Hello all! We've talked about our past D and D memories, so now I'm asking for a bit more. As I'm running my current game, I find mood music is good for my bunch. BUT, I'm running out of my own stuff.

What kinds of music - genres, groups, individuals, soundtracks, etc - did you, or do you, use to accompany your heros/villains along their journeys? One thing for adventure, something different for romance?

If you would, pick your brains (if you need to, keep a strainer handy!) and see what you can come up with. Any help is much welcomed, and it's a fun chance to get another glimpse of your RPG past(s).

Thanks so much!

Film soundtracks work well. Sometimes they enhance the experience. It all depends on the mood of the group I guess. Here are some I tried, with good results:

1492 Conquest of Paradise-Vangelis
great for adventure

Film Music-Mark Isham
Collects music from 3 of his movies. While the first 2 aren't fit for D&D, Never Cry Wolf is great for subtle dungeon exploring.

Legend-Tangerine Dream
This just screams D&D. Good for eerie happenings, and possibly romance

Conan the Barbarian-Basil Poledouris
Adventure/battle/reflective

Power Classics-RCA
Collection of classic composers most powerful works. Verdi, Holst,Strauss, Beethoven. recommended for epic adventures/battles

When I run games, I like to use soundtracks from video games. Stuff taken directly from the later Final Fantasies tends to work well (especially for battles, because it tends to be familiar), but I've also run across remixed version of the classics from Zelda and Castlevania. Legend of Dragoon, Skies of Arcadia, Star Ocean, all good games to take from; also Resident Evil or Silent Hill for a really scary mood, or (some) Megaman music if it's a modern setting.

'Course these days I don't get the chance to game half as much as I wanna...

OPPYH and BlueBomber, my thanks - these will go a long way in 'setting the mood' for my gamers!

Should you think of any more, please feel free to keep 'em coming!

BlueBomber, I'm sorry you don't get to game as much as you'd like. I know the feeling, since the times we actually play get more and more sporadic. (You know, like jobs and someone's nursing career matters, or something! ) Until the next time you do, I wish you many adventures and epic sagas in your daydreams and night dreams, too!

In addition to ideas others have posted, I'd recommend looking into Midnight Syndicate ( http://midnightsyndicate.com/). They make music specifically for gaming.

I also use "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" (Alan Parson's Project), which is Poe's poetry put to music, "The Planets", "Water Music", and movie soundtracks such as "Pirates of the Carribean".

Rabit - thanks for the link - I checked them out, and I'm impressed! Had no idea there was something out there specifically for gaming. Very cool.

BlueBomber - you're welcome, and thanks in return! I saw that you're thinking of going into the military ~ if you'd like, I'll send a prayer up for you for guidance. My best wishes on your decision, and whatever else your future holds.

BlueBomber - a question: Since I've never gotten into the video games much, which Final Fantasy sdtracks do you suggest? I'm realizing there are quite a few different ones out there, and frankly, I'd just get confused.

I'm anxious to try everyone's suggestions, especially so I'll have all kinds of things to pull from. Right now I still need background for a royal tournament, maybe a little romance, and for those hush-hush (or sometimes not so hush-hush) political and conspiracy dialogues that tend to happen behind closed doors or in the shadows of a back ally.

Thanks again for the help, all!

Just about anything from FF7, FF8, or FF X should serve your purposes. There's enough variety in all those games, especially 7, to give you romance, action, and intrigue.

Too bad you never got into video games. I'm addicted, myself.

Holy Cow, I have the 4 disc Final Fantasy 7 soundtrack, and it never even occured to me. The last time I listened to it was about 5 years ago. The music is great. Think I'll give it a try. Great suggestion. Thanks!

Lovely - thank you! That narrows it down a bit (and OPPYH got some use out of it, too!)

As for the video games, my brother keeps telling me the same thing. He and his buddies have the ultimate setup - 4, 20" flatscreens all in a row, plus a TV on the side so they can have a movie/Firefly/episodes of SG-1 and SG Atlantis/ Kevin Smith movies, etc, etc going at the same time. Needless to say, we rarely know they're alive on the weekends!

I hear the FF online, as well as War of Warcraft, can become quite addicting. I think I'm mostly afraid I would never leave the TV/computer screen! I am most definitely a junkie for anything that gets me out of this world for a spell. Some days I would rather battle a dragon or a mess of zombies than have to deal with people at work . . . So, video games, huh . . . ?!!!

Actually I've never played Final Fantasy online, Warcraft, Everquest, or anything like that. Truth to say, I don't think I'd like it, not while having to pay for it. I'm more for actual roleplaying and less for hack-n-slash (though it is, on occasion, HI-larious). And, and I've lost more than a few players to online gaming. Makes me mad just thinking about it...Grr! Arrgh!

VARDEN

I'm looking at my CD-Rs I collected from our recent 4 1/2 year campaign...

Wedding:
"Canon in D" played on a Japanese koto
"Hasten to the Wedding" by the Corrs

Funeral:
"Elysium" Gladiator soundtrack

Fight with Demons:
Various songs in the gore grind or grind core genre - no titles on my CD-Rs, just ugly, ugly music

Trip up creepy river to an old Angkor Wat-sytle temple:
"Beam" and "Coral Atoll" from Thin Red Line soundtrack
I found some Mongolian throat singing on Napster back in the day - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throat_singing
"Leavened Heart" by Janah

Celtic stuff:
"Reel 'Round the Sun" Riverdance soundtrack
Medley starting with "Canongate Twitch" by Battlefield Band"

Other
"Sunny Side of the Street-" acoustic version, The Pogues

"Planet Drum Udu Chant" Mickey Hart

We had a bard who played the sitar, Morcheeba has a cool sitar song, I think it was "Baby Sitar?" Also a guy named Ashwin Batish had some stuff.

For Serenity RPG games, I listen to 'Folk Alley' on wksu.org

May have been on the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.
