BLUE SUN ROOM FAN FICTION - HUMOR
A young compy pines away. This can't possibly lead to something going wrong....
CATEGORY: FICTION TIMES READ: 3567 RATING: 9 SERIES: FIREFLY
A/N: I don't own 'em, I just play with 'em.
For reference: Annie is a compsognathus (or 'compy' for you Jurassic Park fans), which had a mild sedative in its saliva. This makes Annie naturally suited for medical work.
I originally wrote this without thinking about human analogues, but after reading it over, I realized that Annie sounds a lot like Kaylee pining over Simon, only Annie has Simon's job. This amuses me on some level.

Annie quickly bit Julia on the leg once more to administer anesthetic, before activating the hot-glue gun. Indeed, evolution had been kind to saurian physiology, allowing skin and bone to be healed with the simple application of epoxy. After a brief rest, Julia would fully recover from Plan G and be ready to reclaim her place in the dinosaur ranks.
Privately, Annie found it somewhat ironic that she had so much in common with the human doctor - the one Lucy and Steggy referred to as "stuffy." A late addition to the dino strike team, she was their newly minted medic, untried and inexperienced in battle, carrying no weapons but a well stocked glue gun and relaxing saliva. And like her mammalian counterpart, she could not fathom how they'd survived this long without her. It seemed every plan from their leader resulted in more casualties. At least she wasn't patching up Monroe this time.
Oh, Monroe. Annie's reptilian heart skipped a beat just thinking about his spindly little arms and long, sharp teeth. She'd loved him the moment she'd laid beady eyes on him, with his fierce attitude and obvious loyalty to the dino cause. True, she'd joined up as a healer and had a natural talent for stitching up injured comrades, but she liked to think that she was being guided by the hand of the cute and funny god, and was meant to find her true love on a constantly raging battlefield. She knew it was cliche for a scavenger to be attracted to the strongest carnivore in the pack, but she was sure it was more than just cheap genetics.
They'd first met immediately after he'd returned from the aborted Plan E. Monroe was in a temper, cursing the Fates that had allowed the insolent humans to interfere with his mission. He had barely acknowledged her when Steggy introduced her as their new field medic. Steve and Lucy had welcomed her warmly, and she had promptly fixed Lucy's foot. But Monroe had remained aloof. She'd finally gotten him talking one night as they sat around the warmly glowing proximity monitor. Monroe had hesitantly discussed his family and how he'd had to leave them behind in the toy bin on Boros; a younger brother who was thinking of joining up this next year, an even younger sister waiting on her big brother's return. His parents remained above the fighting, choosing not to take sides in an unwinnable war.
Annie had likewise told him of her childhood: a young compy growing up poor on the outskirts of Whitefall, with no options but to take the first ride that came along. Her medical training was all vocational, helping her family scrape by as they were moved from store to store, until the fateful day when the cute and funny god had smiled upon her. She knew at that moment that she and Monroe were meant to be soulmates, forever joined in their triumphant battle against the human oppression. Surely the cute and funny god had meant it to be.
She had wished him well as he left for Plan F, favoring him with a toothy smile and a sunny wave, promising that she'd personally attend to any injury he might receive. He nodded gravely at her, pleased at her dedication to the mission: "Well said, Annie! Your addition to our number pleases us greatly, and your skills are above reproach! You will serve us well in our time of need!" Oh, he had such a way with words! Surely he would prevail in his task, and would return to her in fine spirits, ready to kiss her with cold-blooded passion!
But instead Monroe had grown distant again, troubled by the failure of both Plan F and Plan G. Now he spent all his time in the command tent, going over options and plans with Steggy. She remained outside, quietly conversing with Steve and Lucy, while her heart was in the tent with Monroe. If only he would notice her! Surely there must be something she could do to garner his affections? Perhaps a small token of her appreciation? Yes! That would be an ideal plan!
Annie climbed to the top of the flight stick, surveying the large, blinking land for an appropriate object to gift to Monroe. Suddenly, she spied it! Yes! It was a large, shiny lever, boldly emblazoned with unreadable words and painted a bright red, as if it knew the burning pain in her very heart! Surely it was a sign, and this would be the item that awakened Monroe's attentions!
Climbing down, Annie quickly approached her prize, eyeing it critically for flaws. She found none. It was perfect. She gently reached down and grabbed it in her teeth - must be careful not to bite through it! - and pulled....

Mal ran his hand over his face again, as Kaylee put down the extinguisher and darkly muttered something in Chinese while leaving. Mal finally looked up and sighed.
"I find it odd that I keep askin' you this type of thing, Wash, but tell me - without the use of dinos this time - why the hell we havin' a fire drill at 3AM?"
