He was a bad man thinking about her like this. Couldn’t help it though, the way she smiled up at him, the way she would kiss him on the cheek. Hell, the way she called him ‘Cap’n’ made him want her more than was appropriate. She was a part of him, a part he had lost and he never thought he would recover. Seeing her walking around in those snug fitting coveralls, the way she’s smile at a person like they were the only person in the room, it had a way of undoing a man.
He shouldn’t have done what he had done. Kaylee wasn’t some innocent virgin, but she wasn’t wise to all the ways of the world either. She liked boys and she liked attention but she was so naive when it came to men. When Mal started showing her the attention she craved, she responded to it just like he knew she would. She would smile at him and even flirt a little, though flirting was just a part of Kaylee’s nature. Out in the black, away from her family for the first time in a long time, it made a person vulnerable. It made them feel alone and if there was one thing Kaylee Frye didn’t like feeling, it was alone.
So he had comforted her, hugged her just a mite longer than he should have. Kissed her forehead and laid his hands on her hips. She thrived under the attention, homesickness banishing itself from her soul with the way he made her feel. Of course it had all still just been friendly then. Brotherly almost, only there were no brotherly thoughts going through his mind when he touched her.
Mal had wanted it, wanted it so bad he couldn’t think straight. How long had it been since he’d had a woman? But it was more than just that. There was something different about Kaylee, something special and to Mal, being with her was more than just being with any woman. Maybe he had taken it too far when he’d found her alone in the lounge, looking sullen over a cup of coffee. The way her hair fell around her face as she stared off absently in thought, he hadn’t been able to help himself.
“Kaylee?” he had asked, her head popping up at his voice. He watched as she forced a smile on her lips. He’d never seen someone force such a believeable smile on their features as Kaylee just had. It lit up her entire face.
“Yeah, Cap’n?” she asked, adjusting in her seat. Mal moved to sit next to her, looking her face over.
“You doin’ alright?” he asked.
“I’m fine, Cap’n, just a little lonely is all,” she shrugged, holding her coffee tighter to her. Mal nodded and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her closer. He was too close to her, he could smell that mixture of engine grease and shampoo in her hair, it was enticing like nothing he had ever smelt. Kaylee leaned into the embrace, resting her head on his shoulder. She sighed contently and Mal turned his head placing a lingering kiss on her forehead before staring down at her face. It was hard feeling her warm body so close t his, knowing they were alone…
“It gets a little lonely in the black sometimes. We all just gotta stick together, keep each other company,” Mal said. He could feel her nod and sigh again. “Kaylee?” he whispered. Her head tilted up to look at him and before he could stop himself he pressed his lips to hers. He could feel his mechanic freeze a little and so he pulled back.
“Cap’n?” she asked nervously.
He didn’t know what to say. He would never want to hurt her or scare her off, but he wanted this so badly he couldn’t see straight. “We’re all lonely, Kaylee…please,” he begged, resting his forehead against hers. Her eyes tried to read him, hesitating to make a decision before slowly titling her lip uncertainly back up to his. Mal’s hand cupped her cheek, pulled her face closer to his as his mouth devoured hers. She responded this time, her body leaning into his. She craved being touched as much as he did, he could sense it in her. Reluctantly Mal pulled back and stood, pulling Kaylee to her feet. She looked confused as he pulled her towards his bunk, kicking open the hatch door and stepping down onto the first ladder rung.
When he looked up at her eyes he could see she was still unsure. “You can say no,” he told her. Kaylee chewed on her lip before slowly moving down the ladder after him. When they both reached the bottom, Mal reached for the zipper on her coveralls, sliding it down quickly with need. He knew he shouldn’t be rushing things, he should be savoring this, but he had dreamt of it too long to have much patience. Mal undressed her quickly and pulled off his clothes as well.
Once he had them both undressed, Mal grabbed her bare hip and pulled her against him. He moved her towards the bed and looked up into her eyes. He saw how worried, confused and overwhelmed she was. He could also see the desire casting a shadow against all of those things as she took in his bare form. Mal held onto that. “Tell me no if you don’t want this,” he urged. She said nothing and so laid her on his bed, crawling between her thighs.
When it ended she had smiled at him and snuggled close, but Mal couldn’t help but let the guilt overwhelm him. He knew she was just lonely and homesick, knew he had taken advantage over her, but he just couldn’t help himself. He was a bad man and he hated himself for what had happened, but he had wanted this so badly.
“You alright?” he asked, stroking her hair lazily and watching as her eyes fluttered closed.
“Shiny, Cap’n,’ she whispered, a hint of a genuine smile touching her lips. At least she didn’t hate him. He may have been a bad man but at least Kaylee didn’t hate him and if she didn’t hate him that was something he could live with.
