Kaylee sat numbly on her husband’s bed, licking her still moist lips after a moment of staring blankly at the wall. She could still taste Simon on her lips. The kiss he had given her before he left had been passionate; it was the only thing she and Simon still shared that had any meaning to Kaylee. Maybe it was because Jayne didn’t kiss on the mouth, she didn’t really know. It was the one thing from Simon she craved though and it was the last thing he had given her before he headed to town to pick up medical supplied.

Kaylee looked over at the clock. She was supposed to have met Jayne ten minutes ago in his bunk. She was still sitting in hers though, her head swimming from the kiss Simon had given her and her stomach doing flip flops over what River had said the day before. Kaylee always suspected that the genius knew about her little affair with the mercenary, but part of her hoped that Jayne and her had even fooled the mind reader. It was getting too dangerous now, someone was going to get hurt and that someone was going to be Simon. Kaylee couldn’t abide by that, she couldn’t keep doing what she was doing just because it felt good when she knew that Simon was going to get hurt by it. This had to stop.

Kaylee heard the bunk door hiss open and she stood immediately. It was too soon for Simon to be back and that could only mean it was one person. Jayne had some nerve coming to find her in her and Simon’s bunk. She was at the ladder by the time his feet hit the ground, keeping the metal rungs between her and her lover. She had to stop this.

“Not tonight, Jayne,” she whispered. Kaylee had meant it to come out a whole lot stronger and instead of ‘today’, ‘ever’. Of course she was lucky she got today out the way Jayne was looking tonight. His goatee was trimmed and cleaned up, he smelled like a mixture of cigars and soap, he must have just showered.

“What’s goin’ on, Kay?” he asked, looking around her small bunk and then focusing on her again.

“Can’t do this t’night,” she said softly.

“Somethin’ happen?” Jayne asked, his eyes darkening a little. He always got protective of her when it came to Simon. In a weird sort of way Kaylee enjoyed it. He moved around the ladder, but Kaylee side stepped so she could keep the metal bits between her and Jayne. It was her only defense against the man.

“It ain’t right, Jayne. River knows, won’t be long ‘fore everyone else does too. People are likely t’get hurt. I don’t wanna be the one t’blame when Simon’s heart gets shattered,” she mumbled out. “I can’t hurt him, Jayne.”

“Right ‘cause the doc is so concerned ‘bout hurtin’ you, is that it?” he sneered.

“Ain’t the same,” Kaylee shook her head. Jayne just scoffed and stared hard at her.

*flashback*

Kaylee stared down at the plate of cold food. She’d wanted to surprise Simon with a nice home cooked meal. Hard to surprise a man who didn’t show up when it was dinner time though. She’s spent the last of her coin too getting’ all the fresh food for the meal, Kaylee had wanted it to be perfect. Part of her thought she should go to the infirmary and drag him down to the table, her pride kept her from doing that though. He should have remembered and it hurt a lot that he didn’t. A person’s one-year anniversary was nothing to sneeze at.

“Oooooh…food,” Jayne’s voice said from the doorway as he entered the galley.

“Hey Jayne,” Kaylee sighed, standing up. Who was she kidding? Simon wasn’t coming. “Help yerself, most of its cold anyway.” Jayne sat down at the place Kaylee had set for Simon and the merc began to shovel the food in his mouth like he thought it might disappear in a moment. She smirked; glad at least someone would enjoy the food.

“This is some good cookin’, Kaylee. This for Simon and yours anniversary or somethin’?” he asked. Kaylee froze in clearing the table, her eyes fixating on Jayne. She swallowed but didn’t blink for a long moment.

“Jayne…you mean t’say that you remember that me and Simon had an anniversary t’day?” she asked slowly. The way Jayne eyed her reminded her the way he might eye an animal he thought was gonna attack him if he made any sudden movements.

“Yah…I remember,” he said just as slowly. Kaylee wanted to throw something.

“Can you tell me somethin’ Jayne?” she asked. He gave her an uncertain look before his eyes searched the room for an escape route.

“Sure, Kaylee,” he mumbled.

“How is it you can remember our anniversary but my gorram husband can’t?” Jayne didn’t have an answer and even if he did, Kaylee had already stalked out of the room leaving Jayne is silence with a room full of fresh food. He frowned and stared at the doorway where she had retreated. Fool doctor didn’t know what he had.

*end flashback*

Kaylee leaned her head against the cool metal of the ladder and stared up at Jayne between the rungs. “Simon’ll be back soon,” she whispered. “I think you should go.”

“You don’t love him,” Jayne shook his head. “Not in that way, anyhow.”

“I care ‘bout him, Jayne. Care ‘bout him too much t’hurt him like that. This. Is. Wrong.” Jayne reached around the ladder and took her hand, slowly pulling her around to him. Kaylee didn’t fight him, she should have, but she didn’t. The way his blue eyes held her, she couldn’t fight him.

“Jayne,” she whispered, but he didn’t let her talk. His mouth immediately started kissing along her jaw line, his lips trailing towards the nape of her neck. Kaylee had to hold onto his arm in order to stay upright the way he always made her knees buckle with his mouth. His hand moved to the bottom of her shirt, slowly sliding under the cotton cloth to feel her smooth stomach beneath.

“Tell me you want me t’stop,” he whispered, gently tugging on her earlobe with his teeth. Kaylee couldn’t form the word and in an instant she found herself lying flat on her back on her and Simon’s bed. Jayne’s hands worked at getting her pants down and she found herself lifting her hips to help him. The cool air hit her skin and for a moment she wondered why she had tried hiding from him in the first place? His fingers reached between her thighs, sliding into her warmth. Kaylee couldn’t suppress the moan as she arched her hips and licked her lips. They still tasted like Simon and she remembered why she had fought against this. She couldn’t stop it though; she didn’t want to stop it.

Hehe thanks, so glad you liked it darlin'. I liked the image the first line you brought up made. I have this vision in my head of just how Jayne would react and that was it in a nut shell. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

I like the flashback, it explains the start of the reasons why. Dare I hope there's more flashbacks coming?

Kaylee not wanting to hurt Simon is very in character but not being able to stop with Jayne is too. Because she's a creature that needs warmth and lots of it and he's providing it.

Hoping to see more soon *hint hint*
