Similarities between Han Solo and Malcolm Reynolds:

Both wear pants with a stripe down the side Han's are grey/blue with a red stripe. Mal's are tan with a brown stripe.

Both were former military officers Han served the Empire long ago. Mal fought the Alliance as an Independent.

Both hate the present government system Han avoids the Empire and damages it when he can. Mal does the same for the Alliance, but he likes to pick fights with them. Both wear their handguns low on their hips Han carries a blaster on his right hip in a low holster. Mal carries a sort of long-barreled pistol in the same way.

Both use witty comments and quips to lighten the mood in dangerous situations Both are captains of smuggling ships The Millenium Falcon and the Firefly Serenity are both smuggling ships with hidden compartments. Also, both are named after living creatures.

Both have very loyal and strong first mates Chewie would do just about anything for Han and has great muscle and aim. Zoe also backs her captain up in those ways. Also both Chewie and Zoe disagree with their captains on occasion and joke with them.

Both love their crew and passengers even if they don’t voice it Han says demeaning and harsh things to and about his passengers, but helps them out just the same. Mal claims he helps his passengers only because they are 'crew' but it is more than that.

Both come up with ingenious plans to get out of situations

Both are in love with glamorous and important and beautiful women Han is in love with Leia, the princess of Alderaan. She is beautiful and rich. Mal loves Inara who is a glamorous companion.

Both are good in a fight Each are a good shot with their weapons and good with their fists.

Both got tortured Han was tortured by Vader. Mal was tortured by Niska. He died though, and was revived.

Both are rakishly handsome Harrison Ford and Nathan Fillion are both considered handsome and have a fan base. (even if Ford is old now…)

Both are called most commonly by a three letter name Han Solo= Han. Malcolm Reynolds= Mal

Both love their ship Both are worried about their ship and show affection to it. Both speak to it.

Both have a ship that almost everyone else thinks is junk Leia, Luke, and Ben all criticize the Falcon. Zoe's first reaction to Serenity is incredulous.

Both get into trouble on a regular basis Both live lives of crime that lead to run-ins with the government

Both are protecting fugitives Han helped rescue Leia from the Empire and keeps Luke from them also. Mal carries River and Simon and protects them.

Both give the pretense that getting rich is the main goal, people are second

Both risk their lives for others

Both ride animals at some point Han rides a in The Empire Strikes Back. Mal rides a horse on more than one occasion. Both do so well.

Both drink The first time we see either of them is in a bar. Han on Tatouine and Mal in 'The Train Job' (k, so not the first unless you watched it on TV) They both tend to get into drunken brawls even though neither of them ever seem to become inebriated.

Both save the day when others cannot Death Star battle, 'Safe'

Both enjoy a good fight They fight with smiles, loud joyful yells and witty comments.

Both stand up for the honor of the woman they love, but degrade her themselves Han protects Leia but calls her 'Your Highness' and the like in a mocking manner. Mal fought Atherton Wing because of a comment to Inara, but calls her a whore nearly daily.

Both cannot abide useless people Han gets fed up with C-3PO. And Mal gets angry with people who don’t pull their weight or do what he says.

Neither minds cursing at regular intervals
