There was a bump. Jayne woke from his sleep and wondered, what was that? After wiping the sleep from his eyes Jayne thought about it more, did I just hear that bump or feel it, or both? Maybe I oughta investigate… Nah, this ain’t my gorram ship… Let Zoë bother. Jayne tried to get back to sleep, but was unable. He then looked towards his prized guns and sighed, “Well Vera, you up for a walk?” He got up, donned his slacks, and slipped on his combat boots, but didn’t bother lacing them, before grabbing Vera. Jayne checked to make sure she were locked and loaded, but of course she was, so he climbed the ladder out of his room.
When he got to the hallway above his room Jayne noticed that Zoë had heard or felt the bump too and was investigating. Jayne whispered to her, “What is going on?”
Zoë looked at Jayne and answered, “I don’t know.” Then she walked into the bridge and scanned the internal sensors. After a moment she added, “It must be nothing, the sensors show everything is okay.” Another bump reverberated through the ship.
Jayne looked worriedly at Zoë before speaking, “Well, that nothing is beginning to freak me out.”
“You’re not the only one.”
“Why’d Mal have to take off with Inara, Kaylee, and Moon Brain now?” asked Jayne as the two began walking down to the cargo bay.
“Inara had to take River to the Bertram Institute where no man is allowed, and Captain Reynolds is taking Kaylee shopping for parts,” answered Zoë as she led Jayne around a corner.
“What do Inara and Moon Brain have to do at the institute?”
“You don’t want to know,” answered Zoë.
Jayne raised his eyebrows and replied, “Yea I do, that’s kinda the reason I asked.”
Zoë stopped and looked directly at Jayne, “No, you really don’t want to know.”
“I guess maybe not,” was his reply as they entered the bay. The two crewmates noticed some commotion by the weight set, so Zoë motioned for Jayne to cover her. Jayne clicked his safety off, and Zoë chambered a round into her .30-30, as the two sneaked their way to investigate. When they got there they saw Simon laying on the bench press in pain.
The two crewmates lowered their weapons and Zoë asked, “What’s going on here Doctor?”
Simon grimaced, “I was trying to work out and I guess the barbells were too heavy so one of the plates hit the grating.”
“We heard two bumps,” interrogated Zoë.
“I decided to try a lower weight but I must have hurt myself the first time, because it happened again.”
“Well you should of asked first before using the weights Dumbass,” chimed in Jayne.
Simon stopped grimacing for a moment to look at Jayne before asking, “I thought these weights were for the crew, why do I have to ask?”
Jayne looked like the Doctor missed the point, “Ask for a spotter dipstick.”
