“Kaylee girl,” Jayne whispered as he stepped into the room, Simon following closely behind. The mercenary watched as Kaylee made no acknowledgement of his entrance. Mal gave Jayne an apologetic look and stepped aside so the mercenary could be by his wife. There was silence once both Mal and Simon left the room to give the two of them a few minutes together.
Jayne picked up Kaylee’s hand and held it between his. Her fingers were freezing cold, her whole body was shivering. Jayne didn’t know what to do; he wasn’t cut out for this sort of thing. If someone hurt Kaylee, he could go a shoot them or something worse. But this…this he didn’t know what to do with. He brought her hand up to his lips and kissed it softly. “Kaylee?”
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
“No…no, bao bei, you ain’t got nothin’ t’be sorry ‘bout,” Jayne whispered. He leaned down and kissed her forehead. Her whole body tensed under the touch of his lips. “Kaylee?”
“I didn’t want t’be here no more,” she whimpered.
“I know, doc told me. I ain’t too happy ‘bout that,” Jayne said, leaning his forehead against hers. “Look at me, Kaylee.” Her eyes opened and stared up at him, Her eyes were bloodshot from crying and dark circles had begun to form under them.
“It’s gonna be fine,” he told her somberly.
“I lost the baby,” Kaylee murmured, her face contorting as emotion overwhelmed her. She tried to turn away from him but Jayne reached out and held her chin.
“S’okay, Kaylee girl. We can try again,” he assured.
“Go ‘way, Jayne,” she shook her head as she tried to pull away from him.
“What’re you doin’?” he asked, watching as she slid off the bed. He moved to her side as her knees went weak and she nearly fell to the ground. “Kaylee, you need t’lay down.”
“Leave me ‘lone,” she whispered, shoving him away. Jayne was surprised at the force as his back was pushed into the counter. “Don’t wanna see anyone right now, jus’ wanna be by myself,” she said, and started to move around towards the door. Jayne followed her, coming up behind her and wrapping his arm around her waist. Kaylee tried to pull away from him, but he kept his grip solid on her hip.
“Baby girl, can’t do that,” Jayne said, remembering Simon telling him someone needed to be with Kaylee at all times to make sure she didn’t try again. “Let’s get you laid back down.”
“No!” she cried, turning in his arms to get away, but he wouldn’t let go.
“Kaylee...Kaylee calm down,” Jayne pleaded.
“Calm down?” Kaylee whispered, her eyes going wide with something that resembled anger. Kaylee and anger didn’t usually go hand in hand but the look on her face was enough to startle him and give her the advantage as she pulled away. “I can’t,” she shook her head and tried to leave. Her knees buckled and Jayne leaned forward and grabbed her. He lifted her up and brought her back to the infirmary bed.
“Doc said some of them pills are inside o’you still. Gotta rest now. Can you do that?” he asked. Kaylee turned her face away from him, not answering. He let out a breath and grabbed a blanket to cover her up. Jayne grabbed a stool and pulled it up close to the bed as he took a seat, ready to watch her until she fell asleep.
