The end...or maybe just another beginning.

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 4198    RATING: 9    SERIES: FIREFLY

Zoe found Mal on the bridge, alone. She closed the hatches, and locked them. Mal heard the bolts click.

He waited.

"What are you going to do about the Shepherd?" Zoe asked.

"You mean, about Shepherd Book?" Mal replied.

"He's not Shepherd Book."

"Mmmm. You mean, am I going to throw him out the lock?"

"I mean, are you going to let him stay?"

"Ain't asked him whether he even wants to stay."

"What if he does?"

Mal breathed deep, looking out at the vast black. "Shepherd's a member of this crew," he finally said.

"He's a creation of the Alliance, most probably their tool."

"Could be."

"You going to let him stay with us?"

"If he wants to."

Zoe took her own turn, staring out. "I don't think that's safe."

"Nothing we do is safe."

"There's such a thing as an unnecessary risk."

"Yes... yes, there is."

"Letting him stay is an unnecessary risk. Especially since he's so much like the Shepherd we knew, who knew us."

"Keeping that baby is an unnecessary risk, but you're going to do it." He shouldn't have said that. He knew it the second it was out of his mouth, but it was too late then to bite his tongue. He didn't dare look at her now. "What I know is this. I got to believe something. And right now, what I believe is that Shepherd Book is a member of this crew, until I change my mind or until he chooses not to be."

So there it was. Maybe it was the end.

Maybe it was just another beginning.

And Mal speaks what we've all been thinking about Book, ever since you introduced the facial reconstruction machines in the last story.

Nice ending. Now we find out if this malicious, or not.

If it was good enough for Mal Reynolds it's good enough for me to say. :)

Oooh, way to set things up for a gorram sequel! I liked that Mal didn't automatically side with having Book leave his boat and make his own way. Part of that I'm thinking is his own affection for our original Book but also I suspect it is a deep seated desire to find out more about him. Who and what he is. Really liked this story, shiny! Ali D :~)

Nutluck: the next story is in my head, still. There actually IS a next story, but whether it will actually be written is still up in the air...

So the door's wide open for the sequel.
Thanks so much, nauticalgal, this story has been a great read. Love it that you've managed to bring back both Wash and now Book. These characters were too fine to leave behind just because they got killed off in the BDM. Clever you for figuring out how to bring them back to play.

Then knock it out of your head and onto paper so to speak. Sorry but you left us no choice, now you have to write a sequel. It's as simple as that. So just give in and get to writing. :)
