River's 'static in her head' (OiS)

Last time I had too much free time on my hands I went decoding River's letters from "Safe." :) Today, I figured I give River's "static in her head" (as the shooting script calls it) a whirl. The nearly inaudible, muffled voices at the start of "Objects in Space," that is. Now, I am by no stretch of the imagination an audio expert, so everything hereafter is tentative. But after countless hours fiddling around with all manner of band filters, I was able to isolate three distinct sound sections:

WASH: It's okay, honey.
ZOE: I don't think about it.

KAYLEE: In some distance I meant to say I was pretty shake up, before.

EARLY: Aren't you listening? [...]
RIVER: We should do something that I would.

The Wash and Zoe convo is interesting. I'm guessing Wash perhaps brought up the matter of having a baby again? We know they were having an intimate moment (the one River feels). So, it would have been be an entirely appropriate time to discuss such matters.

Now, Kaylee's comment I found to be most pertinent. It refers, IMHO, directly back to situation at the end of War Stories, where Kaylee appears clearly in overload about River having shot three folks, just doing the math, and treating it pretty much like a game. Kaylee could, emotionally, clearly not cope with that: in the sense of pretending nothing happened. Comparable tone and intonation of Kaylee's voice, to that of her convo with Simon on the couch, suggest she was saying this to Simon, likely minutes before River walked in on them. I find this therefore so relevant, because, until now, I always held the belief that Kaylee gave River a cold "Stay away from my man!" kinda look. But now I'm thinking that what River saw was simply said "distance". That also fits in very well with the end of OiS, where Kaylee and River are, once again, close. I always thought that was just a spill-over from War Stories, but as a theme, coming full-circle, within the same episode, it would actually be rather poetic, and adds to the episode's overall symmetry.

Now, EARLY's voice is stretched, and really nearly indistuinguishable. Close to gone, really. I had a hard time with that one. River's line I'm pretty sure of--though it's a mite on the cryptic side. It would make for a plausible twist to include the idea that River was becoming aware of Early. It would, again, be entirely logic for Early, knowing River is psychic, to have wondered, in his gleanable mind, whether River could sense him coming. And then... River wakes up.

great post - and a convincing case:)

another possible reading that strike me is if River is a pre-cog (there are hints that she is) and that Early is a reader (there are hints that he is).

in which case kaylee 'shaken up' might mean AFTER Early..

but more importantly - "WE should do something that I would do" shows the link and seperation between Early and River. They have similarities after all - but significantly responses.

at the risk of sounding twisted - i was just watching Shindig - and the River 'static' is genuinely disturbing "they're hands are evrywhere - reaching - sometimes - then they come."
gaaaaaah!
cut to the card playing crew talking about being 'screwed over' cut to zoe and wash making like the monkey.
leaves a nasty taste about river in the academy...* and points up the healing power of zoe/wash's relationshhip in one eerie moment.

* and the potential darkside to Inara's trade.
