RAGINGRIVER

I recently bought Season 2 of Angel and noticed something: it is in widescreen...which I prefer entirely.

However, my Season 1 set was in full screen and both sets (Seasons 1 AND 2) list on the back that they are in full frame.

Can anyone help? Did I pick up the wrong copy of S. 1 or did they just change the format for S. 2-5?

ANGEL04

I never noticed a difference, But I wasn't really paying attention. But I do know that there aren't any other versions besides the one.

STORYMARK

Angel started shooting in widescreen with season 2, though I don't think it was broadcast in WS untill season 3 or 4. Whoever put together the packaging probably just didn't realize, since season 1, as well as the entire run of Buffy (musical ep aside)were in full frame.

A lot of shows are shot in WS, though broadcast in full frame. To my reccollection, Babylon 5 was the first American show to shoot WS from the beginning, though it was broadcast in FF, in anticipation of TV's going to WS in the future (Good call, especially since DVD hadn't been invented when the series started.)

Off the top of my head, other shows that did/do this would include Alias, 24, the latter seasons of The X_Files, and of course, Firefly.

"Well, my days of not taking you seriously are certainly coming to a middle."

GROOSALUGG

The thing is, though S2 was shot in widescreen and presented on the DVD in that format, it was framed for fullscreen, which leads to a couple of funny moments early on.

In the teaser of the very first episode, "Judgement," there's a shot of the gang walking through a gym. It starts out showing a mirror, with just Wes, Cordy, and Gunn visible, then cuts to the actual characters, and you see Angel leading the group (since he's a vampire, he didn't show up in the mirror, obviously). Just before the camera turns away from the mirror, look to the far right of the screen, and check for David standing near a pillar, waiting to join the shot.

In one of the flashbacks in "Are You Now...?", a black family is turned away from the hotel. You hear the father saying "Yeah. Sign's wrong. Sure it is." Listen, and watch his face carefully, and see if you notice anything 'off' about the whole thing.
