"Shuttle ain’t gonna make it, Zoe. Don’t got ‘nough in us t’make it back planet side, neither." Jayne crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back in the pilot's chair of the shuttle. He looked over at the first mate and tried to read her expression. It was impossible. "Zoe?"
"Yes, Jayne?"
"You hear what I said?" he asked.
"We ain’t gonna make it," she said simply.
"Won’t be much longer. Already cold as ice in this gorram boat," Jayne said with a grunt.
"We should stop talking then," was all Zoe would say.
"I suppose," Jayne responded. There was a long pause, the quiet was unsettling. When he saw Zoe shiver, he moved closer to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulder. They were silent and cold. Things were getting fuzzy around the edges. Little specs of dust were starting to take shape into different things. Little pretties with bright smiles, dancing ‘round his head.
"Zoe, you seein’ what I’m seein;?" he asked his voice softer than normal.
"The fairies?" she asked absently.
He supposed that’s what they were. Pretty little fairies moving around them as they fell asleep in the cold black. He felt Zoe’s head slump against his shoulder and looked down to see she was asleep. It was better that way. He kissed the top of her head. Always wanted to kiss Zoe. More than kiss really, she was a fine lookin’ woman. "Night, Zoe," he said, closing his eyes and letting the black take him too.
