This is a rectangular version of the shoulder patch seen at the Battle of Serenity Valley in the pilot. It might be unit insignia, but who knows? All we know for sure is that it's an Independent symbol of some kind, so I'm running with it.

That's pretty cool. The yellow and the green are reminiscent of the colors adopted by many African countries following their independence. I like the whole upside down star part.

Thanks to eBay & having no life, I now have my very own piece of the ship. I don't know which of the two microphones this is, but it has Serenity crew DNA all over it!
