At last! An article about Firefly in a newspaper read by other people than just TV geeks like us ;-). Found in this week-end's edition of "Libération". It was written because the series aired in here for the first time today.

Bon, en vrai, les trois colonnes font 16,5 cm de largeur et 9,5 cm de hauteur. C'est pas géant, mais c'est pas un simple entrefilet.

le createur de 'Buffy' ..I'm gonna go on a limb and say that translates loosely as...'the creator of Buffy', or maybe 'the creature is Buffy '. Been a while since HS French.

Series. By the creator of "Buffy", joss Whedon.

"Firefly", the space/time of a western [pun intended because of the double meaning of espace]

All series creators a bit famous have know a bitter failure. You can ask Steven Brohco: more than half of his projects were abandonned along the way. Like so many others, Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, worshiped like a messiah in Hollywood, was smacked bare-bottomed in front of everyone.

[Argh! have to fly! maybe petitrhino can take over - or I'll do the rest when I'm back home]

Just one year ago, Firefly was cancelled (cancellation in the middle of the season) by the network Fox. From the beginning, things had started rather badly. Whedon had planned to launch the series with a double episode, opening on a long and dark flash-back. Fox didn't want that. Cheers, then, for "Série Club", which broadcasts this double episode by way of introduction. You discover sergeant Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) in the years 2400-ish in a fierce war where his side gets a hiding. Six years later, on board of his ship, Serenity, you find him in the middle of an act of piracy. With some friends, they are a smugglers gang à la Han Solo. But Firefly isn't a clone of Star Wars, it's a western. Each planet is a dusty city inhabited by adventurers whores in crinoline dresses, handgun pros, bounty hunters and preachers. As a background, the omnipresent myth of the last frontier, of an interstellar West to be conquered.

Ok, my HS French instructors will all drop dead so they can roll over in their graves, but here goes (with large doses of help from babelfish):

All the creators of famous series have known bitter failure. It is enough to ask Steven Bochco, who has had over half of his projects left by the side of the road. Like so many others, Joss Whedon, the creator of Buffy, worshipped like a Messiah in Hollywood, was spanked in front of everyone.

Just a year ago, Firefly was "canceled" (cancellation in the course of the season) by the Fox channel. From the start, things began rather badly. Whedon had planned to launch the series on a double episode, opening on a lengthy flash-back. Fox did not want that. Cheer then for "Series Club, which broadcasts this double episode by way of introduction.

One discovers sergeant Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) in the year 2400 after a ferocious war during which his side takes a beating. Six years later, on his vessel, Serenity, one finds him in the midst of an act of piracy. With some friends, they form a band of smugglers like Han Solo.

But Firefly is no clone of Star Wars, it is a western. Each planet is a dusty city of adventurers, whores in crinoline dress, revolver aces, bounty hunters, and preachers. In background, the ever-present myth of the last frontier, an Interstellar West to conquer.

The end of the series, with three episodes filmed but not aired, angered Whedon fans and resulted in the boxed DVD set. It was so successful that a full-length movie, based on the series, is now actually in post-production. It was an ironic reversal of situation for Whedon, whose largest successes, Buffy, had the opposite fate. In 1992, he had writtenthe story of the film, directed by Fran Rubel Kuzui, before taking over, five years later, its adaptation for televiaion.

At 41 years old, Whedon seems to now be devoted essentially to the cinema, planning to write and direct Wonder Woman for 2006. The son and grandson of television writers, the young Joss seems about to leave the nest.

I have found Yosaffbridge
When I went to London for the convention Starfury: The White Room I kept seeing these signs in the Tufnell Park area. I guess for Londoners it's an old story but I found it funny enough take a picture.
