There was a part of his mind that warned him not to give weight to anything that Inara had said to him in Saffron’s presence. That evil snake had played him like he was a hand of Tall Card, and she held all the plums. Played him, played Inara too, and played the both of them off each other. He shouldn’t pay any heed. But it was enough to plant seeds of doubt, and since he’d always had more than a healthy helping of self-doubt anyway, the seeds fell in fertile ground and grew rampant like weeds.
