Mal was never one to celebrate Unification Day. Mostly, he just likes to forget about it, however he can. LANGUAGE & ADULT CONTENT WARNING. (See rating.)

CATEGORY: FICTION    TIMES READ: 3201    RATING: 8    SERIES: FIREFLY

He made no secret of what he was: the brown coat, the military bearing, the red scarf at his throat, the desolate look in his eyes. Even if she'd been untrained, naive and blind, she would have known. Most of the rest of the planet was celebrating. He was sombre.

"Come in, Sgt. Reynolds. Would you like some tea?" She's a smart woman, he thinks. Knows her role.

"No, thank you, ma'am."

He'd let her take his coat and scarf and hang them up, and talk to him, going through her pretty, meaningless little rituals. Oh, but she was a lovely thing. Dripping in opulence and grace, the trappings of the conquerers, the regime he'd fought against, seen friends die opposing. The regime she'd sold herself to for wealth, protection and comfort.

No matter how beautiful she was, no matter how she soothed the raw wounds on his body and soul, he couldn't forget that.

He had her touch herself before he would lay a hand on her, watched her slim fingers disappear into her body, standing at the end of her bed, his face like stone, his cock harder still. He had her touch herself, shudder, stretch a little, because he didn't want her tight and pristine. He didn't want to forget he was fucking an Alliance whore.

He stayed with her until U-Day was done with for another year, twisting his hands in her dark curls, fucking her until they were both sweaty, gasping and weak. He lost the day in her, pushed the ghosts away as he pushed into her, let her cries and whimpers drown out the screams of the dying that still echoed in his mind.

Finally, he left her, kissing her hands, her lips, her forehead, whispering apologies and closing the shuttle door behind him.

UnchartedOutlaw: I'm new to the system. It has you rate the fics, etc, as you post them... Thanks for drawing it to my attention, though.

UNCHARTEDOUTLAW

Sorry...I'm wasn't trying to be prudish or anything. I just had gotten through a whole issue like this with some students at work. Long story and not worth repeatin', but I'm probably just hyper-aware of how things could be taken now.

PHAEDRA

I really enjoyed your piece. I thought it was well written with a morose lyricism that appeals to cynics like myself. As to the content and the way its articulated, no its not for children, but of course then neither is firefly. The show was pretty violent, and unlike either the Buffy or Angel verse the violence wasn't mediated by fantasy. Everytime Mal shot someone down that was an "actual" human life being lost not a monster. Moreover misogeny and the objectification were constant themes the show struggled with that your piece appropriately hits upon. If Joss had but a dollar for everytime Mal used the term whore, he could have produced the show himself without Fox's backing. The beauty of the show was that it was filled with imperfect and at times unlikable characters struggling to get by in a flawed verse. Your story captures those themes perfectly. All around an excellent piece. Plus should any children happen upon it I'm pretty sure it won't be the first time they run into the dreaded F word nor the concepts of masterbation or prostetution.

Very nice very nice indeed! I souly agree with Phaedra... (and, might I add, what she said was very eloquently written!)

If kids don't want to read it they won't. But you must condsider that they see and hear worse every day from the radio and TV. So I suppose that this wouldn't be too much for them to handle...

In searching back through the bluesunroom, I read this again, and discovered much to my chagrin I realized I must not have ever commented on this, though I've read it many times before! Shame on me!

SO, here I am to tell you, finally, how much i like this piece. Bleak and dark and sad and so very much a possibility.. just heartwrenchingly lovely.
