Jayne stared down critically at his son, taking in his features. Boy looked just like him, well as much as a bald little cubby thing could look like Jayne Cobb. He had his mama’s eyes though; it was almost too hard to look at him with those eyes. “You name him?” Mal asked, breaking the mercenary’s concentration.
“Yeah, his name’s Davis. Named him after Kaylee’s pa...it was what she wanted,” Jayne said. He reached down and awkwardly picked up his son. He tried to mimic the way Mal had been holding him; it was harder than it looked.
“He’s a good lookin’ boy,” Jayne said, his voice breaking just for a moment. He cleared his throat and stared down at his baby. Davis didn’t make much noise, just tiny little breaths and sighs. He didn’t smell so bad as Jayne thought he might either. Holding the little boy in his arms though broke something inside of Jayne. Broke something that couldn’t be fixed, not that Jayne wanted anyone to fix it anyway. The mercenary moved to sit down, not trusting his legs to keep him upright anymore. It was too much. Jayne wanted to hate this little boy for what he had taken from him. He couldn’t though; Davis didn’t know what he had lost. He didn’t know his mama had died just for him.
“You gonna be alright?” Mal asked, watching Jayne careful. Always the gorram captain, Jayne though.
“Yeah Mal, I’m gonna be fine,” Jayne nodded. He didn’t say anything for a few moments, just stared down at Davis, rocking him gently in his arms. His son cooed up at him in satisfaction, bringing a small smile to the mercenary’s face.
“She woulda made a good mom,” Jayne said absently, letting Davis wrap his fist around one of his fingers.
“You’re gonna make a great father,” Mal replied, standing up and patting Jayne’s shoulder before heading off. Jayne didn’t put much stock into the captain’s words, didn’t think he could do as good a job as Kaylee could have. He didn’t say anything though, just let it be and let Mal walk off to be with Inara and pay his respects to Kaylee.
“Your mama loved you somethin’ fierce,” Jayne said once he and his boy were alone. He stared down at Davis, staring into the boy’s eyes was almost like looking right at Kaylee again. “Guess I’ll have t’love you twice as much t’make up for it.” He wanted to hate him, he just couldn’t. There was too much of Kaylee in Davis for Jayne to hate him.
