i have a couple of questions about this episode.

1. who was the guy with the towel over his head? was it the creator of smile time who ended up being controlled by the puppets? he is by the nest egg when angel gets turned into a puppet but he is gone when wes and fred go to destroy it.

2. less of a question and more of an observation, but did anyone realize that smile time airs live? obviously, the puppets would be unable to do their "life sucking" on a taped show. just thought that was interesting.

3. does anyone think that knox's reply to fred after she turns down his valentine's day card is when he chooses her as the vessel for illyria? she gives the card back to him and says "you have work to do." and then he gets (and i may be imagining this) a slightly stricken look and says "i do." and backs away.

incidentally, you have to love the exchange between wes and fred in his office when she tries to ask him out and he orders a car for her. i LOVE that little wink he gives her while he is requesting the ride.

Not sure who the guy with the towel was, but the creator of Smile Time, was played by the "Mustard Out" guy, who is also writer/producer David Fury.

Unrelated to your questions, but related to Smile Time, I was reading the Feb issue of Dreamwatch, and the back cover had an interesting ad. Diamond Select Toys is releasing the Angel Puppet in March of this year.

I have to have one, it will match the minature sword the Angel Puppet uses, that my friend built for that episode.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.

EMBERS

this is one of my all time favorite episodes!
Ben Edlund is a genius! Altho, of course, the idea for the show was Joss'...

1. David Fury (who was also the mustard man on Buffy's OMWF musical) played the puppeteer who had been taken over by the evil puppet demons...
since he was pretty much an empty shell (making room for the evil puppet guys arm they must have removed his spine; in more ways than one) so it wasn't necessary for Angel to defeat him.

eta:
sorry MacBaker, we posted at the same time...
and the guy with the towel was also David Fury,
he is on the DVD commentary

2. yeah, you're right...it had to be a live show for the mind/soul sucking to work

3. I'm not sure, I think Knox may have decided on her even earlier than that...because he wanted Illyria to take over someone 'worthy', someone he admired and loved (of course being dumped by Fred may have sealed the deal, but I had thought that just wanting to date Fred might have been enough).
And yes, it was funny about Wesley. He had gotten so use to being ignored by Fred that it never occured to him that she was coming to admire and care for him.

I love Ats S5!

that particular episode has so many genuinely funny moments. the power walk with puppet angel and his sword, angel getting all excited that it was smile time!, getting almost eaten by nina, fred saying, "angel you're..... cute! with the little hands and the hair..." and of course, spike's reaction, "you're a bloody puppet!" and "you heard the puppet" or lorne about the marshmallows, "oo, those are good.". it was one of the most enjoyable episodes in terms of sheer silliness during the entire run of the show.

Did anyone else think the puppet Angel looked more like Nick Brendon than David Boreanaz? Really good ep, though.

Slightly OT about the toys: Puppet Angel has already pre-sold out (yeah, it's not even available yet and it's already *pre*-sold out) at the popular sites WizardUniverse and Time & Space Toys, but if you hunt around you can still place one on pre-order. I loved that ep, but the puppet itself doesn't look as good as it could. Here's the one and only good shot I've found of the product in the packaging, and it's kinda corny-looking:

But I did pre-order a *really* cool-looking Wesley from my fave Season 4 episode "Apocalypse, Nowish," aka "Rain of Fire." Check him out:

No sure why you think that. From the pics, it looks to me to be an accurate copy of the original puppet. Like anything, it always looks better on TV. I have a few real props from other shows, and they never look as good in person as they did on TV. TV is very forgiving of details.

I'd given some thought to movin' off the edge -- not an ideal location -- thinkin' a place in the middle.
