Kaylee’s hands shook as she pulled the threaded needle through Simon’s skin, listening to him hiss under his breath as she pulled the thread tight like he showed her. “I’m sorry,” she whispered when he cringed.
“No…you’re doing fine,” he assured. Kaylee nodded, taking a deep breath and pulling the needle through again. The wound on his stomach…it was so large, she was only half way done and already her stomach was turning with how much blood there was.
“Simon…” she breathed out, trying to keep her hands steady, forcing back the tears that threatened to spill onto her cheeks. “I can’t…I can’t do this.”
“You have to do this. There’s no one else. I’d do it but...”
“I know,” Kaylee nodded quickly. He could barley hold his head up to watch her while she sewed him up, there wasn’t any way he could have done it himself. Her fingers continued to suture the wound, blocking out the grimaces Simon was making. He was stronger then her, he hardly made a peep but a hiss now and then when she pulled too tight. She probably would have been blubbering like a big baby the whole time in his shoes.
When she had finished sewing the length of the wound, Simon instructed her how to knot the thread then laid his head back in the dirt. Kaylee looked at him, chewing on her lip. “Simon?”
“Yeah Kaylee?”
“Think they’re coming back?” she asked, her voice dropping to a soft whisper.
“They’ll be back,” he promised. His eyes were starting to close and Kaylee felt herself whimpering. She didn’t want him to go to sleep because then she would be all alone.
“Please don’t sleep,” she begged, knowing how selfish she was being.
“I’m sorry bao bei,” he whispered, his breathing deepening as his body went lax with sleep. Kaylee couldn’t stifle the sob as she backed herself up against the cave wall. The wind howled outside and for the first time in near an hour she spared a glance at the snow storm raging a few yards away from them outside the cave. The captain would be back for them, she knew he would. Reaching into her pocket, Kaylee pulled out her comm. She turned it to Serenity’s channel and attempted to contact the ship for what must have been the 20th time that night.
“Mayday…mayday. Cap’n, oh Buddha Cap’n please come in,” her voice broke as tear wracked her whole body. She cried, cried as hard as her body could, getting it all out while Simon was asleep. After awhile the sobbing stopped. It took a moment for her to collect herself. When she had a mostly clear her head, Kaylee crawled next to Simon and laid on the dirt ground next to. She wrapped her body around him, doing everything she could to keep him warm. It was going to be a long night.
