It was creeping in, slipping all around her. Kaylee could feel it crawling deep into her bones. She couldn’t sleep because the shadows moved too much. There were whispers all around her, and yet no figures for the voices to be coming from. It was cold inside of her no matter how warm the ship was, no matter how many blankets she piled on herself.

“Kaylee?” a voice asked. She looked up, trying to force a smile, force her façade to the surface. It was a weak attempt and hadn’t worked. She hadn’t really expected it to work. “Kaylee what’s in your hand?”

“I couldn’t sleep,” she whispered. She opened her palm and dropped the empty medicine bottle, the plastic container bouncing on the ground. She could feel the darkness surround her. At least completely enveloped in the black there wouldn’t be shadows that could hurt her. The darkness held her enemies, but it guarded her from them as well.

Simone leaned down and picked up the empty bottle, his eyes going wide. “Kaylee all the pills are gone. Where are all of the pills?”

“I couldn’t sleep,” she whispered again. There was a silent moment between them, Simon’s eyes searching hers for the answers he would never find.
