?” Simon repeated.
Jayne and Kaylee stared at each other for a long moment before Kaylee broke the gaze and looked at Simon. “That me and Jayne have still been shackin’ up, just quiet like so no one knows it. Or did you already tell him that, Jayne?” Her eyes refocused on the mercenary whose glare never wavered from her.
“I didn’t tell him nothing, girl,” he said evenly.
“You’re still sleeping with Jayne?” Simon asked, a small frown on his face. “As disgusting as I think that is, Kaylee, it really is none of my business now.”
“I see,” she said quietly.
“Kaylee, I’m sorry. I wish things could have turned out differently,” Simon said, sighing softly.
“So this is it?” she asked.
“This is it,” the doctor nodded.
“I cared ‘bout you Simon,” she said.
“Not enough,” he replied back, echoing the words she had told him the night he had caught Jayne in her bunk. They seemed appropriate. “It wasn’t meant to be I suppose.”
“Suppose not,” she agreed. Kaylee licked her lips and turned to leave. Jayne cast a predatory glance Simon’s way before following Kaylee out the door.

“Kaylee….Kaylee we need t’talk!” Jayne called as he caught up with her in the hallway. “I wasn’t goin’ t’go tell the doctor on you.”
“I know, Jayne. I know you wouldn’t do that. I guess I just panicked is all,” she said softly. Her fingers reached out and gripped his shirt, fisting it in her hands to bring Jayne closer to her. Her head tilted up and she moved to kiss his neck. It wasn’t the same as his mouth, but it was better than nothing. Jayne had been avoiding her lips like the plague, which hurt more than she thought it would have. She was upset though and needed some sort of release, some way for her to forget about Simon. It surprised her when Jayne laid a gentle hand on her arm, stopping her.
“Kaylee…I can’t do this no more,” he said, taking a step back and putting a little more distance between them. Kaylee blinked and looked up at him confused.
“Jayne?”
“I care ‘bout you and I ain’t gonna be that man no more. You want me, you want all of me.” Jayne stared down at her with an unreadable expression.
“Please don’t do this. I need you right now, Jayne,” she said quietly, her voice breaking.
“What you need is a good night sleep and to get that ruttin’ doctor out of your head, woman. And maybe this is ‘bout what I need now. You just think about that for awhile.” Jayne moved past her towards the cargo bay leaving Kaylee in the hallway even more uncertain than when she had entered it.
Kaylee sighed as she set the wrench down beside her. It was late, probably too late to be up, but she hadn’t been getting much sleep lately. Avoiding Jayne and Simon had been a full time job these last few weeks. The night was the only time she had for herself. Things had gotten better between her and Simon, though both of them were still tense around each other. Kaylee found it easier than she would have thought to try and forget about the doctor. Not entirely forget about him of course, but she remembered things, things she liked to forget when she was pining after him again. Like the way he ignored her whenever he was in the infirmary and she wanted to talk. Or what he had said to her that day that had pushed her into Jayne’s arms. He had about broken her heart that day. She’d never meant to hurt him back but the honest truth of the matter was she had thought he didn’t care about her no more.
When he had started that fight with Jayne, a part of Kaylee wondered if maybe Simon had realized what he was missing, realized just how much he cared for her. She had wanted him to beg her to come back. She had it all pictured in her, he’d forgive her for being with Jayne and she’d forgive him for the things he had said to her. But that wasn’t how things went down. Nothing ever went according to plan.
And the mercenary had turned out to be an interesting surprise as well. Kaylee had cared about Jayne a whole lot, more than she ever would have thought. Sure he was swai, but he had shown her a whole other side of him she never knew existed. She’d pushed him away though; Kaylee knew she had been awful to him. She’d never wanted to hurt him, but it was so soon after Simon and her had split apart she hadn’t been thinking straight. She was so blinded by her crush and too scared to accept that she and Simon were over. She’d spent nearly a year pining after the doctor before he finally came to his senses and then they had been together for a few months on top of that. Hands down Simon had her heart in his hands and it wasn’t so easy to try and take something like that back. But damnit ifJayne didn’t make her want to take her heart back.
In the end she had burned herself from both ends of the candle. Simon wanted friendship from her, nothing more, and could she really blame him? Did she honestly want more than that, knowing that at any given moment he’d choose River over her? Kaylee didn’t know anymore. And Jayne…well Jayne she hadn’t hardly seen since their encounter in the hallway. He’d asked her to think on him and since then she hadn’t been able to do anything but think about him. He invaded her dreams and haunted her nightmares. Her lips burned for him. If she could have one dying request it would be that he kiss her on the mouth like he used to. Jayne hadn’t kissed her on the mouth in a long while. Hadn’t kissed her anywhere in a long while. She ached for him. But it was more than just physical. She missed the feeling of security and comfort that surrounded her whenever he was around. She missed the feeling of being the only person in the whole room that mattered to him. She missed being first with Jayne.
So why was she avoiding him? Kaylee didn’t even know the answer to the question. A thousand times the words had been on the tip of her tongue. ‘I want all of you, Jayne.’ They were just six little words that would make the whole world around her melt away into just him. So why couldn’t she say them? “’Cause I’m a scardy cat, that’s why,” she mumbled to herself.
“That so?” a voice in the doorway asked. Kaylee jumped and turned to see Jayne standing there.
“What’re you doin’ up so late?” she asked.
“Checkin’ on you. Mal’s been worried you’re gonna wear yourself sick staying up day and night. Sent me t’check on you,” Jayne shrugged.
“Why didn’t he come?” Kaylee asked.
“’Cause he ain’t the reason you’re not sleeping,” Jayne offered.
“And you are?” Kaylee asked with a cocked eyebrow.
“Maybe I’m hopin’,” he said, leaning against the door frame.
“I’m fine, Jayne,” she assured.
“Really now?”
“Yes really, just been keeping busy, haven’t been too tired lately.”
“You gotta sleep, Kaylee. You’ve been avoiding dinners cause we’re all there, you stay up until you can’t keep your eyes open no more. It ain’t right. You got me worried over you.”
“Mal didn’t send you, did he?” she asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
“Maybe?” was all he said. “You’ve been avoidin’ me, Kaylee. Like I got some sort of gorram disease.”
“I know,” she said, the smile slowly sliding off her face. “Jayne look…I…”
“You what? This is getting real old real fast. You don’t want me, fine we go back t’being like we were ‘fore all of this sex stuff started. But if you want me…want all of me…”
“I want you, Jayne.”
“What?” he asked, his eyes widening in surprised.
“I said, I want you, all of you,’ Kaylee whispered.
Jayne didn’t say anything just stepped forward and grabbed her face in his hands, pressing his lips to hers. Kaylee felt herself melting into his arms. Her hands snaked up around his neck and pulled him closer to her. She felt his lips deepening the kiss, his tongue sliding into her warm and welcoming mouth. She moaned and that only seemed to encourage Jayne on more. In one swift movement Jayne had lifted her up, wrapping her legs around his waist. She could feel his manhood pressing against her as she did. He’d been missing it as much as she had. But it was more than that, it was more than just the sex, it was the feeling that enveloped her when Jayne’s arms were wrapped around her. Like she was safe, like nothing was going to hurt her ever.
Jayne pulled back from the kiss, his eyes a dark stormy blue. “Kaylee, I’ve been waitin’ t’hear you say those ruttin’ words for weeks, why now?” he asked.
“Don’t know, maybe ‘cause I’m too tired t’be scared. But it’s what I want,” she said.
“You sure?”
“Hundred and ten percent sure. Been scared to say it is all, scared ‘cause it took me so long t’think ‘bout it. But I do…I want you.” Kaylee couldn’t help but smile at the grin that broke out across Jayne’s face. All of her worry and doubt just melted away. It wasn’t too late.
“You ain’t ever gotta be scared o’me, Kaylee girl,” he said, moving his mouth back towards her. Jayne turned and pressed her back against the engine room wall, grinding himself into her as he did. Kaylee let out a soft groan as his lips broke away from hers and began to trail down her jaw line and neck. He used one hand to support her while the other roamed it’s way up her shirt, cupping her breast and squeezing softly. The feeling of his hands on her got her tingly on all her nerve ends.
“Jayne,” she moaned out.
“Yeah, baby girl?” he asked, his free hand working to pull her shirt over her head now. Once she was free from the cloth she answered.
“It’s been a long time,” she breathed out.
“That it has,” he nodded, his fingers undoing the clasp of her bra and tossing it to the side with a flick of the wrist. He attached his mouth to her freed breast, sucking and licking the areola, gently grazing his teeth along the now hardened flesh. She couldn’t think straight with the way his warm tongue flicked against her nipple.
Jayne’s free hand massaged her breast for another few moments before it trailed down her bare skin, untying the arms of her coveralls from around her waist before carefully setting her down. Jayne paused and reached for the engine room door, closing it against any who might be passing by then turned his attention back to Kaylee who was already working herself out of her coveralls and pants.
Jayne was quick to shed his own clothes too and Kaylee watched in renewed awe as his arms flexed ever so slightly as he pulled his shirt over his head. She could feel her desire pooling between her thighs just looking at him. Jayne smiled a big toothy grin at her and she realized she was staring.
He was going awful slow and Kaylee was beginning to get anxious. Her hands darted out and began to work the buttons on his pants, opening them up and sliding the zipper down quickly. Jayne quickly shucked them off and looked at her. They were both free of their constraining clothes and Kaylee was ready to pop. It had been a long time since she had been with Jayne and she was more than a little anxious. He read her face and knew what she wanted. Grabbing her hips, he lifted her up against the wall again, this time pushing deep inside of her.
Kaylee felt him slide deeply in her, her eyes going a little wide at the feeling. It felt beyond just good, the mechanic was having trouble finding a word to describe it. “You alright there?” he asked, unmoving inside of her. She nodded and leaned her forehead against his. He took that as a sign and slowly began to thrust inside of her.
Kaylee gripped his well muscled arm and wrapped her legs tightly around him. It was hard to concentrate on anything but his thickness sliding in and out of her core. One hand supported her with his other moved between them, rubbing her sweet spot as he began to move faster. Kaylee closed her eyes and let the throbbing in her center go. She came screaming his name and Jayne wasn’t long after.
They stayed in that position for a long while after they had both come. Finally Jayne stepped back and slowly lowered Kaylee onto her wobby legs. She swayed for a moment but a firm hand gripped her hip. “You alright, girl?” he asked, a wicked grin spreading across his face. Kaylee smacked his shoulder and grinned back.
“Shiny, Jayne,” she said playfully. “Think we should go back t’my bunk and do that again.”
“Can’t argue with that,” Jayne said as he leaned down and picked up their discarded clothing, handing Kaylee hers. “Got a lot of time t’make up for, little girl,” he grinned.
