This wasn’t happening again. This couldn’t be happening again. Kaylee sat up and backed herself against the wall, looking around the room uncertainly. It was too dark to see much, but the things she could feel crawling around…maybe she didn’t want to see. “No, no, no, no,” she whispered, her voice barley audible.
Kaylee knew what she needed to do; she just didn’t have the energy to do it. She was so tired still, her entire body felt ready to rebel against her. Whatever they had done to her, they must have drugged her as well. But that wasn’t the part that worried her the most though. What worried her was the captain was gonna come looking for her and he wasn’t gonna find her, and he was gonna leave her again. She whimpered and buried her head into her arms for a moment. 30 seconds--she was giving herself thirty seconds to panic before she sucked it up and got to work.
The thirty seconds passed too quickly and by the time Kaylee reached the end, she knew she wasn’t done panicking, but she pushed it aside. Using the wall for aide, the mechanic pulled herself to her feet. Her hands searched around the wall to the low dirt ceiling, looking for a soft spot. After ten minutes of searching she found an area of dirt not so tightly packed as the rest.
Her fingers dove into the earth, pulling at it, letting it drop from above her. She knew how long this would take, how deep under ground she was. Kaylee ignored the numbness in her fingers, the blood under her nails and the fatigue that was beginning to overwhelm her. There wasn’t a light this time when she broke through the surface, but she knew she had reached the top when she could feel the cold winter air touching her face. “Thank god,” she breathed out, clawing the hole wide enough for her to fit.
Kaylee lifted herself through, breathing in the fresh, cold air. The breeze on her face nearly made her cry in relief. The mechanic tiredly dragged herself out of the hole. Once she had pulled herself completely free, she laid on the ground for a long moment. She wasn’t in the same spot as before, but it was a graveyard still.
Kaylee was collecting herself when a soft sound startled her. Her heard turned slowly to the side and for the first time she saw a man sitting up against a tree naught but a few feet away from her. He was asleep, snoring in fact. Why on earth would someone be asleep in a graveyard in the middle of the night? There was a gun lying across his lap as well. The realization dawned on her, it was her he had been waiting for.
As silently as she could, Kaylee pushed herself to her feet. He didn’t moved as she straightened and looked down at him. She had a couple of choices. She could run and pray he didn’t wake or she could try and take the gun and hope that he didn’t awaken. Kaylee looked around for any other armed men, but saw only the lone man. Licking her chapped lips she took a few steps forward. Her hand reached down as slowly wrapped around the very large gun, carefully lifting it out of his hands. When the gun cleared his body she let out a relieved sigh and slowly backed away.
Her shoe cracked on a twig and the man’s eyes flew open. Kaylee saw him reach for his gun only to find it missing and now in her hands. She started backing away, her eyes watching as he reached for his hip, pulling out a small hand gun. Before she could think she had his gun raised in her hand and fired several shots. One hit his shoulder and another his neck; the rest landing in the tree and ground near by. When he bloodied body slumped forward Kaylee turned and ran as fast as her legs would take her. She guessed she had just done murder, but she couldn’t think about that right now, she would have to think about it later.
