Her hands shook with such intensity that Kaylee wasn’t able to hold the mug of hot tea in her hands without spilling on herself. Simon reached out, taking the cup out of her hands and setting it on the galley table. “Kaylee?” he asked.
She didn’t look at him, instead stared at her now empty hand, completely lost in thought. “It’s okay to be scared, bao bei,” Simon whispered, settling himself closer to her. He reached a hand out, cupping her cheek and turning her face so he could see her eyes. The contact broke her out of her trance and she almost looked startled to see the doctor there.
“Simon?”
“It’s gonna be okay, Kaylee,” he assured. Her face twisted with uncertain emotion. She turned and looked at the mug of tea resting on the table as though it would offer the solution to some unspoken question. “Please look at me,” Simon pleaded.
“I’m sorry I just…” her voice trailed off as she turned and looked at him.
“It’s okay to be scared,” he told her softly.
“Scared? I’m terrifed!” Kaylee exclaimed, feeling her stomach do flip flops at the mere thought of what was in store for her. Simon chuckled and wrapped his arm around her shoulder, pulling her close and kissing the top of her forehead.
“You’re going to make a wonderful mother,” he whispered into her hair.
“Ya think?” Kaylee asked meekly. Simon laughed again and nodded.
“This is what you wanted, Kaylee,” he said, pulling back so he could see her face. Her eyes glowed for a moment and a smile twitched at the edge of her lips. The shock of the news was finally wearing off. They had been trying for near three month now, but to actually hear that she was pregnant…
“It really was,” she agreed. “How can you know I’ll be a great mama though?”
“Because I know you,” he whispered. “You’re already a wonderful wife, I can’t imagine you being anything but a wonderful mother.”
Kaylee’s cheeks colored and she leaned forward pressing her lips to his. When she pulled back Simon watched a mischievous look pass over Kaylee’s eyes. She scooted closer to him and leaned her head on his shoulder. “I get chocolate, right?” she asked. Pregnancy couldn’t be so bad if you got chocolate.
“Yes you do,” Simon nodded, pulling her close.
“Good. I’ll have the baby and you get to tell the Cap’n ‘bout how we’re expectin’,” Kaylee smirked. The fear and nervousness was wearing away and being replaced by the joy and excitement of knowing a life was growing inside of her.
“What?” Simon asked, looking down at her in surprise. “Mal won’t harm you when he finds this out, you’re with child.”
“Don’t argue with a pregnant woman, Simon,” River scolded from the doorway. Both Kaylee and Simon looked up in surprise. Kaylee’s face beamed brighter at the addition of River in the room and both women shared a knowing look. “And I want to be Auntie River,” River declared.
“Auntie River it is,” Simon smiled at his sister.
Author's note: Yeah, wtf did this come from?*giggles* no clue. Guess I can't torture Kaylee ALLLLLLLLLL the time.
