Betrayal
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

A message is delivered. Warning: This story contains rape. It is not described, but it happens between the paragraphs. If you do not want to read anything about that, you may not want to read this.

CATEGORY: FICTION TIMES READ: 3536 RATING: 9 SERIES: FIREFLY

Rating: R for Rape (not described) Word Count: 598 Spoilers: None Author’s Note: This is probably the darkest fiction I have written to date. It is not happy. A rape occurs. It is not described, but I’m warning you now, if you don’t want to read anything about that, you may not want to read this. I honestly don’t know where this came from, except that a book I was converting at work yesterday had a rape in it, which probably put the topic on my mind.

Betrayal by 2x2

She invites him into her shuttle like she has dozens of times before.

They exchange pleasantries, but as they continue to talk and he still hasn’t revealed his reason for coming, a surprising uneasiness begins to creep into her thoughts. She dismisses them at first - she knows him too well, he’s above suspicion - but the feeling persists. Though it hasn’t been a concern before, she is acutely aware that they are the only two on the ship right now. Then she notices something in his eyes she’s never seen before and suddenly he’s standing far too close.

“I have a message for you,” he says, and she can feel his breath as the expression on his face changes - hardens - and the implications of his words sink in.

She realizes too late that she really doesn’t know him at all.

She runs then, desperately, for the hidden, cold secret she’s never had to use before, but he’s faster. She strikes out, her training instinctively directing her limbs to act while her brain is still too numb with shock to think, but she is outmatched by his skill. Without effort he repels her attack; the force of his blow knocks the breath from her lungs and she crumples, clutching her stomach, fighting to draw air into her frozen lungs.

He picks up the box that holds the secret and opens it, a smile that isn’t his twisting his face as he looks at her. He closes it again and sets it on the floor, then brings his foot down on it with a violent crash of his heel, wood splintering and glass shattering as the box and syringe it contains are destroyed. All the while his eyes hold that ‘something’ she can’t name and can’t believe she hasn’t seen before now.

He crosses the shuttle and closes both hatches, securing and locking them firmly. Then he turns back and unbuttons his shirt methodically, folding it carefully and setting it on her tea table before coming for her.

He grasps her arm tightly as she continues to gasp for breath; yanks her up and shoves her to the bed. Fear and despair engulf her with the realization that she can’t escape them, that there is no escape, even out here. Oh, Mal, she cries out in her mind, but pushes that thought away. She doesn’t want him connected with this, what’s about to happen, in any way.

Then he’s pushing her on her stomach, a hand in the middle of her back as he rucks up her skirts and steps between her legs.

After, she curls into herself, her eyes staring at nothing, numb and unseeing.

“Remember who your masters are, and whom you answer to,” he says then, standing naked in the middle of her shuttle. She keeps her eyes averted - she doesn’t want to offer any challenge by making eye contact; more important, she doesn’t want to see him.

“You’ve forgotten you’re not free.” There’s no menace in his voice, but she hears it clearly just the same. He pulls up his pants, fastening the front and reaches for his shirt, does up each button carefully, calmly, tucks it into his pants. He walks to the hatch and pauses, turns to look back at her, the smile of Book the Shepherd on his face again.

“If you tell him, I’ll have to kill him,” he says, the tone of his voice an incongruous match with the threat of his words. Then, he opens the doors and exits, and she is left, shivering and alone.

GAHBOOK!!!!!!!

Translation: Gosh, amazingly it was Book.

So freaking perfect... I like it.

I like it. Unexpected and hints at layers and intrigue without actually getting into details.

Thank-you! I have to admit, even I don't fully know the details behind all that, but something was there as I was writing it, so who knows, maybe I'll explore it later!

Araglas,
The 'secret' was in reference to the mysterious sryinge that Inara had in the episode 'Serenity', she takes it out when there is the threat that they will be boarded by Reavers, and much speculation has abounded to it's actual purpose. I don't know what it is myself, but I thought it was interesting that Inara's first instinct was to run for it...

So freaking perfect... I like it.

Wow. Thank-you so much!

KAYNARA

wow, powerful stuff. i love how you kept her attacker a secret till the very end. of course the whole thing begs explanation: did book and inara know eachother pre-Serenity? how does inara deal in the aftermath? does mal find out? if you're of the mind to write a sequel...;)

great fic!

Uh....shit? This some dark stuff, 2x2, and I am interested in seeing some more. Like its temporal setting and the reason behind the need for Book, someone who seemingly would have done this in an earlier part of his life, to rape Inara on behalf of...the Guild? The Alliance?

A sequel would certainly add to this pleasantly disturbing fic you have here.

Dark as it is I just can't see Book (or whoever Book is really) doing this to Inara. I mean he doesn't, not ever never. Ali D :~)

Amdobell: sorry :o(

Kaynara and BEB: Sequel? I don't know... this just kinda popped into my head... going into detail would be venturing down a long dark road I think, and I'm not sure I'd want to play there that long... but, one never knows when inspiration might strike! I can say that, no, Book and Inara did not know each other pre-Serenity, that much I know for sure... the rest? I have no idea my own self yet... I'll let you know if something else ever comes out of it though! Thanks!!

History of an Object
There’s no reason to keep it, damaged as it is. Save one. Doesn’t matter that it’s finer than any other cup on the ship, even with the crack. Doesn’t matter that it would never hold liquid again without some of it seeping through. Burning your fingers. Was only one reason he still has the cup.

Five Years' War
The night was warm. Clouds, low on the horizon, blue black in the last light of the setting sun. Nothing but the breeze and the buzz of the cicadas breaking the stillness. A perfect evening.

She let out a breath, saying nothing for a long moment before she raised her eyes again. “There are some things I want you to know,” she said softly. “Things I want you to understand.”

Much as he wished he could ignore it, he could see it was important to her that he know whatever it was she wanted to tell him. He knew he wouldn't have let himself see it in the past, but that weren't where they were anymore, or at least, not where they wanted to be, either of them. Their relationship had changed, was changing, and he weren’t so stupid he didn’t recognize that. He didn't know that he wanted to know it, much less understand it, but she was reluctant enough to talk about any aspect of her life as it was; could be he might ought not stop her when she wanted to.

Unlucky at Cards...
“I… You can’t be that lucky!” Mal moaned as Inara beat him again, laying out her cards with a flourish.

The Slower Path: The One Less Traveled By - Part 14 - Sequel to Regrets
They fell silent again, struggling to find the ease that they had found, before; before the argument that had almost ended things.

"I feel like-," she started.

"This is-," he said at the same time.

They looked at each other. "Awkward," they both said, laughing lightly.

The Mood That Passes Through
He felt the first trembling shudder go through her, heard her breath hitch and felt her fingers grip his skin; knew it was comin', the wave that was cresting the walls she'd built to hold it back, whatever it was. Knew they were about to come crashing down around her. The first sob still hurt though, still lanced through his heart like a searing hot blade to hear her make that sound.
